Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

The cynic in me says the government will push for tourist places to reopen soon

It won't.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 14/05/2020 07:42

So many people all falling out with each other over a virus none of us wanted and which we will only conquer by sticking together.

Very sad. 😢

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 07:44

People thinking we are unwelcoming is the least of our worries tbh

We have very few cases and people are keen to keep it that way.

Chiyo666 · 14/05/2020 07:44

No just stay away this year. Beaches and parks are probably going to be the only thing open and with social distancing measures in place, it’s not fair for tourists to come and take up all that space. Let us enjoy it for one summer.

Easilyanxious · 14/05/2020 07:44

I know Cornwall only has one hospital but I don't get the dont come because our hospital can't cope with you
If I were to come on holiday and showed any signs of illness I would automatically get in my car and drive home to self isolate and usually hospital isn't needed in first few days so I wouldn't be going to local hospital
I would get people being worried about others bringing the virus with them and then transmitting to locals that would then need the hospital ?

Coffeepot72 · 14/05/2020 07:46

I thought 4 July was earliest possible date?

But it might be worth noting that people who live in Devon and Cornwall don’t actually own the area ...... I live in a tourist area (far further north) and realise that I have no ability or right to control tourism. So I am hoping to be in Cornwall in August if the restrictions allow it

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 07:46

Erm, yes that's what we are worried about.

Sandybval · 14/05/2020 07:47

It won't

I bet it will, you can tell by the extension to the furlough scheme their intentions.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 07:48

But it might be worth noting that people who live in Devon and Cornwall don’t actually own the area

They own the restaurants shops and cafes though that will not be open.

Nquartz · 14/05/2020 07:48

It might be worth checking money saving expert for anyone who is struggling with the holiday companies, I recently filled.in a survey from them about holiday companies who aren't allowing refunds etc. So they can put pressure on them or try to support the customers

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 07:49

Sandybval

The extensions to the furlough scheme are so that places can stay closed.

Easilyanxious · 14/05/2020 07:49

Thing is why is all the responsibility being put on the holiday maker why aren't locals pressurising the holiday cottage owners and holiday parks not to open
If Simone has paid a £1000 and the holiday park says we are open they are going to go rather than loose £1000
And as we have been told no staying away at moment surely all may / June holidays should be being cancelled and deposits paid back and July holidays maybe final balances pushed back a few weeks until we see the outcome

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/05/2020 07:51

We're hoping caravan sites open 4th July as we're booked for Devon on 13th. If the road map the Government have set out does work then pubs, shops etc should be starting to open.

We always take all our own food and are completely self sufficient in the van so don't need to use shower blocks etc.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 07:52

They are.

Sandybval · 14/05/2020 07:53

The extensions to the furlough scheme are so that places can stay closed.

If you look at the mechanics of it, it's quite clear they are expecting the vast majority of people on it to be back working, at least part time soon. I'm not saying I agree, but they would much rather take the risk on behalf of people in those areas and get holiday makers to keep livliehoods afloat than themselves.

TheRealMrsKeanuReeves · 14/05/2020 07:53

How long is the wedding???? Just reschedule to another weekend 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sunnyhopefulness · 14/05/2020 07:54

I’m from a holiday destination - the locals where I come from do not want the tourists to visit - looking at social media - I imagine you would be made to feel very unwelcome .

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 07:54

HollyBollyBooBoo they may start to open pubs but I can't see holiday parks opening this year.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 07:55

it's quite clear they are expecting the vast majority of people on it to be back working, at least part time soon

Not until September and even then not pubs and holiday places.

Easilyanxious · 14/05/2020 07:57

@ITonyah but my point was at those saying out hospital can't cope with you, as in the tourist

ivykaty44 · 14/05/2020 07:58

It’s all very well Devonshire & Cornish people saying tourists don’t come, you need to tell yourselves - give back the money you’ve taken for the holidays so tourists don’t come. Without giving refunds the message is loud and clear, we want your money BUT

Amatteroftime · 14/05/2020 07:58

Honestly, this thread has really changed my view about ever visiting Devon or Cornwall again. Such unwelcoming people.

Hahaha.

We have a very high population of elderly people (where I live), and not many hospitals. The ones we do have are small.
Can hardly say we are being unfair for not wanting people to spread coronavirus so that they can get their one week beach fix.

R2519 · 14/05/2020 07:58

@EffOrf. I know. Unfortunately I think some people think it will happen in July and are being very selfish trying to get a holiday this summer. Why people can't accept we are in the middle of a fucking pandemic which has killed 10's of thousands of people and potentially now caused serious inflammatory problems in children, and do without their precious holiday this summer is beyond me.

People should just stay at home and use their local amenities and attractions and accept this year life is not normal either and right it off.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/05/2020 07:59

Count Somerset in the no go zone too. People here are really angry with people in the next village coming in to walk on a different bit of grass. It’s all very pitchforks at dawn stuff.

Nothing is open anyway, hard enough to find food ourselves.

Sandybval · 14/05/2020 07:59

Not until September and even then not pubs and holiday places

I guess we will wait and see Wink
