Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

No

Oysterbabe · 14/05/2020 06:23

You don't have to pay for a couple of weeks. Wait the couple of weeks and see what's what.

IvinghoeBeacon · 14/05/2020 06:23

All the “please stay away you are not welcome” stuff - tell those who own the self catering holiday homes to refund money and then you won’t get people dithering about it. Oh the owners will then lose money? So lobby the govt to order them closed. I don’t know why locals are trying to trash the tourism by thinking up ways to make tourists feel unwelcome when the simplest thing is to encourage the owners to give people back their money and cancel themselves.

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 06:25

The hospitals here struggle enough during the summer with drunk tourists falling down the steps to the beach etc without this virus on top.

Obviously the good people of Devon would never get drunk and fall themselves?

Honestly, this thread has really changed my view about ever visiting Devon or Cornwall again. Such unwelcoming people.

Obviously if a Boscastle situation arises again, then a national appeal won't be launched, they can remain self sufficient!

GinnyStrupac · 14/05/2020 06:27

We all need to ignore Boris and stay local unfortunately.

Coffeecak3 · 14/05/2020 06:32

Fortunately for us the lady we were going to rent our cottage from has managed to get a long term tenant for this year and was very happy to cancel us and return our deposit.

It will be interesting to see the trip advisor posts for any holiday accommodation owners who don't return deposits.

Whilst I sympathise with the hardship they may be facing the people renting cannot always afford to lose a deposit, especially when they booked in good faith long before the crisis.

Coffeecak3 · 14/05/2020 06:33

The hardship the cottage owners may be facing.

Just gently pointing out that the reason why the rules on outdoor activity have been relaxed is because the virus spreads much less easily in the open air. Pubs etc. are closed. Seems to me that the only threat to the "welcoming" residents is more people in supermarkets which should be controlled as to numbers anyway.

RoseannelovesDan · 14/05/2020 06:55

If UK holidays are given the go ahead then presumably that will be because community levels of the disease are well down. If people don’t go they will lose their money. I can’t see how the shops and cafes will survive without a summer of trading, many were struggling anyway. The tax money this brings in pays for all the services locals rely on.

Scarlettpixie · 14/05/2020 07:01

Why not rearrange to next year? I kniw you have a wedding but the holiday can be paid for this year and the wedding is only a weekend or even if abroad a max of 2 weeks. Just go another time,

EffOrf · 14/05/2020 07:09

The date the government is 4th July so as you holiday is in June/July, I doubt it will be open.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll. We are also hoping to go away in our touring caravan (not Devon/Cornwall) at end of July/August and October, wondering if shower block will be open or if we will have to use the small caravan shower for the first timeSmile

EffOrf · 14/05/2020 07:12

I'm not keen to ever visit Devon or Cornwall again as it is not too welcoming there at the best of times but unfortunately DF lives in Penzance so have to go occasionally

R2519 · 14/05/2020 07:14

@efforf.
The dates the government gave are bollocks. It was all guess work to show her public there is a plan in place. Our death rate isn't falling by what they expected it too or as fast. This will cause major problems. Nothing will be open in July. Probably not August either.

Polar0pposite · 14/05/2020 07:14

God we don’t want longer queues for shops or more pressure on the few hospitals. Took me 45 mins to Q for my local supermarket last week in Devon. Nothing is open so all locals are using the same outdoor spaces which are consequently busy as a result. An influx this summer would be a nightmare. Why the urgent need this year? We’re in the middle of a pandemic can the U.K. really not do without holidays this year? In other countries people are struggling to eat pretty sure their right for a holiday isn’t high on their list of priorities.Hmm

LellyMcKelly · 14/05/2020 07:15

As long as you are alert and control the virus? 😂😂😂

I mean, stay at home, of course.

EffOrf · 14/05/2020 07:17

R2519 I was just stating that they were the earliest dates not the definition dates things were opening, it doesn't matter to us anyway as we can go whenever stuff opens up as we don't have to pay deposit.

megletthesecond · 14/05/2020 07:18

Why are people so shitty towards a vulnerable area of the country?
The South West doesn't have huge NHS resources to deal with an influx of tourists bringing the virus with them. Is it so hard to suck it up and miss a holiday. I won't see my family down there for at least a year because of this.

bambinaballerina · 14/05/2020 07:22

I wonder why people think there will another lockdown? We cannot afford another lockdown, it's not economically feasible.

As for holidays in Cornwall and Devon, they might not reopen for July, which makes me wonder what will happen to their economies, since they rely on tourism and won't received any EU funds due to Brexit (which were quite substantial, however a majority voted to leave, so I assume they have a solution ready).

Polar0pposite · 14/05/2020 07:23

Exactly a week for tourists is several months for locals. Several months of hospitals under pressure, even longer Qs for everything, outdoor spaces which are open under pressure.....

Locals still have to work and most of us don’t benefit from tourism. Why is vocalising a ridiculous idea so unreasonable?

AlwaysUtterChaos · 14/05/2020 07:24

Have you tried asking for an extension on the balance payment? They may consider it given the circumstances.
The problem will be if you don't pay the balance you'll forfeit the deposit even if the park isn't open.
We're in the same boat for a break in August.
Good luck x

EffOrf · 14/05/2020 07:27

I think you may get it back as there is no way it will be open at end of June as you are going in June not July

SpeckledyHen · 14/05/2020 07:30

Reschedule OP .
The area will need the revenue at some point in the future . Some locals will never welcome visitors, but this has always been the case , however the fact is the area needs the income .

animalmagic1984 · 14/05/2020 07:32

You wouldn't be able to go until 4 July at the earliest, so I think this is a no go I'm afrai.

EffOrf · 14/05/2020 07:33

definite

I badly need an edit button looking at my posts but I'm not pay 49 quid or whatever it is for it

Sandybval · 14/05/2020 07:41

The cynic in me says the government will push for tourist places to reopen soon to save having to financially support those whose businesses rely on it. Personally I wouldn't go, but I am intrigued by what 'you won't be welcomed' means. No banners? Or more likely, people just being arseholes.
