Dm on the phone -
People who like drama call it covid.

People who prefer to make minimal fuss and get on with things call it coronavirus.

Ie the middle classes are more likely to call it coronavirus.

She was bu of course wasnt she. Didn't know what to say

Coronavirus on its own includes a whole lot of other, less problematic viruses. I like to be clear in my day-to-day conversation, so I always refer to the virus which causes CVID-19 as "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)". It really rolls off the tongue!

Covid-19 is the designated term for the disease condition caused by SARS-CoV2 virus (formerly known as coronavirus 19)

^This
SARS-CoV2 is the name of the virus. Covid-19 is the disease it causes in humans. I generally use covid as work in the veterinary industry and there many coronoviruses that cause completely different diseases in various species of animals. Coronavirus is too general since there are dozens of them.

@DontStandSoCloseToMe ha! So the 'rona is the expression of choice for the criminal classes.. that is funny Grin

I work in the central NHS where most of us seem to call it Covid when talking to each other (a lot of the comms out to providers etc refer to Covid-19).

Public comms refer to coronavirus but there isn't just one coronavirus so I can see why medics prefer the name of the disease rather than the colloquial name, or the name of the virus (SARS-CoV-2 - catchy).

If I'm just talking to my friends I would tend to call it coronavirus or 'the virus' Grin

In my (lighthearted) experience, the middle classes are all calling it 'Covvid' instead of 'C-oh-vid'... It's very annoying to my working class ears ;)

P.S. With friends/my partner, we are generally referring to it as coronavirus or 'the rona'... In work emails I usually put Covid-19 as it's more accurate.

BlueEggsAndSpam · 19/05/2020 08:54

Coronavirus, corona, the rona, COVID, covid19, the current situation.
I’m a classless beast.

I flit between ‘rona and Covid.

Coronavirus is the family name of viruses, which are avian origin respiratory viruses. Some cold viruses are Coronaviruses.

Covid 19 stands for Coronavirus Disease 2019.

Your DM is being a bit Hyancith Bucket making out this is a class thing.

Report
Tellmetruth4 · 19/05/2020 08:56

Actually I think the full name is SARS-Coronavirus Disease 2019.

Report
nettie434 · 19/05/2020 08:58

My boss went on national tv to talk about it and called it Covvid.

That's how Michael Gove and Jenni Murray pronounce it too. I think your DM is unreasonable. I don't think there is a class element to which word people use - but as PP say there is a technical difference between them.

I prefer to call it "The Unpleasantness".
Then I put down my embroidery and lie on my fainting couch.

I call it Corona so I'm in between lol

Around here the more snooty people call it Covid. Everyone else uses coronavirus.

Report
SD1978 · 19/05/2020 09:12

I refer to it as Covid-19- health care worker. I see people who refer to it as coronavirus as non health care related. Rona gives me a bit of a giggle

Iwalkinmyclothing · 19/05/2020 09:14

I think I mostly call it coronavirus. Often c19 when typing because it's quickest. I do know the difference between the two, but I really don't think it matters in general conversation.

PenCreed · 19/05/2020 09:15

I really hate it when people call it the Rona - that's my mother's name! I don't think she knows that's a thing, but when she finds out she'll be even less impressed than she is with the people who tell her enthusiastically that their dog is called Rona.

Agree with Stickygotstuck. Covid19 is the disease. It is caused by a coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 to give it its full name. Which I use depends on the context.

Report
CeibaTree · 19/05/2020 09:30

I actually think your mother might be on to something. All the hysterical/ anti-vax/the-world-is-going-to-end posts I've seen on social media call it Covid (not Covid-19) and more measured people seem to call it Coronavirus. Not sure it is a class based issue, but maybe one of education.

AJPTaylor · 19/05/2020 09:34

I am so calling it rona from now on. Every day is a school day! And nowt funnier to a teen than their elderly parent adopting a term. As you were.

LiesHumansTellThemselves · 19/05/2020 09:41

Here we use "The Shitshow".

Report
Pukkatea · 19/05/2020 09:44

I think the majority of people started out calling it coronavirus and it stuck, before it was officially named.
I don't see why it matters unless you're in virology or medicine. Coronavirus isn't specific or technically correct but it's not like people don't understand what you mean.

Only on mumsnet is the way you refer to a global pandemic a class indicator

Report
GetUpAgain · 19/05/2020 09:45

I prefer to say coronavirus as I am not a scientist or medical person, and the people I know saying Covid or Covid 19 are also not medical but trying to sound like it. And it makes them come across as pompous. Like something who would say 'utilise' when 'use' is perfectly fine.

Report
RedRed9 · 19/05/2020 09:53

I write C19 because it’s faster.
