What is it like?

Did you ever drink?

Would love to hear from all perspectives; people that never did, only do very occasionally, used to drink but quit.

I used to drink like an idiot and one day I realised what I was doing to myself and those around me. 3 years sober.

RaynaJaymes · 18/05/2020 16:09

I don’t like the way it makes me feel.
Maybe have one alcoholic drink a year

PutOnAHappyFace · 18/05/2020 16:10

Used to drink a lot at parties/with friends in our houses, then realised that drinking made me a massive knob, I was embarrassed. It was like a lightbulb moment.

Haven't drank since.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 18/05/2020 16:11

Not sure if I qualify. I haven’t made a conscious decision not to drink alcohol, but I drink very very rarely. The last time I had a drink was in May last year, at the pub for a friend’s birthday. 2 drinks. Prior to that was in October 2018 at a friend’s Halloween party. (More than 2 drinks!) I drink maybe once or twice a year, only socially. But I go out socially very rarely. I never drink at home. I just don’t have much of an appetite for it. I drank a lot in my teens and early twenties then friendships dwindled (I’m a lone parent) and opportunities to go out became less frequent until I got to today’s situation.

Ritascornershop · 18/05/2020 16:11

I’ve just never drunk much. I might have a glass of wine a year, sometimes two. I’ll buy a bottle of wine to make pizza sauce and a year later I’ve used it up. It’s just never been my habit, I’m not crazy about the taste, I somehow married an alcoholic (partly because drinking as habit is so out of my universe I didn’t know what was normal) so now I have even less inclination having gone through that (long divorced now).

SmolGreenCrocodileBaby · 18/05/2020 16:11

I tried it a few times as a teen. Hated the taste. Got drunk a few times, awful hangovers.

Didn't get the appeal.

Late 30s now and have never drank since about 18.

I just don't get it at all.

clumsyduck · 18/05/2020 16:13

Used to drink far to much , quit . Have the odd beer every now and then but don’t really enjoy the feeling of being drunk anymore . Crazy really considering how much I used to love it but look and feel far better for not drinking these days

KingOfDogShite · 18/05/2020 16:13

Used to drink a bottle of wine a day now I don’t drink anything. Don’t even think about it now.

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/05/2020 16:16

I can drink and drunk probably an average amount (average for that age) as a teen and an adult. I more or less stopped when on a diet and would rather chocolate calories than wine ones. Now I guess I'm just out of the habit, i will occasionally drink at things like Christmas or weddings etc but generally opt to drive in preference to drinking. I can take it or leave it. I don't like Gin which I guess is the most fashionable drink at the moment so all the posts with folk enjoying a gin don't temp me :)

We have alcohol in the house, DP and Adult teen DSs have a few ciders/beers and/or whiskies a week, nothing outrageous.

There is a history of alcoholic-ism on both sides of our family but neither DH or I are or have even been close.

Walruse · 18/05/2020 16:17

I stopped when I started to get increasingly horrendous hangovers. Even after just a few glasses of wine. Just stopped being worth it for me.

Puffinhead · 18/05/2020 16:17

Used to drink when I was younger and went out lots. Now I’d rather stay in with a cup of tea! I might have the odd glass of Pimms during the summer but would just as happily drink water tbh.

TheFairyCaravan · 18/05/2020 16:19

I don't drink at all because it gives me migraines however even before that I've never been a drinker and have never been drunk. It just doesn't appeal to me.

We do have alcohol in the house because DH and the adult kids like a beer or gin or two, but they're not big drinkers either.

OneMomentInHistory · 18/05/2020 16:19

Used to drink - fairly average I guess. Got wasted a fair bit in my 20s. Slowed down when getting healthier then when trying for a baby. Now, outside of pregnancy, I might have a glass of wine or G&T once a month. Wouldn't drink more than that more than 2-3 times a year. Just don't get anything out of it these days!

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/05/2020 16:20

Are you asking because you drink (heavily?) and looking to give up?

Biscuitbiscuits · 18/05/2020 16:20

I drink far too much. I only drink once or twice a week, but I'm a binge drinker.

I sometimes drink 2 bottles of wine, sometimes 4 beers then half a bottle of bourbon. A couple weeks ago I drank a litre of vodka without really noticing in one evening. I'm not an unhappy person at all, I just don't know when to stop.

I decided last weekend to try and quit until July. We'll see how I feel then.

Thegate · 18/05/2020 16:20

I used to drink a lot when younger going out clubbing. Never really drank just sitting in the house.
Now I don’t drink at all. Don’t like being hungover and like going out early so don’t want to waste a day not being able to drive

Etinox · 18/05/2020 16:21

Used to drink too much- developed into daytime drinking and massive MH crisis. Stopped over 10 years ago with the help of AA and never think about it or crave a drink. That was the case from about a week after my last drink- I’d spent 3 months sliding with increasing periods of not drinking in between- so 48 hours, a week, a fortnight a month between drinks.
I’ve had 2/3 accidental drinks- literally when someone passed me a drink telling me it was af but wasn’t. Each time I thought this is strange, then realised, then told a friend in recovery.
I love not drinking. Just as well because I don’t have a choice, but I love knowing I’m tired because I’m tired not drunk or high as a kite just because I’m feeling free and just silly. It’s wonderful🤩

Allergictoironing · 18/05/2020 16:21

Used to drink a fair bit when I was out, as long as I wasn't driving, and would also sometimes have a fair bit if staying at a mate's house overnight. Then again, I could go weeks without a drink if I wasn't going out much for any reason. I put this down to being introduced to alcohol at an early age as something nice now & again & a social thing, so it wasn't anything special for me when I started to go to parties & pubs.

Now I can't remember the last time I had a drink. I'm on some quite strong painkillers permanently which really don't mix well with alcohol, I tend to always drive if I go out, & don't see any point in drinking alone. I don't really miss it at all, though there's always a bottle of Irish Whiskey in the cupboard in case I fancy something.

Ah just remembered my last drink. Was in the West Country visiting relatives & staying in a B&B pub, about a year ago. Had a single glass of cider with my dinner, as it was from a local farm.

Zoflorabore · 18/05/2020 16:21

I can’t deal with 3 day hangovers

Thegate · 18/05/2020 16:21

@Puffinhead
Now I’d rather stay in with a cup of tea!
Exactly this!

Dondevastu · 18/05/2020 16:22

Never drank, hate the smell of strong alcohol, makes me heave.
Also had an alcoholic family member who put me and themselves in ridiculous amounts of danger growing up so that also put me off during my teen years.
I eat very clean and exercise a lot so it fits in perfectly with my lifestyle too.

NeutrinoWrangler · 18/05/2020 16:23

I've never had alcohol (except cooked in a few dishes).

I don't want to go into details, but I grew up spending time with someone who did drink. This person didn't get falling-down drunk or become abusive when drinking, but I just didn't like being around them when they were drinking. That was enough to make me decide I had no interest in alcohol.

Also, I know that one of my great-grandfathers was probably an alcoholic definitely behaved badly while drinking and I'm a little worried that I could have inherited a proclivity toward alcoholism. I'd just rather not tempt fate.

Aside from that, I've just never felt the need or inclination. I do well enough without it, and the money I'd spend on booze can go toward my hobbies. Wink

Puffinhead · 18/05/2020 16:23

Looking back to when I was younger, I used to drink to help me lose my inhibitions and feel more confident. Got in some right states though!

Petrarkanian · 18/05/2020 16:23

Used to drink, but now it makes my IBD worse, so it's not worth it.

RonObvious · 18/05/2020 16:24

Alcoholic parents, then lots of blackout drinking as a teen. Got my act together in my early twenties, and have now been sober for 18 years.
