Hi all

Not sure if this is allowed but I’m not asking for medical advice just people’s opinion on what they would do in my situation.

I had cold/flu type symptoms all of January. I couldn’t seem to shake off whatever it was but it wasn’t anything overly terrible. Then around February time, I can’t remember when exactly, I got a sort of chill in my chest. I remember going out for a walk when it was really cold and afterwards when I would take a deep breath I could feel a sort of rattle but didn’t develop any cough or breathlessness.

Over the space of a few weeks from end of Feb/early March my chest started to wheeze, usually at night when lying down. If I coughed or moved positions it would stop. But sometimes the wheezy squeaky sound would be really loud and it did freak me out. This carried on for a couple of weeks. My dr gave me a course of antibiotics incase I had a viral infection that wouldn’t shift but they made no difference. Again I didn’t have a continuous cough or any breathlessness. Just this wheezy sound and sometimes that chill feeling in my chest when I took a deep breath.

The dr then got me to do an at home peak flow asthma test for two weeks. The results didn’t show I was asthmatic. The wheezyness has eased slightly and I’ve only had it maybe once or twice a week for a few minutes and as I say, coughing a couple of times usually clears it. I haven’t had that chilled feeling as much either though sometimes it is still there.

I don’t have any allergies that I know of or smoke. I thought maybe it was all the cleaning stuff I’ve been using but I’ve had it on days when I’ve not done any cleaning. Doesn’t seem to matter whether I’ve been inside or outside either.

The dr said as long as I’m not getting breathless or have any other symptoms they aren’t overly worried. I am overweight and this virus situation has spurred me on to shift some weight but I don’t see that it would be my weight alone causing it?

I’m worried. I don’t know if maybe I’ve had the virus and this is the effect it’s had on me and it’ll just take time for it to go away completely. Or more worryingly, if I haven’t had it, I’m worried that something else is underlying now and I may be at greater risk if I do get the virus of having complications.

I don’t want to put any more pressure on my GP as I know they’re really busy. But I am scared. I’m 30 with a young baby and I’m really worried about what might happen. What would you do?

Thanks for reading.

After antibiotics not helping and the test showing youre not asthmatic i'd want them to refer me for an x ray or something to see what is going on in there. All the best OP i hope youre better soon

I don’t see that it would be my weight alone causing it?

But it is possible.

What is the bottom line?

High BMI is associated with high risk of wheezing without asthma, but not with high risk of asthma without wheezing. In the future, doctors should be hesitant to prescribe anti-inflammatory asthma medication to obese individuals only because they wheeze.

You should speak to the GP again, that’s what they are there for. Did they listen to your chest at some point? I would hope so. It sounds as if you are quite anxious about it so you do need to make an appointment to discuss your concerns.

No I haven’t physically been to the Dr as they aren’t seeing people unless it’s urgent. It’s all been done over the phone.

I’m even more worried now. Do you think I should call them and request for more investigation then? They seemed really blasé about it all. But it isn’t normal for me at all.
