Bin collectors shouting c*nt and sh*t at 6:30am

We're on a street of terrace houses of mainly young families and over 65s. Our bin collection happens 6-7am on a Wednesday morning. The bin collectors do a good job and I have no problems with them talking loudly cos bin collection is never quiet anyway! But recently there's a new man, and he swears and swears at the top of his voice. This morning, he wife is a cnt apparently, and some other things are sht. It also sounded like he had a full on argument with one of the other collectors.

Aibu to ask them to stop yelling, or to mention it to the council?

I feel bad reporting someone doing a tough job, especially during the lockdown, but at the same time I feel it's really not ok to be speaking the way he does, yelling and shouting down the street. What would you do? Please help!

TBH I could live with the word 'sh!t'. But yelling out that his wife a 'cvnt' just isn't ok. That's totally unnecessary and offensive. You should complain.

Sertchgi123 · 19/05/2020 07:23

It’s definitely not appropriate. Speak to the council!

HollysBush · 19/05/2020 07:23

Quick, polite phone call/ email explaining your concerns should be all it takes.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 19/05/2020 07:23

Complain to the council if it happens again - maybe not if it was a one off.
Yes, it's a tough job, but he shouldn't be shouting unnecessarily, and I'm pretty certain that "cunt" does not fall within your councils' equality and diversity policy, or their customer care standards.

Warsawa31 · 19/05/2020 07:26

That’s just rude and unnecessary as a one off maybe on the heat of the moment but to be doing it every time?? He is an arsehole and I doubt he will last long there anyway. Phone the council and tell them why should you tiptoe around someone so vulgar

derxa · 19/05/2020 07:26

I wouldn't give a stuff about this. Are you bored?

LilyE1234 · 19/05/2020 07:26

Also if he is so quick to call his wife a c**t in public whilst working, I wonder how delightful he is to live with!?

captainpantbeard · 19/05/2020 07:27

Yeah I would be unhappy at hearing someone’s wife being called a cunt. And I am usually pretty blasé about swearing.

blackcat86 · 19/05/2020 07:27

You should complain. It will take 2 minutes to email your local council or use their online contact form. It's not about 'being delicate' or them working hard or whatever. I can work hard in an ASC SW role without calling anyone a cunt. You would hope early in the morning they wouldnt be shouting and waking people up. What about poor shift workers or those with young children who have been up in the night? Being a key worker doesn't mean you get to just do whatever you want and damn everyone else. You would hope someone else in the team would have mentioned it to the manager and would welcome the public backing them up.

Veterinari · 19/05/2020 07:28

@Playdonut

Yeah cos expecting someone to do the job they're paid for without shouting and swearing is unreasonable? Is that how you behave at work? You sound charming!

Op no YANBU - no one needs to yell that their wife is cunt at 6.30am in a professional capacity. It is definitely possible to do any job without yelling and swearing

WitchyMoo · 19/05/2020 07:28

Meh ! Wouldn't bother me , the dogs barking give me the rage more .
The bin trucks have terrrible brakes round here , you here the high pitch shrill from many streets away where they move 6 ft then queue 5 seconds long shrill of brakes that is audible from space
Ours shout too but I think its to be heard over the brakes . Can they even start at 6.30? Ours come around 8am

Beautiful3 · 19/05/2020 07:30

I would wait until next bin day and film it through an open bedroom window. Then send the clip to the council.

Ohtherewearethen · 19/05/2020 07:30

@Playdonut - what on earth are you on about? Why would OP volunteer to drive all the neighbours' rubbish to the tip? What a stupid comment.
It's perfectly easy and reasonable to not yell 'cunt' at the top of your voice while at work. I'd wager that 99.9% of us manage it in fact. And it's perfectly reasonable for the boss to want to know and ask that it doesn't happen again.

pictish · 19/05/2020 07:33

Well I’m sure they/he isn’t in your vicinity for longer than a few minutes...so I’d just get on with my day.
His swearing isn’t exactly pleasant but neither is it harmful. It’s just annoying...I’m sure you can ignore it.

Packamack · 19/05/2020 07:33

Complain. These assholes never seem to have a problem finding another job.

BrokenBrit · 19/05/2020 07:33

Maybe a small chance he has Tourette’s?
Honestly I would just ignore tbh, it’s a hard job especially at the minute, far from ideal of course but not worth the upset of having someone lose his job I wouldn’t think.

AddressLabel · 19/05/2020 07:35

Our recycling lorry comes every week from 6am! Usually it’s been and gone by 7am. Bin lorry usually a bit later, but recycling lorry is definitely louder.

pictish · 19/05/2020 07:35

I think playdonut was making the point that having the rubbish collected for us is a great thing and if the odd cunt slips out, so be it. Small price to pay for such an essential service.
And I agree.

midnightstar66 · 19/05/2020 07:36

Why's everyone splitting hairs about the times. Surely it's not so hard to understand that different areas get their rubbish collected at different times. Ours can come any til from 6. Today they were later than normal at 7, it's usually 6.30 but we are at the end of a very long street so they've taken a while to work down here.

speakout · 19/05/2020 07:38

I'm with you OP.

We have a team of window cleaners who shout and swear like this. My DD sometimes works night shift ( nursing) and really doesn't want someone shouting " cunt" or "fuck" outside her bedroom window.

It is attention seekig and innapropriate and has to be said it is always men who seem to act ike this in public.

Something to do with owning space.

pictish · 19/05/2020 07:38

It wouldn’t be mumsnet it posters didn’t split hairs over irrelevant nonsense now would it?

SoleBizzz · 19/05/2020 07:40

He is definitely a Mumsnetter.

WeAllHaveWings · 19/05/2020 07:42

If it is the first time its happened I would leave it. If it happens again, yes inform the council.

ElsieMc · 19/05/2020 07:42

Sounds like you live near me op. We had this until it escalated into some kind of meltdown, screaming, swearing "I hate this f-ing village" etc. I actually went out to see who it was amongst the refuse collectors. I then did ring the Council and spoke to the manager who immediately knew who it was. He had firm words. I never heard anything after that but I suspect he was moved to a village that he found more appealing.

speakout · 19/05/2020 07:42

having the rubbish collected for us is a great thing and if the odd cunt slips out, so be it. Small price to pay for such an essential service.

No one is disputing that it is an essential service.

Wht does the word "cunt" have to "slip out". Do these men et the word cunt slip out when they go to their child's parent evening at school? Or speaking to a cashier at Tescos?
I assume they are capable of word choices.
