To wish we had been completely wrong

Many of us were trying to warn people to mentally prepare for what was coming at the end of January, early February. Watching with horror at what was unfolding in China it was inevitable a pandemic was hurtling towards us like a freight train, only it was coming at 10mph and was still somewhere off in the distance. Nevertheless it was coming, and nothing could stop it. Any suggestion of this was met with accusations that we were revelling in the drama and being hysterical. The mention that it could linger in the air, was highly contagious and affecting millions was ludicrous and again we were berated and reported because what we said didn’t match the narrative from the news here in the UK.

We were sneered at and accused of scaremongering for even suggesting the possibility of a lockdown or that we would face living with this virus indefinitely. I think I can speak on behalf of all of those when I say we were hoping none of this would happen and that the sneers were for good reason, though this wasn’t meant to be.

This is now our new normality, a new world, again something I had posts reported for because it was a ‘fantastical’ ideology, that we were some frenzied lunatic fringe spreading conspiracy theories and talking about new normals as if we were disciples of David Icke.

How we move forward now will define our civilisation for generations, we are taking tentative steps towards a new set of rules and behaviours. What comes next no one can be sure of, it’s a new lifestyle we must learn to live in and accept. One day there will be a vaccine, a cure, a therapy, a way out. Until then, we carry on, stay safe.

Please do not label those with worries, fears and concerns as Dementors, yes I see those threads and frankly they are despicable and I am embarrassed for you that you openly mock those who have concerns, questions or fears about this virus. Your motivation for having to resort to name calling or compartmentalising us I will never understand, it says a lot about your character.

To those who were mocked, how do you feel now we are over the first wave? I am very relieved that society has stayed glued together for the most part, we are far more resilient than I first anticipated. The deprivation and societal impact will surely unfold as we go on, the economic damage will be immense, the mental health impact will be just as devastating.

I just wish in this instance I had been absolutely wrong and we would all be carrying on with life as I am sure everyone else does. I miss my family, interaction with people at work, being able to walk into a shop straight away and so much more.

Also not seeing the children being left to die and refused medical treatment because they have asthma. Maybe OP will admit to being wrong on that?

trappedsincesundaymorn · 15/05/2020 18:19

Maybe OP will admit to being wrong on that

Good luck with that.

bellinisurge · 15/05/2020 18:39

@bunbunbun
Things ran out because some people did panic buying. The loo roll I bought extra with every shop several months ago made no difference whatsoever.

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/05/2020 18:39

I neither stockpiled nor panic bought, and not once did I have to wipe my arse on a leaf.

YouTheCat · 15/05/2020 18:49

Well, we'll be in lock down for a fair bit longer. The R rating is above 1 which is really bad.

CarlottaValdez · 15/05/2020 18:53

What’s the relevance of that to this thread? Have you posted in the wrong place?

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/05/2020 19:04

Groan. At least check your facts before posting things that are irrelevant to a thread. No it isn’t. It’s between 0.7 and 1. That means below 1. And the rise is due to the situation in care homes. Community transmission is much lower.

Russellbrandshair · 15/05/2020 20:20

The R rating is above 1 which is really bad

WRONG. It’s not over 1. Check your facts first otherwise you look like an idiot

bunbunbun · 15/05/2020 20:27

@youthecat

Well, we'll be in lock down for a fair bit longer. The R rating is above 1 which is really bad.

It isn't above 1 though, so why have you posted that here as if it is fact? It simply isn't true. A quick google will show you that. What was the reason for you spreading information that is wrong instead of fact checking? You can't have heard from a reputable source that it was above 1 because that hasn't been reported.

Alsohuman · 15/05/2020 20:29

R’s way below 1 everywhere except the north east.

YouTheCat · 15/05/2020 20:30

Sorry, I did read that it was but can no longer find it so am presuming it was wrong and has been taken down. I can't remember which source it was either so that's handy. Glad to be wrong.

Furries · 15/05/2020 21:02

I ended up ignoring the corona virus section as was getting fed up with the posting style of a number of people. I particularly remember your name as being a poster whose tone I thought was really rather gross, dramatic and completely unhelpful.

Never before have I taken a screenshot of anyone’s post, but I made an exception one day as I wanted to remind myself of how dramatic over the top it was.

The majority of people on this thread have all commented on your tone of posting. Hopefully that’s something you can reflect on - it might help you to actually be more constructive and help people through this situation.

We will move on and keep plodding. As we must do, and as we always do. Such is life.

I've been watching the Walking Dead from the beginning during lockdown. It has massively helped my sense of perspective. I'd like to recommend it to all. Grin

OneOfTheHerd · 16/05/2020 08:33

I have been watching too much Outlander, I realised this when my DH asked me a question and my reply was:

Dinna fash husband, I dinna ken where it is! Grin

Alsohuman · 16/05/2020 08:37

Bloody hell @Furries, that post is dementor epitomised. No wonder OP doesn’t like the term!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/05/2020 09:00

Yes, I watched it and I noticed a woeful lack of preparation there, if only they'd worn a face mask none of this Z nonsense would have happened.

I strongly suspect The Walking Dead was the source for OP's predictions.

chatterbugmegastar · 16/05/2020 09:15

Is the OP a goady journo? Confused

The thing is, dress it up however you like, and yes some did foresee a worse situation than what has come about.

But many, many were right and were subject to abusive posts and HQ getting involved. I can think of at least 1 poster who has disappeared, presumed banned, who got her arse handed to her. But she was right. It did spread due to half term holidays that were non-essential. It did start off with one primary TA in Berkshire who sadly did ignore advice

You have to assume in situations like this that whilst many will do as they are asked, and wash their hands, and keep distance, and wear a mask, and stay home. Not everyone will.
We live in a society that has pretty much the freedom to do what it likes as long as they can afford to.
We know for instance drugs are banned, but it doesn't stop people necking them. We also know how deadly smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy meals is, doesn't stop lots of the population carrying on regardless.

To simply suggest that when the WHO, PHE or Boris said, do what you can, if you have symptoms stay home, if you've been to a hotspot, stay home, if you know you've come into contact with someone who has tested positive, stay home, it doesn't tally that 100% of the population will.

Look at the morons about to embark on lockdown disobedience in the park today. Biligerent fools who run the risk of causing a spike in their area. Where do these people work? They could very well spread it far further than just the people in the park with them.

The same people who have ignored the rules will no doubt be quick to complain when the economy is screwed for years, when pubs and holiday places and shops they enjoyed are shut permanently, when there is huge joblessness. But they won't think that they contributed to it.

Put simply, at the last general election, people complained of years of underinvestment. And they voted for more of the same due to the Murdoch press told them to. The NHS warned of what could happen. And whilst it didn't struggle everywhere, it did in some places. And we still have the possible second wave- if that hits in flu season, I dread to think what will happen.

BillywilliamV · 16/05/2020 10:11

Try the audiobook of "The Stand" by Stephen King, it is awesome..in the true sense of the word.

Also all these people that "take no pleasure in being right" make me feel sick!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/05/2020 10:23

Look at the morons about to embark on lockdown disobedience in the park today.

Yes, there is no bigger disobedience statement than sitting on a park bench with packet of crisps.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon that's not what I'm referring to and unless you've been living under a rock you know it

It's the much advertised Break the Lockdown picnics happening round the country this afternoon, where they intend to not socially distance, and to deliberately cause a disturbance as apparently they know so much more than scientists, medical staff and the WHO.

Didthatreallyhappen2 · 16/05/2020 11:20

I haven't heard of "Break the Lockdown" picnics. Really?

NoCaseToAnswer · 16/05/2020 11:55

I haven't heard of these picnics and Google suggests they haven't been 'widely advertised'. Could only find a couple of articles about this being suggested in Scotland and associated with far right groups.
