I’ve seen that a quarter of deaths have been people with diabetes No specification of type 1 or 2. I wasn’t worried before but starting to worry now. Is anyone else? Do you think shielding will come in for those with type 1? What are your thoughts?

Its mainly Type 2 Diabetes. Can't remember where i read it about. I don't think you will get a letter to shield as according to the NHS as you are not classed as extremely vulnerable. I think its more to do with weight and high blood sugar that causes problems which is more Type 2

This is what I’m hoping. Fingers crossed she won’t need to shield just as others are starting to go back to school etc.

Interested as DH is type one and we’d love to know more. We’re being a bit more cautious but not excessively so. I would imagine that the figures for diabetics and Covid are very likely skewed by Type 2, as it is so strongly associated with age, obesity etc in this country. Also BAME people are more at risk of dying from Covid, and they have a higher incidence of Type 2, even when controlling for other factors.

The first 10 - 15 mins of his radio show talk about Type One and Covid, what they know and what they’re trying to find out. There’s possibly an issue with ketones being produced at a lower blood sugar than usual but they’re not sure. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000htx2
