Explanation coming....

It's a driving one (with diagram)
OP posts:
TheOrigBrave · 19/05/2020 10:58

I was car 1, reversing out of my parking space, swinging round in order to drive onto the road.

F = front of car
1,2 3,4,5 = order of movement

Checking front and back as much as possible.

Moving backwards, reversing light on.

At point 3, I look over shoulder and there's woman RIGHT behind me. I stop (obviously) and she GLARES at me.

Now, if I'd hit her it would have been my fault, I understand that, but I was a bit cross because surely if you see a car moving backwards with it's reverse light on, you do not walk behind it.

GabriellaMontez · 19/05/2020 10:59

Was she on the pavement?

dontdisturbmenow · 19/05/2020 11:01

If they were other cars as on your diagram, she might not have seen you until she got close.

She was looking and probably assumed you'd go straight on the road than turning where you did.

The bottom line is she didn't run behind your car and you were careful and that's why you didn't hit her, so all good.

Finfintytint · 19/05/2020 11:02

You have to treat everyone and anything as a potential hazard , especially in a car park.
Reverse in to a space, not out. Much safer.

HugeAckmansWife · 19/05/2020 11:04

Technically yes you are at fault but these situations in reality all rely on everyone taking some personal responsibility. A girl walked past my drive today, earphones. Staring down at her phone v completely oblivious to anything around her. Certainly wouldn't have been aware enough to step aside if someone was coming the other way. We all need to be aware of what's going on in our vicinity

TheOrigBrave · 19/05/2020 11:07

No pavement, it's a gravel parking area with houses on 3 sides (cars park in front of each house).

All the other cars were parked ie I was the only car moving.

From point 3 if I wanted to get onto the road (missing out point 4) I would still be reversing, and onto the road which wouldn't be advisable.

It's very hard to reverse into my spot, due to the houses, but in any case coming in or going out involves reversing in that gravel area.

Maybe a person with special needs or dementia- who knows and that is why it’s always the drivers responsibility

zingally · 19/05/2020 11:12

Honestly, I don't see the problem. You were driving, saw a person, stopped, and didn't hit them. So what if you got glared at? No one got hurt, and perhaps she was having a shitty day - who knows? Sometimes people are rude.

Do you know her? If so, you could jokingly mention it next time you see her, but if you don't know her personally/never seen it before, let it go.
I'm sure whoever she was has already forgotten it.

Chalk it up to a weird experience with a grumpy pedestrian, and get on with your day.

ivykaty44 · 19/05/2020 11:13

Not everyone has ever driven or knows what a reversing light is - a child wouldn’t and it’s not their responsibility to know, pavements need to be safe and drivers need to start taking some responsibility

Carol fhe weather lady is reported as getting knocked of her bike by a car

No she wasn’t she was knocked of by a driver, drivers always blame the fucking car
Rant over

user1495884620 · 19/05/2020 11:19

What Zingally said. You had a near miss but that's why you look around all the time. No harm done.

Do check your reverse light is working though, especially if you only have one, just in case the bulb has gone.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/05/2020 12:33

Some people are just oblivious to their surroundings. Always expect them to do something stupid.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 19/05/2020 12:37

What's the issue here? You didn't hit anyone. Nothing happened.

Also, if you can reverse out of a space, you can reverse into it. You have to reverse past the same number of cars either way. Just practice a bit.

TheOrigBrave · 19/05/2020 13:48

There's no real issue, I just felt she wasn't really justified in glaring at me.

Yes, I could reverse into my spot, but it's not as easy as reversing out, but it makes no odds which way I enter/leave my space, both involve reversing in the gravel car park.

Much ado about nothing OP.

TheOrigBrave · 19/05/2020 13:56

Yeah....well you know, I'm starved of adult female conversation and the festering over the small stuff

OP posts:
GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 19/05/2020 14:01

Nothing happened, no one was unreasonable!

TheOrigBrave · 19/05/2020 14:04

She glared at me.

OK...I'll drop it Grin

Not quite sure where that leaves blind people.

Clancey · 19/05/2020 14:05

Sounds like you could’ve surprised the glarer OP.

I was looking out of my window (house not car) one morning & saw a girl rushing down the road on her phone. When she finished the call she continued to rush along whilst staring at her phone. A car stopped at the road just in front of her & she walked right into the driver side of it Shock Then she walked round to the passenger side & got in. Unless she’d had a shocking phone call I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

WeAllHaveWings · 19/05/2020 14:08

Maybe shes just got a glarey face

Maybe she was standing there the whole time and you never saw her nearly reversed into her

Maybe you shouldnt sweat the small stuff

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 19/05/2020 14:16

She glared at me.

OK...I'll drop it Grin

To be fair I've just read chapter 6 of the Book of Revelation due to some nonsense that a religious nutter enthusiast put through my door about covid19 and the horsemen of the apocalypse! This just shows how desperate we all are for a bit of entertainment!

DontTouchTheMoustache · 19/05/2020 14:26

Yanbu that she shouldn't be gloating at you, you were not doing anything wrong so I get why you are a bit annoyed. Though she may just have resting bitch face and always looks grumpy?

ConstantlySeekingHappiness · 19/05/2020 14:40

but I was a bit cross because surely if you see a car moving backwards with it's reverse light on, you do not walk behind it

Drivers always seem to assume it’s everyone else’s fault.

You were in the wrong for reversing out of the space - you should have driven on.

You had no reason to be cross.

You also shouldn’t assume that everyone else anticipates what you’re doing or where you’re going.

DollyDoneMore · 19/05/2020 14:57

I am always astonished by the number of people here whose days are ruined by people glancing at them in a funny way.

You nearly knock someone down, they look at you in a funny way and you spend the rest of the day stressing over it? Really?

shookbelves · 19/05/2020 15:00

I'm on your side here OP - the sheer number of times people just walk right behind your manoeuvring car in car parks is ridiculous. You are already moving, they can see you are moving, but they just don't care and keep coming at you, marching along - usually with a laden trolly as a weapon.
