Just teacher I won't be sending DS back to school

Just got off the phone with DS teacher, we spoke about schools opening in June and she asked me if I'm planning to send him back when they open. I said no. Anyone else not sending their kids back when schools open in a few weeks?

Even a 1pm finish will help us out. I fully expect schools to be part time although I’m hoping it will be full days but less days a week.

2.2 Can schools operate a staggered return or a rota system for pupils returning from 1 June?
Schools should not plan on the basis of a rota system for pupils returning from 1 June, either daily or weekly. We are asking schools to welcome back eligible pupils full-time, and do not expect schools to implement flexible approaches, such as rota systems.

DC in Yr8, Yr10 and Yr12. I would send them all in. I believe the risk is low and nothing will be different in September; we need to find a way to manage and move forward.

If DD (Yr 10) doesn't go back to school, at least part time, for maths, science and English then the school needs to change the way they're providing her education. Setting tasks on google classroom and expecting students to understand them without any explanation or opportunity for discussion is inadequate and is likely to result in her failing her GCSEs. I'm increasingly angry about how this cohort of students are being let down by the variation in quality between schools.

nobody Thanks for the link but I’m in Scotland.

Thanks for the link but I’m in Scotland.

Fair enough, possibly still useful for others though.

MrPickles73 · 15/05/2020 21:46

Our children will be going back ASAP. Its parents' choice but I think the teachers' unions are behaving appallingly and need to step up. Other professions have just 'got on' with things e.g. prison officers.

nobodyimportant · 15/05/2020 21:49

If you think nothing will be different in September (as I've seen several people say) does that mean that you don't think cases will reduce any more now?

The government are still saying they expect numbers to continue going down and that they are trying to avoid a second wave.

Nicknacky · 15/05/2020 21:51

The virus will still be around in September, it’s not going away. I think they will reduce yes, but it won’t be gone. In my non educated opinion!

45redballoon · 15/05/2020 21:53

The unions job is to protect its members interests... they are nit behaving appallingly they are doing their job!!
And other professions have not just 'got on with it'.... everything has been risk assessed and altered to make the environment as safe as possible.. ppe has been asked for etc... the unions need to be sure that teachers will be adequately protected before they back any return to work. And good on them for doing that. I dont think we should be sending public sector workers out to die to be honest.
Look at public transport workers... it's been an absolute crime the amount public transport workers have been dying... I dont want that to happen to anyone. A workplace needs to be safe.

OneOfTheGrundys · 15/05/2020 21:55

Other professions have just 'got on' with things e.g. prison officers.
My school’s provided a full timetable online every day for every child. When staff aren’t live teaching or recording they’re marking work, returning it and calling children who have not submitted. They’ve been open for vulnerable children and children of key workers every day and all through the holiday. They’ve been delivering food to vulnerable families.
How this isn’t ‘getting on with it’ I don’t know. And before you start with ‘well MY DC’s school didn’t...’ well maybe they didn’t but don’t tar us all with the same brush.

Floatyboat · 15/05/2020 21:55

Erm no. Prison officers have just got on with it. With inadequate ppe.

Ppe is just a distraction though. I'm sure teachers can wear masks if they want but I doubt that is actually why so many are complaining about working again.

My daughter is self isolating at her student digs
I have my 86 year old mum who lives with me with underlying health conditions and diabetic with heart problems I am her sole carer ,and my husband with MS I am carer for too.
I am the only one who does the shopping
My son here too is 12 years old
He is not I gather having a date before October to go back to school.
I understand the child care needs of others but would not feel I would want to send a child back to school in my situation
I am the go between for all in my household for shopping cleaning cooking and everything
I think that all families need to weigh up their own risk of those who are going out and those who are coming back in to a house with vulnerable people
It is up to everyone individually to decide the risk in their own house
Nobody should be made to send a child back to school if they consider it a step backwards in their own safeguarding

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 15/05/2020 21:59

We will need to assess the situation in June, as we have DC shielding and one with ASD.

Useruseruserusee · 15/05/2020 22:00

The government have created the whole issue. If their science and modelling shows that schools are safe, they should have clearly set that out and explained it, rather than just saying ‘it’s safe’. I think parents and school staff should be able to see that information.

The DFE didn’t publish their guidance for primary senior leaders until 7.30pm on Thursday. That is unacceptable and gives the impression that this whole thing is rushed/ last minute without enough careful thought to safety. They need to be giving the opposite impression to reassure parents and staff who are understandably anxious about the change from crossing the road to avoid each other in the street to school.

Whole thing has been poorly done in my opinion.

Floatyboat · 15/05/2020 22:04

@Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse

Does ASD mean you're more or less inclined to send them to school.

juneo63 · 15/05/2020 22:31

I don't blame you, I wouldn't send mine! With this new illness children can catch (Kawasaki)
And the kids may be ok, but not the teachers, TA, s and other staff!
Government are using our children as guinea pigs to watch!! 😒

Floatyboat · 15/05/2020 22:37

@June

Do you actually think that?

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 15/05/2020 23:04

@Floatyboat

They admitted that themselves when they said that certain year groups would go back and they would monitor the situation and see if its safe for other year group

Floatyboat · 15/05/2020 23:07

Thats what you would hope surely?! You'd rather they don't gather any data on it?

starlight13 · 15/05/2020 23:12

Why are so many people saying that teachers need to be fully prepared before the grand staged opening of schools?Schools have never been closed in the first place and have always remained open for keyworkers and vulnerable children etc. The teachers are already in school dealing with social distancing, albeit come June with more pupils, but it's not as if they aren't already going in to school to work.

Barbie222 · 15/05/2020 23:18

@starlight13 Have a Biscuit while you think about what might need to happen in just over 2 weeks.

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 15/05/2020 23:20

@Floatyboat you're contradicting yourself as much as the government there 🤣

HorsesDoovers · 15/05/2020 23:26

@Floatyboat you do realise teachers haven't actually stopped working??

Floatyboat · 15/05/2020 23:30

Guinea pigs are usually used in some kind of interventional study. What the government is doing is observational data gathering. Hardly the same as treating children as Guinea pigs

Alizzle · 15/05/2020 23:31

My ds is in year 3. He is an only and if I could send him tomorrow I would. He is really missing his friends, we're crap at teaching him, and he's started being really sad and bored. We've been really lucky(or not depending on how you look at it) dh is furloughed and I'm working from home for the foreseeable. I just feel really shit about my kids future and the quicker I can help him to feel normal I will do it. There is evidence that most children dont get harsh symptoms or pass it to adults. I'm not sure what the issue is really

Loveita · 15/05/2020 23:34

Back to school. Back to work. Back to freedom. Continuing to look after myself, eat well and maintain a good immune system.
