Do delivery guys get annoyed delivering non essentials.

Just wondering ^^

Have got a fair bit delivered since lockdown. Mainly amazon but some others. Obviously they don’t know what’s inside the parcels most of the time but some of have writing on the side. Some things have been delivered without packaging.

Had three birthdays to buy for so ordering gifts.

Needed to order other half some work clothes.

Ordering bits we need from amazon.

Ordering cleaning supplies as not much left in the shops.

Also ordered birthday cards etc.

Do delivery guys get annoyed with the amount of people getting things delivered or are they happy to do so?

Worried they hate me 🤣 had two from Amazon this week, two from Hermes and two from Royal Mail 🤨 they are probably starting to recognise me! 🙈

Can't speak for all of them, but the guy who brought my compost was pleased to be working as normal. We had a (socially distanced) chat about cabin fever, and how I am glad I still get to go into the workplace once weekly. He agreed, and said that he'd had to have a fortnight off self-isolating, but was much happier now he was back. Which relieved my conscience sufficiently for me to buy a few other non-essentials.

smokescreen · 15/05/2020 13:28

I don't even care

WallyDancre · 15/05/2020 13:28

It keeps them in a job. People like to complain, but that doesn't mean they would prefer not to have the work.

midnightstar66 · 15/05/2020 13:32

I had a good old chat with the amazon delivery guy the other day. He told me how he's a single dad and his kids were with his mum so he can continue to work as he's self employed, he's grateful for the work - obviously can't speak for everyone. Postman was jolly this morning too.

NelliePig · 15/05/2020 13:34

Not sure about the delivery men, but I can tell you for sure the postmen ladies are pissed off! They have to have days where they dont deliver letters just to get through the parcels! Lol.

ApricotCrush · 15/05/2020 13:40

I've bought loads since lockdown. It keeps the economy going and keeps the couriers in a job. I'm also selling on eBay. Their job is easier now as they drop off and pick up without waiting for people to open the door.

MsAwesomeDragon · 15/05/2020 13:41

I've had loads of non essentials delivered. Mostly birthday presents and craft things to keep me dd occupied while we're not allowed out.

The royal mail parcel delivery man likes coming to my house because he used to live here (he's told me that about 5 times now, we always have a chat about it 😁). The other delivery drivers always seem very happy, smily and chatty. They don't seem very put out at delivering parcels.

smokescreen · 15/05/2020 13:42

@ApricotCrush

Not to mention less traffic

mindutopia · 15/05/2020 13:42

We always have lots of deliveries coming and going (dh runs a business, so always stock coming in and out, plus all the usual things we need to order). Couriers have been saying they are busy, but grateful for the work. Like dh, if they don't work, they don't make money. Making deliveries is certainly safer than a lot of other work that's carried on - like builders, supermarket workers, etc.

MrKlaw · 15/05/2020 13:50

"Our Hermes driver is plastering all over facebook, moaning about how people are putting him at risk by ordering non-essentials. It's shitty of him imo."

Surely he manages social distancing even before lockdown by throwing the parcel over your gate from at least 2m away

Lynda07 · 15/05/2020 13:54

No they don't, orders keep them in work and many are just glad to have a job at this time. It makes no difference to the courier whether they are delivering one package or three at a time (unless something big and heavy but they have a hoist/trolley thing for those types of goods). They will usually leave in a 'safe place' for us to pick up later but when I've seen couriers in the drive, they've seemed mightily cheerful.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 15/05/2020 13:54

Errmmm - it's their job to deliver whatever people order.

Maybelatte · 15/05/2020 13:55

Doubt it, it’s keeping them in work so compared to many others they’re actually in a fortunate position right now.

HollowTalk · 15/05/2020 13:57

Royal Mail staff are different, though, as they'd still get paid, but delivery staff aren't employed in the same way and would lose their income if they didn't deliver.

TooDamnSarky · 15/05/2020 13:58

Ease your guilt by moving away from amazon and support smaller businesses. There is a great thread in the ethical living board with lots of fab links.

......
The courier is more than shitty posting bile on facebook. Why does he/she do that and what good does it do? At least he's earning.

My courier deliveries have always been placed exactly where I want them, I'd complain if they were thrown at my front door or garden because there's no excuse for that - and I'm not someone who likes complaining about my fellow man/woman.

It hasn't happened except once, years ago, and I saw a courier with a big van outside my house throwing everything on the pavement with a big crash, trying to find my item which also went onto the pavement and broke. That was nothing to do with lockdown, it was just shoddy behaviour from someone who took no pride in his job and I did complain about it; I think that was the only time I ever moaned about a delivery.

LGY1 · 15/05/2020 13:59

My husband works for Hermes (not as a delivery driver) and he has said a few things:

They are busier than Black Friday / peak Christmas

The amount of huge boxes of rattan furniture going through the hubs is a running joke

The first time delivery rate for the drivers is through the roof - meaning the drivers are getting better paid as they don’t have to visit the same house 3 times

thatcarolebaskinbitch · 15/05/2020 14:02

I feel a bit bad as DPD Dave is visiting my house about 3 times a week atm, I wouldn't feel as guilty if it wasn't the same guy every time! Im sure when he delivers my 3rd ASOS parcel for the week he wonders why I didn't just order it all in one go Grin

Oldraver · 15/05/2020 14:04

There is always a 'what are we having delivered today' convo first thing in our house

mummyh2016 · 15/05/2020 14:06

Most couriers are self employed so I do feel guilty. It's not as though they can be furloughed if they have no work!

R1R2 · 15/05/2020 14:07

Think Amazon have been 4 times this week Blush but the driver is good as gold and always seems happy enough.

cologne4711 · 15/05/2020 14:07

Are they? How do they know what parcels are "essential" and not-essential - and what are their criteria for deciding what is "essential" and isn't? And why are letters deemed to be essential but parcels not?

My postman definitely isn't coming round every day but I assumed that was because they are short-staffed and doing more than one round, not because they are delivering so many parcels.

Looking forward to hearing what criteria Royal Mail is using for "essential" (obvs not wine, but they don't deliver mine).

Tachograph · 15/05/2020 14:07

I don't know if they hate you but I hate them. I live in a rural area with lots of country lanes that should be quiet and safe for walking/cycling.

Maybe you should walk on a footpath instead of the road.

cologne4711 · 15/05/2020 14:08

Well they're not having to ask for a signature anymore are they? It is much easier to leave a parcel on the doorstep and go.

midnightstar66 · 15/05/2020 14:09

I bet they are flying too as the roads are so quiet
