Bin collectors shouting c*nt and sh*t at 6:30am

We're on a street of terrace houses of mainly young families and over 65s. Our bin collection happens 6-7am on a Wednesday morning. The bin collectors do a good job and I have no problems with them talking loudly cos bin collection is never quiet anyway! But recently there's a new man, and he swears and swears at the top of his voice. This morning, he wife is a cnt apparently, and some other things are sht. It also sounded like he had a full on argument with one of the other collectors.

Aibu to ask them to stop yelling, or to mention it to the council?

I feel bad reporting someone doing a tough job, especially during the lockdown, but at the same time I feel it's really not ok to be speaking the way he does, yelling and shouting down the street. What would you do? Please help!

If I felt strongly about this, I'd probably take the centre ground and ring the council but not strongly indicate who it was. I wouldn't want the person to lose his job so I'd suggest to the council that they have a chat with the 'team' who did the bins this morning as there was a lot of shouting and swearing. They'll know who the culprit is.

OldEvilOwl · 19/05/2020 11:43

I would let it go as a one off, but if it keeps happening then report him

BeetrootRocks · 19/05/2020 11:55

I'm very sweary but I agree that shouting your wife is a cunt on the street is very unpleasant and especially while you're working.

I also wouldn't approach him myself as someone who is happy to shout that about his wife is possibly not going to react well to a woman asking him to mind his language.

begoniapot · 19/05/2020 12:14

Report it. It's not acceptable. They are public employees, you the rate payer, pay their salary

JudyCoolibar · 19/05/2020 12:25

You object to that language yet you can read MN where it would be considered quite normal!

I rather doubt that OP's children are reading MN, however.

RainbowBabyDreams · 19/05/2020 12:25

I feel you. I'd love to be able to walk through town at 3pm with my toddler without hearing people shouting the c word at each other.

JudyCoolibar · 19/05/2020 12:30

No that’s how those sort of people talk, you are being a bit precious and classist

Wow, "those sort of people"? That's the absolute epitome of being classist! IME there are people who swear like troopers through all classes of society. I'm prepared to bet Phil the Greek doesn't rein it in in private. However, people of any and every class are perfectly capable of being good mannered and considerate, particularly in public.

CHIRIBAYA · 19/05/2020 12:34

Why should anyone have to listen to his filthy language, irrespective of age or whether there are children around? I would be on the phone to the council and I feel very sorry for his wife.

derxa · 19/05/2020 12:37

You need better double glazing OP. How did you hear the conversation above the roar of the lorry?

rosiethehen · 19/05/2020 12:37

I swear like a sailor in the privacy of my own home and car, but swearing at work isn't acceptable if it comes into contact with the public.

whoopso · 19/05/2020 12:37

It's Tuesday

PhoneLock · 19/05/2020 12:40

His wife might not mind. She could be one of the potty mouthed posters on MN.

madcatladyforever · 19/05/2020 12:41

It's not on, neither is yelling at omen from building sites.
I'm pretty sure their contract prohibits this.
I'd write to the council and ask for this to be stopped but not identify the individual.
There have to be standards at work, can you imagine a doctor doing this? The same rules apply to a refuse collector.

tttigress · 19/05/2020 12:44

I would report, the council would want to know, they won't fire the person, just tell then how they should behave.

To all those saying the OP is being to sensitive, and they do this a that at work, they are either exaggerating or work in pretty poor working environments.

Most work places have changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Aggressive or excessive or sometimes any swearing could lead to a HR issue in many work places.

waggydog21 · 19/05/2020 12:45

If I called my boyfriend a cunt at work I’d be sacked. My mum’s colleague referred someone as a cunt in the office and was taken aside for a “chat”. It isn’t acceptable at work full stop and also standing on the street at an early hour screeching the word is vile anyway.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 19/05/2020 12:46

This one's nearly as good as the 'Neighbour shouting BALLSACK!' thread. It's making me want to stick my head out of the bedroom window and shout 'SHIT FUCK WANK BOLLOCKS!'

Either these threads are catching or lockdown is starting to get to me ...

midnightstar66 · 19/05/2020 12:59

Is this in a similar manual, non customer facing trade though? Do you think say a builder or labourer on a site is hauled in and disciplined every time they swear? Or someone working on the road repairs? They certainly aren't here!

WitchyMoo · 19/05/2020 13:00

I'm wondering what she did so bad that his wife warrants being a cunt

GabriellaMontez · 19/05/2020 13:05

I use those words.

But not at work or I'd be dismissed. And not at full volume in the street.

Yanbu.

PhoneLock · 19/05/2020 13:07

There was a new house being built near here on an infill plot and I overheard the foreman loudly giving one of the bricklayers a dressing down for using foul language.

I was quite impressed.

IamHyouweegobshite · 19/05/2020 13:37

If I was to swear in my place of work I would be disciplined, if I was to say f or c, I would be sacked. However I work in a school, so fair enough. I would not want to hear this outside my home, let alone be woken up by it.

20viona · 19/05/2020 13:41

This would just make me laugh

Cheeeeislifenow · 19/05/2020 13:42

I wouldn't get worked up over shit. But the fact that he is calling his wife a cunt in public makes him sound horrible and I would report him because it might be the case that he makes his colleagues un comfortable too.

Viviennemary · 19/05/2020 13:42

A binman bashing thread. Shock quick report it. Dont know why mn dont do something about it all this binman bashing. . Mine never shout but I'm a heavy sleeper. I do hear the lorry sometimes. Must ask the council to get silencers for it.

Cheeeeislifenow · 19/05/2020 13:53

I don't see how it's bashing, if I was in a shop or a cafe and I heard the same thing I would have the same opinion.
