Dm on the phone -
People who like drama call it covid.

People who prefer to make minimal fuss and get on with things call it coronavirus.

Ie the middle classes are more likely to call it coronavirus.

She was bu of course wasnt she. Didn't know what to say

I call it "the rona".

I think your mum has a point in that different people use the different terms, but I don’t think it’s class based.

The majority of people I talk to would span middle and working class, and they all call it corona virus. The only people I hear calling it covid work in hospitals or care settings, and the only people I hear say the full covid 19 seem to be American.

AnneBullen, is your boss Gove? I noticed he was "Covviding" away in an annoying fashion.

Did you refer to it as Covid when you spoke to your mum Op? So she basically accused you of being dramatic Grin
Mothers eh?
I did initially see your title and thought you meant the Daily Mail (Dm). This is just the sort of class obsessed crap they love to write about.

So English to make everything about class.

In this house we call it "the Miley Cyrus". Around my (currently virtual) way, it's the middle classes who use Covid among which there are a some of the most extreme drama llamas I know!

I work for a government department and we've been instructed by the govt to call it Coronavirus in our communications. Not Covid or Covid-19 Confused

Outside work I call it covid because I get sick of using Coronavirus all day during work.

I meant to add, what you call it has no bearing on your class and I really hate how we have to turn everything into a class thing.

Technically speaking

This virus is SARS-CoV2
The illness it causes is COVID-19
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can be wide ranging but have similar structures and methods of action

In reality none of this makes any difference and I’m not sure it’s a class issue. In general everyone know what your talking about and the only place the terms can’t be used interchangeably is in research/scientific contexts Smile

I use both. Most experts on the news seem to call it covid 19, as there are other coronaviruses.

Bagelsandbrie · 18/05/2020 23:34

We all call it “The Corona”, like “The Plague”.

I’m sure that makes us some sort of chavtastic family according to class obsessed Mumsnet. Grin

My boss calls it covid-19 every single time, drives me mad!

I call it covid because it’s easier to say. Coronavirus is too clunky

Mnthrowaway20202 · 18/05/2020 23:36

Actually I think more educated people call it covid, and others call it “corona” (particularly in a cardi b accent)

Coronavirus is to Covid19 as HIV is to AIDS, am I right?

Correct. Many people still lump HIV and AIDS together, whereas the latter is the term for a group of illnesses that untreated HIV can lead to.

I call it "the virus". But I'm loving the Billy Ray.

Corona or the ‘rona round here.

As pp said though I thought Coronavirus referred to the virus and COVID19 to the disease? Much like HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. If that’s the case it’s not a class issue it’s a using the term in the wrong context issue.

What throws me is people talking about "the c-word"

Report
LittleLeaps · 18/05/2020 23:48

I use covid because coronavirus refers to the type of virus - the common cold is caused by a coronavirus. It doesn't really matter though because whether you call it the coronavirus or covid19 nobody is going to be confused as to what you are referring to.

Actually, showing my very lower class roots here I'm sure, I often refer to covid as 'all this shit that's going on' Grin
