To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

Day trippers are going to be bringing the Virus to our small towns and villages
So of course we do not want visitors.
where are you all going to pee and poo?
Toilets are closed.

You are all being selfish and Johnson is a twat for saying you acn travel where you want.

Thepilotlightsgoneout · 12/05/2020 19:09

Of course you should go but if it’s busy and you don’t feel social distancing is happening, then you should come away.

Everytimeref · 12/05/2020 19:10

So Robert Goodwill (Conservative MP) is saying Whitby is closed to visitor, maybe he should tell his boss, he isn't happen with the latest guidelines.

Livelovebehappy · 12/05/2020 19:10

YANBU, but you will need to have your hard hat on when you go as I’m sure the locals will be out in full force to tell you what a horrible person you are. Depends whether confrontation bothers you - if it doesn’t, then go for it.

LemonPudding · 12/05/2020 19:10

How are we bringing the virus? I've been nowhere for 2 months so certainly not infectious. Even if I was I wouldn't be going up to people and breathing in their faces.

We'll be heading for a Welsh beach the day they are open again.

Biscuit0110

It's OUR MP saying that we are not open for visitors!

Posting again, as apparently some people are incapable of RTFT.

Yellredder · 12/05/2020 19:11

Totally selfish.

ElsieMc · 12/05/2020 19:12

Thirtyrock39 - good point there. I live in Cumbria near the Lakes. The Assistant Chief Constable is regularly on local tv trying to stop people coming into the Lakes. He cites the high level of coronavirus related deaths per head of population and signs are still up saying the Lakes are Closed. Our nearest larger town supposedly has the highest rate of coronavirus in the whole country and yes, it's Cumbria folks.
Good luck to him this coming weekend then.

A village down the road to us had a sign up until a few days ago saying "Residents Only" and a farmer had blocked off a road where tourists/walkers had parked on the roadside to visit a beauty spot. He had used hay bales.

EwwSprouts · 12/05/2020 19:12

You can't park anywhere as the carparks are closed, as are shops & public toilets. If you go just for a couple of hours to walk on the beach and can cross your legs I think it's reasonable but I wouldn't go for a walk round the town and expecting to find a hot drink.

MissDollyMix · 12/05/2020 19:12

I agree it’s legal and yanbu wanting to visit. A lot of residents dislike tourists at the best of times, the current situation has just put petrol on the fire. Fwiw I live about 45 minutes from the coast. In pre-covid days I would usually drive out about once a week, just to walk the dog on the beach and to blow the cobwebs from my head. I desperately miss not being able to go, however, for the time being I’m still not going to visit. I just want to see how the next few weeks pan out. I’m not personally worried about catching the virus but if 1000s descend on the coast in the next week or so all hell will probably break loose. I also hate crowds anyway. I like to go to the beach to get away from people (again, nothing to do with coronavirus, just an anti-social moo!) and if there were loads of people there it would spoil it for me.

justonecottonpickingminute · 12/05/2020 19:12

Everytimeref I would be amazed if Goodwill is the only Tory MP who realises his boss is an utter buffoon and is having to run around doing damage limitation.

LemonyCupcake · 12/05/2020 19:12

@LemonPudding hi Grin

TheGreatWave · 12/05/2020 19:13

tears now this may totally blow your mind, but I know Whitby and I know the parking. I also know the parking at my nearest stretch of coast. I know how long it takes me to get there and also how long it takes me to get to Whitby.

I can do an hour trip all in, and therefore no need to use a toilet.

There may be just the slightest possibility that I also live in the vicinity. Who'd have thought.

LemonPudding · 12/05/2020 19:14

@LemonyCupcake

PilatesPeach · 12/05/2020 19:14

Where will you spend a penny? Aren't all public loos closed? That would be a big factor for me too!

ScubaSteven · 12/05/2020 19:14

@LemonyCupcake it's not allowed though - you can travel for exercise, Whitby would not usually be used for exercise by the OP?

And the parking attendants are furloughed I imagine, they're not needed in Whitby because the police have had to be a bigger presence due to the cast amounts of people still insisting on travelling there and wandering around. The local's don't own the beach as some posters on here are complaining about - but they do have a right to be safe and there is no way that Whitby wouldn't be at an increased risk of infection if everyone did what the OP was planning to do.

Lock down is still in place, the longer people carry on thinking it's not then the worse outcome we will have. It really isn't that difficult to understand.

Thesearmsofmine · 12/05/2020 19:14

YABU just wait a while longer to visit.

I love that area and visit often, we had a holiday booked there last month which had to be cancelled, I would love to go to the coast but I think it is selfish to local people who need to be able to get out themselves and it isn’t the easiest place to social distance.

user1493494961 · 12/05/2020 19:15

With public toilets being closed, people will be peeing and pooing in the open air.

ShellsandSand · 12/05/2020 19:15

I'm from Bridlington. Have lived in Wakefield district for last 5 years due to work. I am longing to see my friends and family in Brid but I just can't bring myself to go there yet. The towns people love tourists and rely heavily on them to keep the towns economy thriving but it is their home before it's a holiday destination. The people of Brid are worried sick about the influx of visitors right now and our Mayor put out a video announcement regarding the town being closed ie. 'Shops, public toilets' ect. I know its difficult OP but I would try to hold out.

Everytimeref · 12/05/2020 19:16

No @justonecottonpickingminute. Think there are several in Cornwall, Devon and the Lakes who aren't impressed but when you have a populist for Leader what did they really expect.

Devlesko · 12/05/2020 19:16

YANBU there's no law against you going and you aren't risking anyone's health.

Twigletfairy · 12/05/2020 19:16

I wouldn't go tomorrow. Anywhere remotely scenic is most likely to be packed tomorrow. I would personally wait a while longer to visit.

I live a 15 min drive from a beach. Its not a sandy beach or impressive in any way but it can still get pretty busy. I normally take my children there a couple of times to walk our dog. We haven't gone since lockdown and I was thinking about going tomorrow but I've decided against it. When lockdown first happened people swarmed there and I think it will be the same tomorrow. We will wait and see what happens and find out from others how busy it gets. Maybe we will go next week either early morning or evening when there will be less people around

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 19:17

Not really worried about the toilet. When I go up Scaffell Pike there is no toilet up there and that takes nearly the whole day. More worried about my car getting keyed or something to be honest

OP posts:
missmouse101 · 12/05/2020 19:17

We're still in the midst of a global pandemic. We are still meant to stay at home as much as possible and act with common sense. Day trips to the beach are really not what you should be doing.
