Dog walkers

Lockdowner13 · 16/05/2020 09:42

I’ve noticed that since the places we can visit are restricted at the moment due to virus, just how many dog walkers there are.

I’m finding it impossible to take kids out without seeing dog off it’s lead. I really don’t like dogs much.

I’m finding that dog owners round here are selfish. Taking up the whole of the path so I need to run in the road, off lead when kids are walking, taking over the local green space.

AIBU to think that during lockdown some better rules should have been implemented. Eg dog free hours for exercise. We usually go to dog free places for our fun. Eg kids parks, cafes, national trust. Now I’m being forced to mix with dogs and it’s annoying me.

The government have said that we are to socially distance. Having people come and fetch dogs from near me is not social distancing. Go look it up yourself... it’s called google. Mumsnet is full of strange people today...

I won’t ever need to “fetch my dogs away” from you. They are not remotely interested in you (or Tarquin). Have you found a link telling me to keep my dogs on a lead yet?

MissEliza · 16/05/2020 22:00

I keep my dogs under control, you keep your kids under control. Exactly.

Iwantacookie · 16/05/2020 22:00

Yanbu op. I get nervous around dogs and I dont particularly like dogs off the lead at any time.
I think there should be designated areas.
However I accept that it totally my issue and I am happy to ignore any dog who ignores me.

She who smelt it dealt it.

Lockdowner13 · 16/05/2020 22:02

It really comes down to common sense...

Quick. Get her some....

CherryPavlova · 16/05/2020 22:03

I can’t remember the last time our dog was put on a lead. He actively avoids people and children in particular. I quite like well behaved children.

burritofan · 16/05/2020 22:05

YANBU. Dogs are terrible. And should be on leads in parks at the moment and always if I ruled the world, but never bloody are; and shouldn't be allowed to shit everywhere (I don't really care if you pick up Rover's poo, there are still smears) but do; and shouldn't be in the dog-free section of my local park but always bloody are, it's like whack-a-mole telling dog walkers this bit isn't for them, only for another one to pop up and start yapping.

Alymcnabs · 16/05/2020 22:08

No... i DO have problem that pick on children though. A parenting forum is an odd place for people that don’t like children to hang out. I certainly contributed to mumsnet prior to becoming a parent. Particularly on the fertility boards. But I would never take the piss out of a child or compare a child’s behaviour to an animal. Seems odd behaviour

We are not on fertility board. We are on a thread you created, whinging about dogs, who are walked on their normal route that you recently found because your usual walk is closed - remember?

If you (and Tarquin) don’t like dogs don’t walk on an established dog walking route. Simple??

Any link to dog owners having to keep dogs leashed yet?

twinkle2306 · 16/05/2020 22:08

@Lockdowner13 We strongly advise dogs on leads

Advise NOT they have to be. Major difference. Look it up on google

Lockdowner13 · 16/05/2020 22:11

They strongly advised me not to go sit on beach today... so I didn’t, because I’m sensible and don’t want to spread cv

OP posts:
twinkle2306 · 16/05/2020 22:14

@Lockdowner13 but you could've done. You said it was against the rules which it is not! Then you have the cheek to tell people to google things. When you couldn't even see the difference between advice and rules.

Also most people don't have access to the parks that you have mentioned. So not really relevant to us mere mortals who don't have access to royal parks.

Goodness sake stop being so silly!
You can be scared of dogs and still share a space. I'm scared of spiders but I won't refuse to go outside because there may be wild spiders off their leads.

Getoutofbed25 · 16/05/2020 22:15

Listen to yourselves, this thread is disgusting, people saying how much they dislike children, getting into some competition about who uses spaces most often, good weather, bad weather, dogs behaviour, children's behaviour. The bottom line is we are a society, communities, we need to be tolerant of differences. Children should be respectful, dogs should under control, there will bd exceptions to both but we need be tolerant and kind, this thread is upsetting for humanity. I have encountered many children with less than desirable behaviour but who knows what’s going on for that child, I’ve encountered out of control dogs, Id rather not be approached by a dog I don’t know but it doesn’t mean every dog will approach me. Where is tolerance. Unbelievable some comments

Your point is?

CaptainCabinets · 16/05/2020 22:19

@twinkle2306 wild spiders made me GrinSmile

Lockdowner13 · 16/05/2020 22:19

My point is in coronavirus times, we need to take this “strong advice” and use our common sense. Dogs on leads seems sensible to me. Just like I don’t take my kids to the store when I shop. I have been working at home, just cos I can. Etc etc. It’s just Common sense.

OP posts:
m0therofdragons · 16/05/2020 22:21

Op, have you not gone for walks previously? I’m pretty sure the dogs haven’t just appeared over night. Don’t get me wrong, irresponsible dog owners annoy me, but so do bad parents.

Lockdowner13 · 16/05/2020 22:21

We have poisonous spiders in the the uk that kill people? Or bite them causing facial injuries? What does spider poo look like?

OP posts:
Coastercat · 16/05/2020 22:22

If you want a dog, make sure you have a garden big enough to exercise it in.

Dog owners need to be a bit more sensible:

If your dog is out in public it should only be off a lead if it is capable of coming to you as soon as you call it.

Bag the poo AND BIN IT. (I was on a walk today. The only dog poo I saw was in bags, but bags of dog poo had been chucked EVERYWHERE. Why bag it and leave it??? I’d rather just see the poo. At least that biodegrades quickly).
If your dog is off the lead, keep it in sight at all times.

You shouldn’t let your dog approach other people.
Remember at all times that your dog is your lifestyle choice. No member of the public should have their enjoyment of a public place ruined by your lifestyle choice.

And you can’t compare dogs to children. We need children as a society. Most grow up to be valuable members of society - hopefully they will find cures to cancer, solve climate change, pay taxes to keep the country running, work in care homes etc. Dogs provide a lot of comfort and enjoyment to their owners, but it can’t be said that they are of the same use to wider society.

Lockdowner13 · 16/05/2020 22:22

It’s because we are all funnelled into a few local areas. Everywhere else is shut. Those places appear busier

I think spider poo looks like twinkle2306.

MissEliza · 16/05/2020 22:25

I do agree with you Op about keeping dogs on leads these days. A few weeks ago, this huge dog came up to mine and wouldn't leave her alone. It kept following us and my dog was actually getting scared. The owner was too busy chatting to some other people. When he eventually came to pull his dog off mine, he got so close to me, I'd have been annoyed under normal circumstances never mind these days. I bit my tongue though because I certainly don't want any arguments these days. You don't know how people will react.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 16/05/2020 22:26

Oh dear, the usual whataboutery whenever people get defensive.

Firstly, I'm a huge dog lover and have adopted 4 over the years. BUT...I have to admit there are a massive number of really flaky dog owners out there who have no idea how to train or control their pets, and what's worse, they don't appear to care that much. The amount of hassle I've had from dogs when hiking is ridiculous. I've had dogs run up to me barking, have been jumped up at (dirtying my clothes). Often no apologies from the owners, and I've heard so many excuses I'm fed up of it; "Oh, he doesn't like your walking poles", "it was because you were looking down so he couldn't see your eyes", "it must be because you're wearing bright colours", "he doesn't like your rucksack", "he doesn't like your hat", "it was because you stopped walking/didn't stop walking", etc. I wonder how many of these owners then thought they ought to do some extra training with their dogs so they weren't triggered by poles/hats/bags, etc, or would continue to make excuses every time?

As a previous dog owner I must say many owners really let the team down and add fuel to the anti-dog fire, which pisses me off. Train your animals, and if you don't know how, get some professional help from organisations such as apdt.co.uk/

Witchgonebad · 16/05/2020 22:27

My dog is walked off lead. When we see someone approaching he is called back to me. Do we get a thank you from parents like you for interrupting our walks? Not often.

YABVVU We all share this world, learn some tolerance.

DrinkVeneer · 16/05/2020 22:28

@Lockdowner13 exactly. Normally I'd be in a gym or a theatre or a restaurant or whatever instead of walking around a fucking park when I'm not at work. We're all living differently now. We're all living massively differently. Everyone is adapting their behaviour. Dog owners need to do so too.
