To be tickled by the names of these telescopes?

I came across articles on how scientists have been able to witness a baby planet emerging for the first time.

Maybe my brain has turned to mush, but I am tickled pink and chuckling to myself with the simplistic names of these telescopes - Very Large Telescope, Extremely Large Telescope, Overwhelmingly Large Telescope.

Just a little light relief. If you know of other gems like this - please share.

Overwhelmingly large telescope 😂 Sounds like a euphemism to me!

It sounds like a children's story Grin

Very Large Telescope was sad because she wasn't able to see the new planet that she had been so excited about. She decided to ask her brother, Extremely Large Telescope if he could help. They both looked and looked but still couldn't see anything. They sat in the corner crying as they were so sad.

30m Telescope was walking by and asked what was wrong. They told him but he couldn't see the planet either. Suddenly, he shouted: "I know, let's ask Overwhelmingly Large Telescope. She's really, really powerful". So they all ran to the next village where they found Overwhelmingly Large Telescope staring at the sky. The explained why they were upset and asked could she see the planet. She told them she could and that she would help them see too.

Jumping up and down with excitement, they waited impatiently. Overwhelmingly Large Telescope told them to stand on a box and look through her eyeglass. They could see the planet! It was amazing! They stared and stared until their mother called them home for tea. They invited Overwhelmingly Large Telescope to join them. They chatted about the new planet all evening and went to bed that night, tired but happy.

The End.

In the very early days of the internet email was run by a program in Unix called ELM

There was rival product called PINE which apparently stood for Pine Is Not ELM

I wonder what they'll use next? They've backed themselves into a bit of a corner really.
Massively Huge Enormously Big All Seeing Telescope? Grin

Elon Musk named one of SpaceX's rockets the BFR - Big Fucking Rocket, although in polite circles it can also stand for Big Falcon Rocket.

The space people have another anecdote that may amuse you:
The pee bags for the astronauts have vanity-sizing too:
"Then it’s time to don a triangular yellow plastic urine bag by inserting the penis into a rubber receiver built into one corner of it. There are three sizes of receivers (small, medium, large), which are always referred to in more heroic terms: extra large, immense, and unbelievable. " Dixit Michael Collins Grin

Physicists and astronomers come up with all sorts of hilarious names for things. How about BICEP? Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization
KELT - Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope
BLAST - Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimetre Telescope
Ostwald Ripening - when droplets clump together to make bigger droplets (this is why ice cream gets those lumps of icy crap in)
The Hairy Ball Theorem - a sphere covered in filaments or hairs all of the same length cannot have them all brushed flat; it is impossible
Check out quarks as well!

Didn't the vatican's telescope used to be called Lucifer?
