Morning everyone I’m just looking for some advice I have this really sore and dry rash on my face under my bottom lip I have no idea what’s causing it I don’t use any creams on my face it appeared a few weeks ago it’s happened before and it just disappeared after a while and left a scar on my face but now it’s back in the same exact place and I have no idea what’s causing it. The only things that have changed are I’ve started drinking more water and I’m on my period. I have attached a picture of the rash any advice or help is greatly appreciated thank you.

I'm not a dermatologist but the location and pattern looks like Perioral Dermatitis. I have had this a couple of times. I'm managing it right now in fact. My dermatologist said it is a type of rosacea.

Stop using harsh products (I'm sure mine was brought on by using nip and fab/pixi products but I don't know for sure) including fluoride toothpaste and products like shampoo with SLS included (the stuff that causes products to foam up). I now use La Roche Posay Toleriane cleanser and Biopharma moisturiser do not use steroid cream to treat it - it'll clear up briefly and then come back with a vengeance leaving you in a vicious cycle.

I was prescribed Tabocine, an acne antibiotic for 30 days. After week two my skin looked amazing.

I hope it clears up for you soon, but to be aware that skin things take a while to clear up. Good luck, it baffled me as to how I get it but think it must be stress related.

Onebrokentoe · 21/05/2020 07:17

Rosacea? I get it and it’s sore and flakey as you mentioned. Can also be brought on by heat and hormones.

FloutMyArse · 21/05/2020 07:34

I had seborrheic dermatitis around the creases of my nose and it looked like that. The crease of the chin is often an oily bit of the face so could it be that? Whatever it is I think it’s a GP situation, or dermatology referral if they can’t help.

FerneGreene · 21/05/2020 07:38

My first thought was a funnel infection. You could try the chemist first if the gp is difficult to get through to.

A friend got a rash from eating too many tomatoes (at uni, crazy diet) - you're not eating lots of anything or more than usual?

BeenHereForAges · 21/05/2020 07:41

My son gets this. After a few visits to the GP I can confirm that noone knows what it is but it disappears pretty quick with steroid 1% cream used sparingly. I hope yours does too if you can get hold of some

alittlerespectgoesalongway · 21/05/2020 07:58

Is it stubble rash? Snogging beardy blokes does this to me. I am most likely to want to snog beardy (or other) blokes a little before my period as that's when my hormones make me most randy.

JinglingHellsBells · 21/05/2020 08:02

@tulippa I completely agree she needs to see a dr, but given the situation, I suggested Eucerin (OTC creams) and explained that the correct dose of hydrocortisone for the face is on prescription (although dermatologists usually allow 1% strength for a short time.)

I suspect she has eczema and not perioral Derm as it's not actually on her mouth- it's her chin and could well be caused by her DHs beard, either irritation and / or bacteria from it.

'Perioral' means around the lips and mouth. her rash is on her chin.

olivehater · 21/05/2020 08:03

I would try dactacourt on it. Is part steroid, part anti fungal. That often clears up a lot of random facial rashes my kids that have sensitive skin and eczema get.

81Byerley · 21/05/2020 08:28

A cold sore?

CiarCel · 21/05/2020 08:44

Doesn't help diagnose but wondering about the cause. My friend went to see the doctor recently (I'm not in the UK and the lockdown has been lifted somewhat here) as his hair was falling out. She told him that a lot of people were breaking out with eczema etc., menstrual cycles disrupted, hair falling out during the stress of the lockdown.

MizMoonshine · 21/05/2020 09:06

Looks like eczema to me, life time sufferer here. Got anything similar behind your ears or in the creases of your knees/elbows?
I break out when the weather changes, when I am dehydrated, when I change any soap/detergent/perfume etc and when I'm stressed.

See your GP. Ask for a steroid cream.

EmergencyPractitioner · 21/05/2020 09:08

Any other affected places on your face or scalp?
If so might be seborrhoeic dermatitis.

EmergencyPractitioner · 21/05/2020 09:11

See a pharmacist as you can buy mild antifungal and steroids creams over the counter.

LesLavandes · 21/05/2020 09:14

I think it looks like perioral dermatitis which will need antibiotics

TheSmallAssassin · 21/05/2020 09:19

Please go to your doctor or pharmacist. You are not wasting their time and they are still open and working to keep people healthy in all ways. I had a same day telephone call from the doctor this week and was given a prescription for the right cream and starting to feel better already. The things I was trying were making things worse - 15 minutes of a doctors time now is much better than much more time further down the line!

MindyStClaire · 21/05/2020 12:35

Looks like eczema to me but I'm not an expert - I get it all over and it has lots of different appearances.

Dermol cutaneous wash cleared it for me, but different things work for everyone. Pharmacists and GPs can vary wildly in their knowledge of skin stuff. I'd try a pharmacist first and if no improvement get a GP appointment.

Whatiswrongwithmyface · 21/05/2020 13:27

Thank you everyone for your help and advice I will definitely go to the doctor or speak to a pharmacist. It’s not in any other places just under my bottom lip. I will look in to everything that everyone has suggested and see if I can figure out what it might be.
