To wish we had been completely wrong

Many of us were trying to warn people to mentally prepare for what was coming at the end of January, early February. Watching with horror at what was unfolding in China it was inevitable a pandemic was hurtling towards us like a freight train, only it was coming at 10mph and was still somewhere off in the distance. Nevertheless it was coming, and nothing could stop it. Any suggestion of this was met with accusations that we were revelling in the drama and being hysterical. The mention that it could linger in the air, was highly contagious and affecting millions was ludicrous and again we were berated and reported because what we said didn’t match the narrative from the news here in the UK.

We were sneered at and accused of scaremongering for even suggesting the possibility of a lockdown or that we would face living with this virus indefinitely. I think I can speak on behalf of all of those when I say we were hoping none of this would happen and that the sneers were for good reason, though this wasn’t meant to be.

This is now our new normality, a new world, again something I had posts reported for because it was a ‘fantastical’ ideology, that we were some frenzied lunatic fringe spreading conspiracy theories and talking about new normals as if we were disciples of David Icke.

How we move forward now will define our civilisation for generations, we are taking tentative steps towards a new set of rules and behaviours. What comes next no one can be sure of, it’s a new lifestyle we must learn to live in and accept. One day there will be a vaccine, a cure, a therapy, a way out. Until then, we carry on, stay safe.

Please do not label those with worries, fears and concerns as Dementors, yes I see those threads and frankly they are despicable and I am embarrassed for you that you openly mock those who have concerns, questions or fears about this virus. Your motivation for having to resort to name calling or compartmentalising us I will never understand, it says a lot about your character.

To those who were mocked, how do you feel now we are over the first wave? I am very relieved that society has stayed glued together for the most part, we are far more resilient than I first anticipated. The deprivation and societal impact will surely unfold as we go on, the economic damage will be immense, the mental health impact will be just as devastating.

I just wish in this instance I had been absolutely wrong and we would all be carrying on with life as I am sure everyone else does. I miss my family, interaction with people at work, being able to walk into a shop straight away and so much more.

@Wehttam seeing as you know more than the WHO, what do suggest our next steps are? (Serious question)

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 14/05/2020 14:33

I'm surprised people think the 'old normal' was so good.
Busy destroying the planet at warp factor 10. Shopping shopping shopping. Aim in life to get a high paid job. ............ really? That was good?

If I was worried about shopping I could just order online.

No, I don't think the old normal was perfect, far from it, but I miss seeing my family and friends. I miss going to work. I will need a dentist appointment and to see a physio. I want to have my hair done and I want to go to the pub.

Shopping, not so much.

ekidmxcl · 14/05/2020 14:33

I wrote on a thread probably sometime in February/March that covid was going to be the biggest crisis since WW2 or words to that effect and I got pounced on as though I was insane.

BirdieFriendReturns · 14/05/2020 14:33

I’m more worried about having a demon Birdie Friend TBH.

The messiah he predicted hasn’t come along yet. When that happens, I’ll be scared.

JovialNickname · 14/05/2020 14:34

Yes to me too the term Dementor refers to those that see popping out for a pint of milk as akin to gunning down your neighbours in the street. Not those that have legitimate worries and fears about themselves or their loved ones.

BirdieFriendReturns · 14/05/2020 14:34

Butterfly has gone missing, I fear BF has eaten it.

To wish we had been completely wrong
MorrisZapp · 14/05/2020 14:35

Dementors: I'm not going out until there's a vaccine

Also dementors: I won't be having the vaccine. It'll kill me.

Bonus points if they think every sunny day will result in 'more deaths' and that although our lockdown is unworthy of the name, any easing of it is a 'cull'.

NoCaseToAnswer · 14/05/2020 14:36

Dementors are the ones that post 'send him in with a body bag' on threads about schools going back.

The ones that were reporting numerous HCPs to MNHQ for saying their hospitals were quiet and there wasn't enough work to do for many (not all) as they must be liars or Government plants.

The ones that claim the Nightingale Hospitals were only not used due to lack of staff when most had full staffing and just have not been needed.

The ones talking about mass graves being dug and ice skating rinks prepared to be used as morgues, when in the early days of lockdown someone asked if it was okay to buy mascara with their big shop or drive their kid around the block because its the only way they'll sleep and Mum was on her knees with PND.

Plus there have been the other posters who enjoyed telling posters with MH problems struggling with lockdown, that they needed to grow a back bone, be resilient and stop making excuses because you'd kill their Mum by going out for a walk more than once a day (which you were 'allowed' to anyway in England).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/05/2020 14:36

@EdwinaMay the life where I got to see my family, go out with my friends, enjoy travelling, concerts, festivals, going out for dinner?

It was bloody great and I want it back.

ofwarren · 14/05/2020 14:37

@Wehttam my youngest and I ended up with coronavirus symptoms. He just had a cough and a temperature and was quite breathless but for me it was awful. Really really scary.
While ill I just couldn't bring myself to read the stats.
I think the whole thing has been handled terribly by the government and feel like there is no end in sight, especially with us shielding but at some point, the 'well' people will have to try and get a semblance of normal again as we have no idea if and when a treatment or vaccine will be available.
I don't think now is the time personally, I think we need less deaths each day first but society cannot just stop when we don't even know if we will ever eradicate this.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 14/05/2020 14:38

The interesting thing about dementors is that they are very rarely the people who have a right to complain about people's behaviour. They aren't the supermarket workers who would rather that the people who came daily came every other day or the hospital workers who see how truly awful this illness is.

BronwenFrideswide · 14/05/2020 14:38

CarlottaValdez I remember it stuck with me as one of the low points of the covid chat on here) you gleefully proclaiming that the “damn had burst” when one hospital ran low on oxygen. I don’t remember many individual posts from anyone but that was a real mask slip. You appeared utterly delighted.

That was this poster was it? I referred to that ludicrous comment in my earlier post but couldn't remember the name of the poster and cba to look for it. If it was you Wehttam would you like to correct that post now and apologise for being wrong, especially in view of your laudatory post about being right? Do you think that post falls under the description of concerns, questions or fears? You did come across as utterly delighted that your dystopian nightmare was, totally incorrectly as it turned out, happening.

CarlottaValdez · 14/05/2020 14:45

It was - I did find it to check:

04/04/2020 15:42 Wehttam

The dam is about to burst is what this means.

EVERYONE STAY AT HOME!!!!!!!!

Wehttam · 14/05/2020 14:46

@itsaweddingone I’m not entirely sure, but I’d be dragging my feet instead of stepping if that makes sense.

I think Where people are interacting with the public workers should be given PPE, shops, schools, public transport drivers etc.

I would be taking the temperature of anyone boarding a bus, train, tram, shop, school etc as a secondary precaution.

I would allow bars and restaurants with outdoor spaces to reopen with strict protocols on social distancing if takeaway isn’t an option for them.

NoCaseToAnswer · 14/05/2020 14:47

@EdwinaMay

I think you need to step out of your bubble. For millions of people the old normal wasn't 'shopping, shopping, shopping..and the aim of life to get a high paid job'.

Millions were in low paid jobs just to put food on the table and definitely not 'shopping, shopping, shopping'.

And now many of them don't have their jobs or their jobs are at risk and therefore their homes. Along with the associated MH problems caused by that and the social isolation of lockdown and support systems falling away.

So yeah, the old normal was better for them but it definitely wasn't about shopping and trying to get the highest paid jobHmm

Hobnobswantshernameback · 14/05/2020 14:48

Still waiting for some constructive comments about how we move forward as opposed to the doom mongering and gloating
Nah didn't think so
Doesn't suit the goady agenda
Bit vile really
Revelling in making other people feel anxious and scared
Makes you wonder about what sort of person does that for the LOLs

Wehttam · 14/05/2020 14:52

@CarlottaValdez if you read the whole thread the concern about Oxygen supply at the point when our numbers hadn’t peaked was a genuine one. The dam being referred to was the NHS and again, if you read the thread there was a distinct possibility they had ran out of oxygen.

With that in mind @BronwenFrideswide I won’t apologise for telling people to stay home because there was a genuine fear the wave had overwhelmed the healthcare system.

OP posts:
Snorkelface · 14/05/2020 14:53

You're opening bars and restaurants? Why? If they have a doorway takeaway/delivery is an option. There isn't a single food outlet here that hasn't been open for business apart from chains.

And what level PPE are you talking about

BronwenFrideswide · 14/05/2020 14:54

CarlottaValdez ta!

Over to you Wehttam, are you going to admit you were, whisper it, wrong?

Wehttam · 14/05/2020 14:54

@Hobnobswantshernameback read the post to @itsaweddingone you’ll see I answered your question there. Goady agenda? Not sure what you’re alluding to there but if it makes you happy. Stay safe 😊

Just a couple of the little smug comments to be found in your posting history. I particularly enjoy the 'good luck everyone!' Grin

Hobnobswantshernameback · 14/05/2020 14:56

No you
You have some very vague non information
Structured plan regarding how we move forward? I don't think so

Reginabambina · 14/05/2020 14:57

I don’t think anyone was sneering at anyone who was raising reasonable concerns back then. Likewise not one is calling anyone who raises a reasonable concern now a dementor.

Wehttam · 14/05/2020 14:57

@Snorkelface masks and gloves primarily.

I would open them if they had outdoor seating and social distancing was properly enforced.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 14/05/2020 14:57

This was the poster who quoted that shite poem as well
Said all our lives would be so much better post covid because we'd all sit round smelling the coffee
