Bin collectors shouting c*nt and sh*t at 6:30am

We're on a street of terrace houses of mainly young families and over 65s. Our bin collection happens 6-7am on a Wednesday morning. The bin collectors do a good job and I have no problems with them talking loudly cos bin collection is never quiet anyway! But recently there's a new man, and he swears and swears at the top of his voice. This morning, he wife is a cnt apparently, and some other things are sht. It also sounded like he had a full on argument with one of the other collectors.

Aibu to ask them to stop yelling, or to mention it to the council?

I feel bad reporting someone doing a tough job, especially during the lockdown, but at the same time I feel it's really not ok to be speaking the way he does, yelling and shouting down the street. What would you do? Please help!

Do this to him Grin

hen10 · 20/05/2020 07:31

biglouis Seriously? Under no circumstances approach and tackle verbally as you may get an aggressive response.
They're just people, even though they say cunt a lot. Most likely if you ask politely in a friendly way to turn down the yelling and swearing first thing in the morning, they will probably oblige?

midnightstar66 · 20/05/2020 07:48

So I don't know how you guys have two people on at the same time, let alone more than two.

Shock horror - there are 2 + bin men in other places. Peoples inability to think outside their own little bubble is quite staggering sometimes. 2nd time on this thread alone after the 'I don't know how your bin man comes at 6.30 as mine doesn't come til 8'

Justaboy · 20/05/2020 08:51

And the good lord sayeth;

Let he or she who sweareth not, cast the first complaint to ye council..

Amen..

PhoneLock · 20/05/2020 09:23

Surely they should be...

Let he or she who shouteth cnt and fck in the street not, cast the first complaint to ye council.

i.e. Practically everybody.

PhoneLock · 20/05/2020 09:23

that should be

Timekeeper1 · 20/05/2020 11:48

@understandmenow We have two wheelie bins. One for household waste, the other for recycling. They are collected on different days (ie Monday normal garbage, Friday recycling). Recycling is sorted at their council depot. Both involve wheelie bins and are simply collected by a one-man automated truck. Last I heard of garbage men actually physically emptying bins was 1970's - 1980s.

Newsflash: different councils operate different practices. There are usually four people on our bin lorries, I assume it means they can operate much more quickly.

JudyCoolibar · 20/05/2020 12:09

I think playdonut was making the point that having the rubbish collected for us is a great thing and if the odd cunt slips out, so be it. Small price to pay for such an essential service.

I already pay for this service through my council tax. I didn't know I was expected to pay even more.

Panpastels · 20/05/2020 12:19

Bin men aren't exempt from having to conduct themselves appropriately in their work. Not sure why people think they are? Just because it's stereotypically a rough and ready job usually done by men !

h3av3n · 20/05/2020 12:27

Has no one here ever worked a manual job such as in a warehouse? Shouting and swearing is completely normal in many jobs and being a bin man is clearly one of those, also it is NOT a customer service job, they're collecting the rubbish, why should they have to provide customer service to people who may or may not be able to hear? That isn't part of the job... Also what about leaving the house? You hear far far worse than this just by walking down a street! You and your children need to be able to cope with it because it's a very normal thing...

PhoneLock · 20/05/2020 13:14

So is men staring at women. Is it acceptable behaviour?

fascinated · 20/05/2020 13:43

A normal thing is it, now? People shouting swear words, including misogynist insults, in the street?

Maybe you are prepared to accept that, but I am absolutely not.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 20/05/2020 13:45

I can't see how you can be offended by language like that if you're on MN.

fascinated · 20/05/2020 13:47

It’s a different thing, posting on MN for adults to read it if they choose to, and letting rip in the public street first thing in the morning (or any time of day, really).

Celerysam · 20/05/2020 13:48

The maybe now is time for a culture shift?

Dreeple · 20/05/2020 13:55

Has no one here ever worked a manual job ...?

They want to try going out on the bins they do.

It’s a hard game, the bins.

Hardest game in the World.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 20/05/2020 15:24

fascinated .... the difference is this is workman effing and blinding in the course of emptying smelly fly blown bins. The four letter abuse expressed on many MN posts are meant. That abuse is very real.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 20/05/2020 15:24

workmen

Lockheart · 20/05/2020 15:52

I'm pretty fucking sweary but I've never decided to start effing and blinding in the street.

There's a time and a place and 6.30am on a residential street is not It.

EstherEliza · 20/05/2020 19:03

It might be where you are 🙄

Lynda07 · 20/05/2020 19:10

It certainly is not! Particularly not early in the morning, loudly and in public when children could hear and, God forbid, copy! There's absolutely no need for it.

midnightstar66 · 20/05/2020 19:19

Meh, It's normal early in the morning round here at the school gates - and ours is predominantly a 'naice' school. Your heads would explode at the one I work at.

LakieLady · 20/05/2020 20:02

@AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff, the team I work in got moved from an open plan office with the director's office partitioned off in the corner because of our swearing.

Our senior manager felt that was a better option than trying to stop us. Grin. We now share an office with the equally sweary housing support workers.

ekidmxcl · 20/05/2020 20:04

I absolutely would not complain. I would want the litter taken away and if I had to tolerate someone shouting and swearing early in the morning to achieve this, I'd suck it up. Our tip is shut and I don't want rubbish building up so I'd not piss off the collectors.
