To take sertraline while breast feeding?

As my gp wasn't clear at all. At first she said not too...then she asked how old my baby was - he's 20 months and I'm so ready to stop - and she said that's fine and prescribed it. Then ds started crying and I had to end the call but I'm not sure wether to take it or wether she's prescribed it for when I've stopped breastfeeding.

Obviously I can ring and make another appointment but just thought I'd ask here first...

I was swapped to sertraline when breastfeeding. It's fine.

Same. I was swapped to it in pregnancy and told it was safe to continue. #3 is now nearly 3 and still feeding.

I don't get on with sertraline at all and I'm gutted because it's the only drug the doc can offer me while breastfeeding, so I presume it's pretty safe!

It’s absolutely fine. I breastfed two dc on 200mg sertraline. I did a lot of research first and sertraline is the safest during breastfeeding. Amounts passing into breast milk are minimal. I switched to it because it is the safest.

sideeyeing your GP is misinformed. The Drugs in Breastmilk helpline should be able to give you better info.
Most antidepressants are ok to breastfeed on. Sertraline passes into breastmilk in the smallest quantity and has the shortest half life. But there are plenty of other antidepressants you can take.

Thanks all - if I could just ask at what time of the day did you take it? I know how crappy it can make you feel so is night time best?

Generally best to take an ssri in the morning as they can stop you sleeping

I bf on sertraline and I switched to taking it in the evening because mornings when I woke up were the worst time of the day. Negative thoughts etc. Taking it in the evening helped with that

Another one prescribed it specifically for breastfeeding, I was taken off it for pregnancy (replaced by citalopram) and put back on after I gave birth. I take 100mg.

When I had post-part I’m anxiety, my doctor spent a bunch of time researching the best med for breastfeeding. Sertraline was the clear winner.

I’m pregnant and breastfeeding and taking sertraline. It is safe to take while breastfeeding, not only at low doses as someone else said. It might take a while to find the right dose for you. I take it at night and it doesn’t affect my sleep.

Just to check, are you taking the mini pill? I only ask as it's prescribed to a lot of breastfeeding women and it can make you v depressed so if you are I'd stop taking that first x

I took 50mg throughout my pregnancy and 14 months of breastfeeding. And now doing so through second pregnancy. I take it in the morning. Doctor was absolutely fine about it.
