You're going to need a lot more technical and financial knowledge than you are likely to glean from AIBU.

Have you looked at the government and specialist self-build websites?

No, but plan to - crucially though, I know our limitations and we'll be buying from scotframe or similar, and having it put up in 6 weeks.

I'd agree with Lido but a couple of books that were useful to me to help understand the process in greater detail were:

The Pocket Guide to Building Your Own Home by David Snell, and

The Housebuilder's Bible by mark Brinkley - this includes estimated costs but these will change year on year - we decided it was worthwhile to pay for a costs estimate from Estimators Online (I think) when we had our final design

Also my husband was able to do a lot of the work himself such as clearing the land and putting in the foundations . He got a friend to help him put the roof on too .
Probably saved us about 100k all in
