Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

I prefer the St Ives webcam! 😁

ToffeeYoghurt · 19/05/2020 19:12

Thank you. That's good news although a shame it had to close (if only we weren't in a pandemic!). It's important the staff and volunteers stay safe. I hope the sanctuaries aren't facing too much difficulty in more populated cities. I know there's one in Leeds. It might be harder for them. It's so important we all practice social distancing when we can for the sake of donkeys (and other animals) as much as humans.

It's lovely seeing the donkeys on the webcam. Smile

I look forward to visiting in person. When it's safe. Not before then of course.

understandmenow · 19/05/2020 20:08

@ToffeeYoghurt my mum used to have selective hearing, when she didn't want to hear something she'd become deaf!

Do you suffer with selective reading?

ToffeeYoghurt · 20/05/2020 02:19

No but I've decided on selective replying.
I can't be bothered. It's not my job. There's plenty of evidence and information out there if you want to look. Just read through some of the relevant threads on here.
Or don't believe me. That's your choice.

I'd rather think about donkeys for now.

ToffeeYoghurt · 20/05/2020 03:06

Here you go. I can't recall everything I've read over the past month but a quick google before bed shows info about hospitals that were overwhelmed with Covid patients and the mail article about London's Ambulance Service temporarily changing the hospital admittance threshold.

Thankgoodness1 · 20/05/2020 03:25

You’re not welcome in them there parts...

You’ll end up with a pot of paint on your car or worse. I wouldn’t go now anyways.

PhilCornwall1 · 20/05/2020 05:52

If what's been reported on the A30 is anything to go by, Cornwall is closed!! Shock

Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?
understandmenow · 20/05/2020 06:15

@ToffeeYoghurt PMSL at daily mail and evidence in the same sentence! Glad to see no reliable sources and therefore I'm confident it's scaremongering.

The trouble with the internet is you'll always get someone that will agree with you, so you need to find reliable sources.

DitheringBlidiot · 20/05/2020 07:46

I would pay the rest of the balance and wait until it was cancelled to get the whole amount back. I know it seems daft but generally if you cancel them you don't get the money back, but if the holiday letting cancels they should give you a full refund. It would be worth checking if that is the case first.

Our holiday to Devon was cancelled for mid June, I don't think another 2/3 weeks is going to change too much at all I'm afraid

Inkpaperstars · 20/05/2020 09:55

understandme What's funny is that you claim to be interested in evidence and scrutiny, but just based on the fact that something was mentioned in any context in the Daily Mail you are 'confident' it is scaremongering. I don't know much about the issue but even I know it was much more widely reported and discussed.

If posters know they have been careful about what information they have gleaned it's not unreasonable to mention something without a fully referenced footnote, and to not always want to be chasing links at inconvenient times. Obviously you aren't expected to believe something without evidence but if you are interested and want to be sure research has been done in a way you are happy with, you could look yourself.

Littlemissdaredevil · 20/05/2020 15:26

Devon live is tweeting that North Devon traffic wardens have run out of tickets! It’s so busy that every double yellow is covered in some places.

Fluffythefish · 20/05/2020 15:57

Not a fan of Devon Lies but they are at least correct about the level of traffic accroding to a tweet from N Devon police "Sadly every double yellow line from woolacombe to Morthoe is covered with cars and vans. Cars mounting pavements to get by whilst pedestrians try to cross the road. All the offences have been recorded and will be processed in due course."

LEELULUMPKIN · 20/05/2020 16:16

I imagine it will be like that scene in American Werewolf where he goes into the pub of locals, when the pubs do eventually open.

ToffeeYoghurt · 20/05/2020 16:20

Show me evidence for your claim that it didn't happen understandme
It was widely reported across all news channels, including if you want left wing the Guardian. Tell you what, call up London Ambulance Service. They'll confirm it to you.
Denying what happened is quite offensive to all those who suffered as a result of it. I include the undoubtedly stressed and distressed paramedics who had to implement such drastic measures.

ToffeeYoghurt · 20/05/2020 16:27

And scaremongering? It happened in the past...Confused

It could happen again. Especially if we're not allowed to talk about it for fear of being accused of 'scaremongering'. Let's hope instead that lessons have been learnt so that it won't happen again.

ITonyah · 20/05/2020 18:52

Why the fuck would people do that (park on double yellows)? What about ambulances etc trying to get by? Absolute bell ends.

understandmenow · 20/05/2020 19:01

@ToffeeYoghurt but I don't need to, it's you that's talking absolutely bollocks! Ice not made massive stupid statements, it's you!

Daily mail = daily fail = daily shit!

HTH hun!

understandmenow · 20/05/2020 19:03

@ToffeeYoghurt trying t keep up with your many posts..... scaremongering means you think that the London hospitals sending patients home to die in London, means treat the same would happen in Devon/Cornwall, even thought it didn't happen in London!

HTH Hun.

ToffeeYoghurt · 20/05/2020 19:29

Eh? So in fact you agree with me. Despite me talking 'absolute bollocks'. Since we're in agreement that must mean we're both talking shit. That's all sorted then. Good.

Like I've been saying (the same as you) just because London couldn't cope, doesn't necessarily mean other places won't. London was always going to suffer the most. Given the high density housing, huge amount of deprivation, and the UK's largest elderly population.

Having said that I think it's a bit unfair to accuse the Keep Out posters of scaremongering. Whilst the more spread out housing means less rapid spread, their fears over early easing of lockdown are understandable. Hospitals ability to cope or not, nobody wants a deadly very infectious disease.

What's a hun?
Nothing forcing you to read my 'many' posts btw. Though why ask me questions if you don't want a reply Confused

HeyBlaby · 20/05/2020 19:38

Christ, glad I almost exclusively holiday abroad.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 21/05/2020 15:56

I hope the Donkey Sanctuary is doing ok during this pandemic. Their HQ is in Devon

Don't worry, it's an extremely rich charity. The donkeys will be fine.Smile

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 21/05/2020 23:31

@ToffeeYoghurt youre talking shite.

As someone who works on the frontline, who has colleagues both nurses & medics on the frontline the criteria for hospital admission has categorically not been raised .

Not only do i work on the frontline amongst it all but my own mum was admitted with Covid right in the middle of the peak.

Unfortunately i have way too way knowledge of what is happening and its not what you are spouting .

ToffeeYoghurt · 22/05/2020 18:35

It's not currently raised but it was. This is not denied by the London Ambulance Service. During the worse most overwhelmed point it was temporarily raised. Check with them if you don't believe me.

It only happened in London, I believe. It might've also have happened in the West Midlands? I only know about London but perhaps somebody else can say whether it happened anywhere else.

Daffodil101 · 22/05/2020 20:34

Didn’t happen in our city (north)

BubblesBuddy · 23/05/2020 08:30

The nhs didn’t take some Covid patients from residential homes that’s for sure. That’s why so many died in them!
