Spending £400 on a fan.....

Youngatheart00 · 16/05/2020 19:57

A Dyson room fan to be precise.

Don’t sleep at all well in the summer and house really holds the heat. Have tried cheap rotor blade fans before but the noise keeps me awake.

Torn between thinking it will really improve quality of life and thinking it’s a ridiculous amount of money to spend.

Any opinions?

We can see this thread is a few years old so some of the guidance may be out of date, but we’ve recently refreshed our best tower fan guide with advice on choosing the right fan, including the pros and cons of a Dyson fan and more budget-friendly options. We hope it helps.

Not sure if QVC sells them ...but you get 30 days to try or return so worth a punt.

whichteaareyou · 16/05/2020 21:14

Dyson fans are terrible!!! Don't waste your money

whichteaareyou · 16/05/2020 21:15

And its not even silent you can still hear air coming out. It's deff not silent!

SuperheroBirds · 16/05/2020 21:17

We’ve got a Dyson hit and cool, and I love it. Admittedly I do use it more for the heating part, but that is really good.

SuperheroBirds · 16/05/2020 21:18

Hot, not hit!

EwDavid · 16/05/2020 21:19

We bought the Dyson tower fans for or clinics at work last year to try and keep the medication cool. Cost an absolute fortune and are totally, utterly useless. I would never even consider one, save your money.

DBP1234 · 16/05/2020 21:21

I’d have said no, it’s a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a fan. Until that is my husband brought one, a few summers back. It was a godsend during the heat wave when I was heavily pregnant and suffering. It’s a lot better than any of the blade fans we’ve used and wouldn’t be without it now.
I’d say if it’s not going to leave you short get one.

Geepee71 · 16/05/2020 21:22

We've got a hot and cold dyson one, love it and would replace if it broke.
Was concerned on cost initially, but wouldn't be without it now.

Longdistance · 16/05/2020 21:26

We had the Dyson fans in our office at work, they were useless. Just get a tower fan or a tall fan. Don’t waste you’re money.

TokenGinger · 16/05/2020 21:32

We have the Dyson Hot and Cold fan. We bought it last summer was DS was born because the heat in the bedroom was unbearable.

I wouldn't recommend it for cooling down a room. It's helped the past couple of weeks when we've had warmer nights but in the peak of summer, it was still stifling in the bedroom. I wished afterwards that we'd bought an air con unit.

However, the heat side of it is absolutely fantastic for winter. It heats our living room up much more quickly than the central heating.

For that reason, I don't regret buying it because it's been useful all year round. Yes an air con unit would help for the 3-4 very hot weeks we might get, but we've been able to use this for the entire year so I feel we've got our money's worth.

MerryDeath · 16/05/2020 21:33

how much is an a/c unit (no idea sorry) but we have one in our house installed by previous owner (RIP Mrs B and thanks) and it is FUCKING AMAZING. i loathe being too hot. i actually like fan noise too though I'm probably conditioned to because of how much i hate being hot at night.

Dita73 · 16/05/2020 21:37

I have one and they’re definitely NOT worth the money

selfisolationsociety · 16/05/2020 21:41

It’s noisy and not a lot of cool air unless your face is near the hole I found. I got the one they purifys air

AspergersMum · 16/05/2020 21:43

We have a NSA UK fan from Costco, best fan I've ever found. We like the quieter settings for sleeping and the remote. It is much cheaper than a Dyson and much better IMO. If air con wasn't so noisy we'd go with that tho.

Youngatheart00 · 16/05/2020 22:06

Thank you very much for the opinions - the thing I wanted to avoid was paying a whole lot for something that doesn’t really work much better than the average desk fan. I fear with the Dyson we’d do that! Will look into cost effective air conditioning units......

London nights June-Aug tend to be muggy and stagnant air so I am willing to invest, just don’t want it to be purely aesthetics at the expense of effectiveness and that is the message I’m getting about the Dyson

WineAndTiramisu · 16/05/2020 22:11

Pay slightly more and get proper air conditioning installed!

shakeituntilyoumakeit · 16/05/2020 22:13

Oh I’d buy it again in a heartbeats. I had one for the last month of pregnancy six years ago and we get it out in the summer it’s amazinf

Treeballarae · 16/05/2020 22:14

Like a PP I have a Meaco fan, the 1056 room air circulator, as my new build house gets vet hot in summer. I had previously wanted a Dyson fan but I read the bad reviews and I was worried about spending so much money. The Meaco cost me £100, so significantly cheaper. It's quiet enough on half speed to sleep with at night. But if you can afford it, I would go for an air con unit as fans can only move the air around.

Gunpowder · 16/05/2020 22:19

Bucking the trend here, we’ve got two of the little desk top Dyson ones and I think they are fantastic.

Charliebong · 16/05/2020 22:20

Have a look on the TJC shopping channel website...they have an Air pod fan which works on a similar concept to the dyson....looks very sleek and is around the £90 mark I think.

violetbunny · 16/05/2020 22:22

We have a Dyson hot and cool, I really like it. It's not completely silent but it is quieter than a standard fan. It doesn't cool like an air conditioner, it moves the air around like a normal fan. So depends what you want it for, we have air conditioning in the main living area of our house so use the Dyson in the master bedroom on warm nights.

Redwinestillfine · 16/05/2020 22:23

@RaggieDolls what make are they if you don't mind me asking?

jonnybiscuits · 16/05/2020 22:28

Honestly don't. We have a Dyson hot and cool. The hot is great but the cool is pathetic. It also makes a very annoying buzzing sound when not actually on.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 16/05/2020 22:32

We have a Dyson fan and it is rubbish. Doesn't cool, noisy and after a little while it makes a noise like a quiet buzzing even when off! First one went back and was replaced but the second one does it too :-(
DH has now got it in his office and we have bog standard £20 desk fans from Amazon which are fantastic!

alittlerespectgoesalongway · 16/05/2020 22:37

*Sorry no advice but watching with interest.

We're in the middle of a loft conversion and all anyone tells me is how hot loft rooms get in summer*

Completely wandering away from the thread but we had a loft conversion done 5 years ago. The insulation they were proposing was pitiful and my OH significantly beefed up the spec. The room is now NOT overhot in summer and neither is it more cold then the rest of the house in winter. I'd focus on that more than a fan.
