To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

MarieQueenofScots that was a very threatening post, and you will find yourself arrested for criminal damage.

Op take no notice, the lockdown has really got to some people. Jesus. Next they will have their broomsticks out!

Ginnymweasley · 12/05/2020 19:29

I live in a seaside town I didnt travel to a city to strip supermarkets we have our own shops..... I don't know anyone that does that tbh. We have plenty of shops in the local town. I probably go to the nearest city ( 1 hour away) about 3 times a year.
I live in north wales we have had people driving up from London to walk snowdon. Lots of people from the wirral being stopped. I just don't understand as there are plenty of lovely places a lot closer to them.

What on Earth was threatening about not condoning criminal damage Grin

Thefaceofboe · 12/05/2020 19:30

Just don’t be so selfish and think of the locals who have to put up with this shit. My parents live in Whitby and I wouldn’t dream of travelling to see them yet.

CaptainBrickbeard · 12/05/2020 19:31

I love Whitby and would like nothing more than to be on the beach; I especially enjoy moody grey British seasides in poor weather so I feel desperate to go. But it would just be a stressful visit at the moment - knowing that residents are afraid, nothing being open, not being able to get a coffee or use a toilet or buy fudge - it would just be a sad experience and not worthwhile for anyone. I also wouldn’t be too sure about parking inspectors being furloughed either. Lockdown restrictions are taking their toll but even with the loosening of them, we can’t just do our normal activities straight away - it won’t be the same abc would probably feel worse than not going at all.

All of those are the selfish reasons not to go - the fact that it won’t be enjoyable. It’s also so unfair and unethical to descend upon tourist spots right now where the local hospitals won’t be able to cope of high rates of infection get imported by visitors.

ohlookthisisjustdaftnow · 12/05/2020 19:31

The public toilets will probably be closed, and with cafes shut you might have a slight issue there. I wouldn't - not for a while.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 12/05/2020 19:31

Why do locals think they own the beaches etc in the UK??

@LemonyCupcake

I think if you could teleport into the beach from your house they probably wouldn't mind, but if you are going to have to park in residential street, compete with locals for space in shops, crowd public spaces where locals are trying to walk from their house to the shop etc then they are entitled to wish their weren't visitors.

1forsorrow · 12/05/2020 19:33

We have plenty of shops in the local town. I probably go to the nearest city ( 1 hour away) about 3 times a year. You realise that other people might behave differently to you? Where I live many people travel to the nearest city 5 days a week to work and when our shops ran out of stuff they were going to the big superstores in the city.

Biscuit0110 · 12/05/2020 19:33

Bring a picnic and use service station loos, they are all open.

MH1111 · 12/05/2020 19:34

Absolutely go! Use your liberty and don’t listen to forum stasi or self centred locals.

Have a lovely day!

Clymene · 12/05/2020 19:34

Where are you planning to wee?

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 12/05/2020 19:34

I live in a seaside town, our local council is closing the local parks and seafront from tomorrow because they're concerned about an influx of tourists and it would be impossible to socially distance, the masses won't act responsibly and because of that we now can't use our local open spaces.

1forsorrow · 12/05/2020 19:35

Why do locals think they own the beaches etc in the UK?? I have no idea but as someone paying high water rates because the rest of the UK don't think they have any responsibility for clearing the beaches up I would welcome you visiting and paying your share. Got the shock of my life when we moved here and discovered we were going to be paying more than double for our water.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 12/05/2020 19:36

God - do people REALLY say peeing and pooing in real life? Why can't you say I am going to the loo or the bathroom? It is horrid.

Thefaceofboe · 12/05/2020 19:36

as I imagine it will be busy at the weekend due to everyone being off work

Most likely forcing locals to stay indoors to avoid the flocks of tourists, deep joy for them Confused

Thefaceofboe · 12/05/2020 19:37

Bring a picnic and use service station loos you do know where Whitby is, right?

justonecottonpickingminute · 12/05/2020 19:37

"Use your liberty "

One person's right to freedom ends where another person's begins. Weigh up the following, please:

  1. Person A's right to have a stroll on a beach miles from where you live...
  2. Person B's right not to have a very infectious virus brought to the area where they live, where there is no hospital with an ICU, and the population is largely elderly.

People chat shit about freedom.

ScubaSteven · 12/05/2020 19:38

I think it's more a case of the tourists thinking they own the place - parking outside the locals' properties, using their facilities, crowding up the streets that the locals have no choice but to use if they need to leave, calling the locals 'riff-raff'.

Exercise is permitted, days out are not.

Snaga · 12/05/2020 19:38

If you're a selfish fuckwit go ahead. Who gives a shit about locals with poor access to the medical infrastructure and limited deliveriesbased on population size of consumable goods.

If you have a decent bone in your body, wait until they partially re-open the tourist places so you can at least contribute to the local economy in exchange for your potential in bringing a serious virus to their area.

It's not hard to work out how to be a decent person but many either seem to struggle with it or in sheer boredom come on MN to be goady fuckers.

NameChange7383 · 12/05/2020 19:38

Struggle with everyone who lives on a beach / at a natural beauty spot saying they don’t want visitors. Of course you do. Tourism probably plays a massive part in your local economy. What you are saying is “we’d rather not have you right now, as everyone is feeling nervous” coupled with the fact that any visitors right now won’t be contributing financially. You shouldn’t bite the hands that feed though, seems to be an unnecessary amount of hostility from some posters. Clearly OP is being considerate or she wouldn’t have asked the question (she’d have just turned up!)

NameChange7383 · 12/05/2020 19:39

It’s almost like those locals are being forced to live there.

TinRoofRusty · 12/05/2020 19:40

What's unreasonable is asking on MN, where anything besides staying locked up in your house for the foreseeable future is met with hue and cry, 'so selfish!' 'I'm NEVER seeing my family again, it's too risk!' 'You'll NEVER go abroad again, EVER!'

Just go.

Ginnymweasley · 12/05/2020 19:40

Loads of tourist places have shut carparks. This has led to people that have chosen to ignore rules just parking on the street. Hardly fair on the locals is it? I live in Wales so this shouldn't be a problem yet but sadly it will be as people have still being travelling g here even before the rules were relaxed in England.

scarbados · 12/05/2020 19:41

No public toilets open. Cafes and restaurants closed except for pre-booked deliveries for which you need an address. Car parks closed.

Visitors packing the streets mean residents in some areas can't even get out of their houses - if you know Whitby as well as you claim to, you already know this.

Stay away for another few weeks, please.

Thefaceofboe · 12/05/2020 19:41

Tourism probably plays a massive part in your local economy

Nothing is open? A few fish and chip shops serving and delivering to locals
