To wish we had been completely wrong

Many of us were trying to warn people to mentally prepare for what was coming at the end of January, early February. Watching with horror at what was unfolding in China it was inevitable a pandemic was hurtling towards us like a freight train, only it was coming at 10mph and was still somewhere off in the distance. Nevertheless it was coming, and nothing could stop it. Any suggestion of this was met with accusations that we were revelling in the drama and being hysterical. The mention that it could linger in the air, was highly contagious and affecting millions was ludicrous and again we were berated and reported because what we said didn’t match the narrative from the news here in the UK.

We were sneered at and accused of scaremongering for even suggesting the possibility of a lockdown or that we would face living with this virus indefinitely. I think I can speak on behalf of all of those when I say we were hoping none of this would happen and that the sneers were for good reason, though this wasn’t meant to be.

This is now our new normality, a new world, again something I had posts reported for because it was a ‘fantastical’ ideology, that we were some frenzied lunatic fringe spreading conspiracy theories and talking about new normals as if we were disciples of David Icke.

How we move forward now will define our civilisation for generations, we are taking tentative steps towards a new set of rules and behaviours. What comes next no one can be sure of, it’s a new lifestyle we must learn to live in and accept. One day there will be a vaccine, a cure, a therapy, a way out. Until then, we carry on, stay safe.

Please do not label those with worries, fears and concerns as Dementors, yes I see those threads and frankly they are despicable and I am embarrassed for you that you openly mock those who have concerns, questions or fears about this virus. Your motivation for having to resort to name calling or compartmentalising us I will never understand, it says a lot about your character.

To those who were mocked, how do you feel now we are over the first wave? I am very relieved that society has stayed glued together for the most part, we are far more resilient than I first anticipated. The deprivation and societal impact will surely unfold as we go on, the economic damage will be immense, the mental health impact will be just as devastating.

I just wish in this instance I had been absolutely wrong and we would all be carrying on with life as I am sure everyone else does. I miss my family, interaction with people at work, being able to walk into a shop straight away and so much more.

Oh dear, OP. You came on expecting an ego boost, unending gratitude for your superior knowledge and what? Maybe even a medal? Instead your bubble has been burst. I'm not surprised you have flounced.

You know the saying: pride comes before a fall.

No, I haven't heard of the picnics. Not sure that makes me living under a rock.

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/05/2020 12:53

I only heard of the picnics when I saw them mentioned on here so looked them up. Haven’t seen them advertised anywhere.

Aren't you aware of how other countries have escaped with lower death tolls? I'm not encouraging you to worry about it now but we could have responded differently by doing a number of things-earlier lockdown (Boris is unbelievable-he actually thinks we timed our lockdown perfectly with the peak of the epidemic, not realising caused the numbers to fall through lockdown, thereby leaving the high numbers before that to be defined as the peak). Seriously, with someone like that in charge, I don't know how you can justify not thinking, even if you don't worry. To get out of lockdown we need to do some very clever work with testing and tracing. What are the chances. What are the chances.

0v9 yes I agree but what can I do about it. I never said I didn’t think or indeed research but ultimately I have no control over it. I can’t control others behaviours or the Gvt decision only my own environment.

But beyond that I don’t see the need to live through this crisis in a constant worse case scenario. I have been well aware a pandemic is coming and although it could have been better it could have been a lot lot worse and still could.

Slowly things are coming out the other end and I would rather focus on the positives of this in my life.

I know exactly how other countries have dealt with it but I can hardly move now. I dislike Boris he has consistently shown himself to be incompetent. Never voted for him never will

Absolutely but without criticism, concern and pressure we can't trust the government to take us out of this at all-it's not a given. I agree though, enjoy life as much as you can.

Quartz2208 · 17/05/2020 08:51

Aah 0v9 then it appears I am actually more cynical then you! This Gvt (particularly Cummings) is never going to listen to criticism/concern/pressure. Johnson is going to make whatever decisions benefit him (as he did in Brexit, he went leave as he saw it as his ticket to power not because he believed) his principles and belief are whatever will get him what he wants.
And it’s a virus we can’t fight it or reason with it we can merely hope that if we get it we can fight it off.

I lost any faith in that years ago so there is really no point me using headspace on it now. We do seem to have some fantastic researchers and scientists so will have faith in them

I understand. Boris does want to be liked though.

Quartz2208 · 17/05/2020 16:59

Boris wants to be adored and will change his rhetoric to whatever he thinks will get him that adoration

Watched BBC news today with David Miliband on it. Such a shame he never made leader he talked so much sense

bellinisurge · 17/05/2020 17:03

Stop calling him Boris. Like he's a cuddly cartoon pal.
