To ask why I’m not loosing weight with all the excercise I’m doing?!

Endorphins · 22/05/2020 10:08

So I excercise 6 days per week and eat healthy 5 days per week!

I do 3 days of weight and strength training
2 days of running, generally about 7k each time
1 day of yoga for 60 minutes

I track via MFP and generally have about between 1300 and 1500 cals per day

On the weekend I relax the cal counting but don’t binge

I am still breast feeding my 2 year old and she feeds multiple times per day and throughout the night

I weigh 9 and a half stone

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace you look amazing, I'm nearly 40 and if I can look like you in another decade then I'll be delighted - your shoulders are seriously envy inducing (nothing wrong with your face either btw).

I feel a bit like you in that I feel I am fighting against this thing that once you hit 40 and have kids then you are automatically going to be fat. People with 5 year olds going on about their 'baby weight', like it's just the way it is to gain weight when you have a baby and never lose it. I've come back twice, fitter and stronger after having a baby and I'm working on it now for the third time. It's hard but it is worth it to me.

Aprilbaby2020 · 22/05/2020 21:32

I would take a guess that you’re not losing weight as you don’t really need to. At that weight and doing weight training you will probably stay around the same if not slightly less over a long period of time because your body is just building muscle at the same time as losing fat. At that weight I’d suggest measuring yourself or taking progress pictures as the scales aren’t the full picture of the progress you’re making. You may not drop down much on the scales but you’ll definitely be leaner for all the exercise and I’m sure you’ll be toning up

Lobsterquadrille2 · 22/05/2020 21:38

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace I agree that you look amazing and I've seen your "before" photograph on other threads too. I feel reassured and inspired that we're a similar age. I have been 8 stone 10 for years, until last year when I simply started eating more. It would be easy to blame my age/menopause (I have zero symptoms though) but it was the age old calories in were higher than calories out. I'm lurking on these threads because I'm determined to shift the extra nine pounds. I'm just heavier than I am comfortable being for me.

flabbyflabbyflabguts · 22/05/2020 21:54

Instead of running steadily for 7k, could you change it to intervals/HIIT?
Some people find that steady slow running makes them fatter, running can burn muscle if you're not eating enough, or can make you crave carbs and you won't notice unless you keep a strict food diary over a couple of weeks. The carb cravings can happen around two days after the run
Other than that, I am your height and weigh around 10 stones. At 9 and a half I am ripped

flabbyflabbyflabguts · 22/05/2020 21:55

I weight train, very heavy, 3 or 4 days a week, do a HIIT workout each day, and run every other day. I also do yoga every day. The yoga is for flexibility, and just because I like it.

flabbyflabbyflabguts · 22/05/2020 21:56

Oh and I wear a size 8 to 10, and I'm quite muscular

BabyDancer · 22/05/2020 22:18

I'm 5'6 with a slightly broad and muscular frame. I did a lot of endurance sports and was always pretty comfortable around 8 st 10 to 9 st. I'm currently pregnant, so I'm no longer this weight. I plan to get back into my size 8 clothes after I've had the baby. OP obviously knows what weight looks best on her and it's perfectly fine to want to lose weight while being within the healthy BMI range. Give yourself a break though OP, if you're breastfeeding then like many have said - you may lose weight after you stop. If you're keen, I would say that the weekly takeaways aren't doing you any favours.

Sunisshining12 · 22/05/2020 22:19

Wow some people here are super fit!

Karmatime · 23/05/2020 12:14

Nothing wrong with wanting to shed a few lbs but do think about maintenance. It’s one thing getting to a lowish weight goal but another staying there. 9st is the weight I like best look-wise but I have to be sooo careful to stay at that weight. The constant vigilance isn’t worth it for me, at 9 & a half I have a lot more flexibility. I’m a bit taller than you but small framed.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 23/05/2020 17:58

I wondered this after a month of lockdown.
I stopped eating back my exercise calories and started losing a pound a week.
I realised being locked down means you move an awful lot less. Walks to kettle just dont make up for all the movement in an office.
I cycle 8 miles every day, 20 every three days.

MarvellousMonsters · 23/05/2020 17:59

What you are eating is as important as how much. If it’s starchy foods your body will be holding on to it (insulin stores excess blood sugar as body fat) Eating fewer starches (bread, pasta, rice, potato, not just things that taste sweet) and increasing your good fats will help keep your blood sugar steady and stop you feeling hungry. Food is 80% of weight control, exercise is important Gor health, but isn’t necessarily going to make you lose weight.

Sezzimay · 23/05/2020 18:14

You are doing amazing! The number on the scale isn’t the best way to judge how ‘fit’ or healthy you are. Remember muscles actually weigh more than fat and with the exercise you’re already doing you might be gaining muscle - hence not losing any more weight.

Choccylips · 23/05/2020 18:29

What is your height? your weight sounds perfect and don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat.But surely you need some fat to carry on breastfeeding.

FelicisNox · 23/05/2020 18:40
  1. you don't say how tall you are.

  2. if you are breastfeeding should you really be exercising this much as you need calories.

  3. 9.5 stone is fine unless you're under 5 foot tall (I would love to be that weight).

  4. exercise builds muscle and that weighs more than fat so you may lose inches but weigh more on the scales.

  5. 1500 calories is what you should be consuming so if you are trying to lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit and be consuming 1000 calories per day but again, you're breastfeeding.

time4anothername · 23/05/2020 18:40

Do you have a healthy low level of tryglycerides, blood glucose and high enough of necessary nutrients? Good bone density that will see your through menopause and into old age? Can you do everything you need and want physically without pain? Do you sleep well? Are you balanced emotionally? These are the sort of things that matter, not the difference between 9 and 9 and a half stone...

PhoneLock · 23/05/2020 18:49

1) you don't say how tall you are.

She did. 5'6"
3) 9.5 stone is fine unless you're under 5 foot tall (I would love to be that weight).

It isn't fine because she wants to be less.

user1497879763 · 23/05/2020 18:52

I would be astonished and devastated if I was doing what you claim and not losing weight! It should be dropping off, especially as you’re breastfeeding too and you can burn off something ridiculous like 800 calories a feed. Even if you’re changing fat to muscle you’d still be losing weight. Something is amiss.

Notimefor · 23/05/2020 19:12

Over exercising possibly - but also you get bigger before you get smaller, I always notice this, but let your body rest in between workouts so your muscles repair. I have done exercise all my life and I get better results when I let my muscles recover properly, and well done. Smile

LaurieMarlow · 23/05/2020 19:17

Something is amiss.

It’s the breastfeeding. A significant proportion of women hold on to weight while feeding and don’t lose it til afterwards.

Eckhart · 23/05/2020 19:19

but also you get bigger before you get smaller

What?

Eckhart · 23/05/2020 19:21

Something is amiss

Yes, @user1497879763, it's that OP isn't you. That'll skew your calculations a bit.

showgirl · 23/05/2020 19:24

You need to work out your bmr (google bmr calculator.) It will tell you the calories you need to maintain (not an exact science.) And then go less for a deficit. Look at your weekly calorie intake as well.

lindyloo57 · 23/05/2020 19:30

I am 5ft 2 and 9 stone a size 10/12 9.5 stone for your height sounds about right.

Nurgleturtle · 23/05/2020 19:31

try looking at your carb intake, i tried the keto diet to help me loose weight (i have no thyroid) cant shift any of my baby weight no matter what i try, and i realised that a packet of health none salted nuts have an insane amount of carbs in them, and a lot of healthy food e.g. low fat products are insanely high in sugar (which also makes you put on weight) the keto diet was successful in weight loss it was awesome actually but wasnt healthy for my thyroid :(

user1497879763 · 23/05/2020 19:44

But it’s odd that the OP doesn’t suspect the breastfeeding to be responsible if she’s had multiple children and presumably breastfed them in the past? I don’t really understand what the ‘exercise calories’ are she mentions later, but I’m guessing it’s something to do with them.
