Boris has said his being overweight contributed to his problems with Covid-19.
Stories this morning suggest he will wage war on fat...

What type of help do you think might be suggested?

Have you decided to lose weight due to Covid-19 worries?

YABU - no I will not lose weight due to Covid worries

Spot on, ToffeeYoghurt!

At the moment, it's very fashionable to prescribe mirtazapine for chronic insomnia. It's no. 1 side effect: weight gain, lots usually.

Like many anti-depressants, mirtazapine is an appetite stimulant. You gain weight because you eat more

highmarkingsnowmobile · 16/05/2020 15:23

You put on weight sometimes without even eating more, Phone. I tried it. Was rabidly hungrier but as did not want to gain weight kept a strict food diary. It still made me gain weight so I stopped taking it.

highmarkingsnowmobile · 16/05/2020 15:26

Instead I just live with horrible insomnia. But I don't want to be fat.

Noextremes2017 · 16/05/2020 17:30

Is Johnson going to kick off this campaign with himself?

Most people with Coronavirus lose weight in hospital - for obvious reasons. If you are struggling to breath you don't tuck into all that calorie laden hospital food.

Johnson, on the other hand came out as fat as he went in. Very strange!

Celestine70 · 16/05/2020 17:35

Ok we all know that is unhealthy. But it's a complicated issue and a lot of people become fat due to other health problems. It's a bit victim blaming to me.

Sparklynails7 · 16/05/2020 17:48

Being overweight can lead to loads of different diseases. If heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke etc didn't persuade you to lose weight, then why should coronavirus scare you? I'm naturally slightly underweight with no health issues so I don't have this fear, but I'm intrigued why people are suddenly scared of coronavirus, but not other diseases.

PhoneLock · 16/05/2020 18:05

He weighed a stone less.

Wilmalovescake · 16/05/2020 18:11

“Johnson, on the other hand came out as fat as he went in. Very strange!”

No, he didn’t. But do carry on making it up.

I’ve lost just over a stone so far in lockdown and I want to lose the same again. Covid is definitely part of what has motivated me.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/05/2020 18:11

Imho it's the 'urgency' of it? The virus will kill you now, however diabetes and heart issues take longer.

Bluntness100 · 16/05/2020 18:12

Boris had lost enough weight in that short period of time for it to be noticeable to everyone apart from that poster.

DreamTheMoors · 16/05/2020 18:12

My trying to lose weight only has to do with fitting in my jeans. I refuse to buy a bigger size and I’m sick of wearing leggings!

DanceItOut · 16/05/2020 18:17

I’ve been trying to lose weight for nearly a year but really struggling to shift it despite being very overweight. I actually have a very healthy diet now but my problem is fitness I think because I have plantar in my feet meaning exercise hurts a lot even walking. I do still try because I’m hoping losing weight will help with the plantar issue but being stuck home in a flat is not helping.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 16/05/2020 18:19

It really doesn't matter how healthy your diet is, if you are eating too many calories you won't lose. When I lost 3 stone I did f all exercise and still lost.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/05/2020 18:32

I actually have a very healthy diet now but my problem is fitness

Go and count every single calorie you consume. I too wondered why am I not losing even though I eat healthy food😳 Needless to say my "super duper healthy" lunch salad was actually an abomination with mire calories than big mac😂 Not abomination completely tbf. It had veg, some fat (cheddar), some protein(chicken or lean ham, not the wafer whatnot and egg), some carb like couple of baby potatoes , couple of tablespoons of dressing with lots of lemon juice...... But god. The calories!
I now weight, count and actually bought measuring spoons and voila. 13/14 pounds down. I still eat awesome and healthy food, but much less of it.

I also currently have spiced courgette slices in the oven and they will hopefully become tasty crisps for movie night.

Courgette is my diet savour.😂

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/05/2020 18:34

Also. Don't forget to count that bastard oil you put in a pan 🙄 I went and bought new non stick pans now!

Mylittlepea · 16/05/2020 20:10

Haven’t read the full thread, honestly not interested in the politics/blame thing on here but I’m added my thoughts here on the losing weight thing.

Me= Lifeline addiction to food/sweet tooth etc. Pushing 14 stone at end of January & size 16 clothes getting too tight. Husband the same = 17 stone.

Tried every diet going for the last 30 years. 3 different (slim) colleagues suggest Keto & say look at diet doctor website and after a week of thinking I cannot give up sugar/bread/carbs etc I think fuck it, what have I got to lose?

3.5 months later husband has shed 2 stone, 4lb and I’ve lost 1stone 4lb. - more than 3.5 stone between us.

First 2 weeks not easy, bit of detox headache etc (sugar is more addictive than crack) but now we are never hungry between meals, eat loads of fat & virtually no carbs. And I’m free of my lifelong addiction to carbs. Still eat salad, veg, limited fruit so a very balanced diet. Fat dropping off, high blood pressure now normal.

Try it, might just change your life (and we still get pissed at the weekend)

www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb

Watch the docu-film “The Magic Pill” on Netflix. It’s what converted us for life.

Good luck x

Mylittlepea · 16/05/2020 20:11

*lifelong !!

Noextremes2017 · 16/05/2020 20:15

Johnson lost a stone in weight. You're kidding?

Mylittlepea · 16/05/2020 20:17

PS - my twice weekly indigestion & acid reflux stopped almost instantly and we no longer fart or burp Grin

Wauden · 16/05/2020 20:35

Observations:

People probably don't have a long hard look at themselves naked in larger sized mirror. I think that men don't as much as women. Clothes really can hide fat. I should knowBlush. Oh dear.

All sorts of savoury processed food including ham contain added sugar.

Fruit yoghurts are advertised as being low fat, but do contain lots of calories from sugar and fruit sucrose.

I am guilty of forgetting that wine can have lots of calories so I really must cut down. Wine

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/05/2020 20:43

Oh don't touch low fat yogurts 🤮
Full fat with bit of real fruit. Or quark if you want naturally low (no) fat.

So much of the "EaT ThiS aNd YoU wIlL LoSe WeiGht" are just scam, scam and scam. And often unhealthy, some downright dangerous scams.

DreamTheMoors · 16/05/2020 21:10

Topamax (generic topiramate), a prescription medication, used for migraines & seizures is also used off-label for weight loss because it suppresses the appetite. It’s NOT an upper or any “speed” type of drug. Some people suffer from side effects like nausea or dizziness and some suffer no side effects at all.
I took it for migraines at one point and lost 2 stone. I had to stop because I couldn’t afford to lose any more weight, and it wasn’t that great of a migraine preventative for me.
Talk to your doctor before using any prescribed drug. I’m not a doctor or health care professional. This was my experience only - yours might be different, but I do know it’s prescribed off-label.

juneo63 · 16/05/2020 21:19

Well said 😁

LoveBeingAMum555 · 16/05/2020 21:37

If Covid-19 is going to stay around we all need to be taking much better care of our physical and mental health to relieve pressure on the NHS. I don't know how the government gets this message across but something has to change. I am not particularly overweight but being in lockdown has made me realise that I have a poor work/life balance, too much stress, and generally don't make time for myself. I intend to make some permanent changes to my lifestyle.
