Just got off the phone with DS teacher, we spoke about schools opening in June and she asked me if I'm planning to send him back when they open. I said no. Anyone else not sending their kids back when schools open in a few weeks?

There are dozens of threads you could have joined.

Schools in Scotland will probably not open in June.
But if they did, I would keep DS off. It still feels far too early.

Floatyboat · 14/05/2020 15:55

Sending mine. Even assuming they get the virus the risk of death for kids and adults under 50 is very low. School has lots of benefits.

Straycatstrut · 14/05/2020 16:08

Mine are going straight back and we will be celebrating.

I do really worry how the schools will cope with re-opening. It must be so stressful trying to organise a way to do it fairly and safely. Really feel for all the teachers and staff.

RainbowGlittersandSparkles · 14/05/2020 16:11

If I had kids I’d be sending them.

hiredandsqueak · 14/05/2020 16:11

My dd has been going throughout and will continue to attend.

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 14/05/2020 16:12

Good for you that you have the option not to

Nicknacky · 14/05/2020 16:13

I’m in Scotland so unfortunately don’t have the opinion, but I would have sent my kids if I did.

tiredanddangerous · 14/05/2020 16:14

I don’t think they will actually open on 1st June. It just won’t be possible to keep everyone safe.

CaryStoppins · 14/05/2020 16:14

I think schools will be relying on 50% staying off.

Tootletum · 14/05/2020 16:16

Life is not safe. None of us are getting out aliveGrin

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/05/2020 16:17

Mine's not in the year groups going back but I'll be sending him when they do.

HeyBlaby · 14/05/2020 16:18

My child has significantly more chance of dying of countless other things. He will be going (athough can understand parents who are worried)

KKSlider · 14/05/2020 16:18

This school have published on their website what school will look like for those pupils returning in June, although only nine parents have said their children will be returning.

www.cambois.northumberland.sch.uk/website

For anyone who doesn't want to click the link it reminds parents that school will not be the same school the children are used to or expecting. That operating the school in this way goes against their entire ethos and that they are worried about the emotional and mental impact it will have on the children and it gives details of the practicalities which are:

  • Children will be with one teacher in one group and not necessarily with the same groups of children they were with in March. They may not be with the teacher or classroom they had in March.
  • They will have to remain in that classroom for the duration of the day. They cannot mix with the groups of children in the other classrooms.

-They will have set times for the toilet which will need cleaned by the teacher after they have been used. Only one child allowed to the toilet at a time.

  • They will sit at desks 2m apart. This includes the children in Reception.
  • Their classrooms will have all unnecessary furniture and equipment removed and all soft furnishings removed.
  • The classroom will be cleaned 3 times per day. The bins emptied throughout the day, desks cleaned and sprayed throughout. The classroom will be deep cleaned at the end of every day too.
  • They will work at their desks. They will not sit on the carpet.
  • They will not be able to bring anything from home. No reading books, no packed lunch boxes, no pencil cases.
  • They will be provided with a see-through pencil case and equipment that will only be used and touched by them. These will be cleaned at the end of the day by the teacher.
  • When any other equipment is used it will then need cleaned before other children use or touch it.
  • When outside playing equipment like the climbing frame and bikes will not be able to be used as it is recommended these are cleaned afterwards but we would not have that facility or staff to do that at that stage.
  • They will have some lessons that involve a lot of independent learning as the teacher will not be able to go side by side or sit next to them to give them targeted support needed. The teacher needs to keep social distance when teaching (the amount of distance keeps varying – to the public it is 2m but it has not been confirmed yet if this is the case for schools so we are operating on the same as the general public)
  • Only one parent is allowed to drop of their child.
  • This parent is NOT allowed to enter the school building or have the daily contact or conversation they need or are used to having.
  • They will eat lunches in their classroom or we will have to finish early and send them home with their lunch.
  • If they fall over or have a toileting accident if we cannot source PPE or masks (personally I do not want teachers having to wear masks in order not to scare children) they will be encouraged to change themselves and clean their scrape or cut. IF this is not possible the parent will be called to collect them so they can do that at home.
  • It is advised corridor are split and marked off to save children having to walk past people without a social distance.
  • Year 6 will not be able to have a leavers assembly, a reward trip or the usual end of year events.
  • There will be no sports day
  • No assemblies

This is not my DCs school, this is something shared on FB from a school elsewhere in our county but I know from what DCs schools have said that they will be operating on a similar basis. My DC are not returning to school for the foreseeable future.

Mullikins · 14/05/2020 16:19

Not sure yet. I will assess nearer the time.

Myfriendanxiety · 14/05/2020 16:22

@Floatyboat just make sure you find out exactly what “school” will look like for your child and that you are happy they will cope with it.

6 hours sat at the same desk isn’t how I would want a 4 year old to experience school and so I’m not sending mine yet.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 14/05/2020 16:29

I'm in NI and our school year ends at the end of June so even if the option was there it would be a resounding nope from me.

Suzanne12 · 14/05/2020 16:30

I have a year 1 and nursery class child so 1 should be going back before the other. We've been getting on just fine with learning at home despite still having to work from home and husband working outside the home so I really doubt I'm going to send them back for a good while yet. I'm not fearful of the virus as none of us are vulnerable but I think it's in my kids best interests to carry on as we are until I can be sure that school would actually be beneficial. I think they're learning more at home than they normally would at school so it's just the social aspect they're missing out on but the rules might means they won't be able to be very social at school anyway. It's obviously different for people who have to go out to work but for me right now it's works fine to keep the kids at home for longer so I will.

Onone · 14/05/2020 16:33

I don’t know,it depends on what will actually happen in class,I don’t want to send her but she’s really missing school

lunar1 · 14/05/2020 16:34

Probably not, I have a big list of questions I want answers to before I'd consider it.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 14/05/2020 16:34

Yes, I am sending mine back ASAP. They need their education and they need it for their mental health.

DefConOne · 14/05/2020 16:35

Not another thread about this. I can’t wait for mine to go back. The risk to children is vanishingly small. But the schools won’t be opening any time soon so you have nothing to worry about.

TiredMummyXYZ · 14/05/2020 16:41

I’m a year 1 teacher and parent and my own kids aren’t going back yet. The example above is precisely the sorts of measures we are having to implement at just a few weeks notice (and even then we don’t know it will be safe for children and staff). Realistically we can only accommodate a very small percentage of the overall school population so kids will only be in a max of 2 days per week anyway at my school and even then we are struggling with rotas. I’m afraid it’s not going to be the return that many seem to be hoping for.
