Why do curried baked beans exist when they are so vile?

Why why why? I know they've been around forever but this is the first night I've had them darken my kitchen. I like beans, I like baked beans, I like curry, I like beans in curry...but wtf is up with curried baked beans. I couldn't even get past the horrific smell to try them. I'm usually a "get on and eat it" kind of person but honestly why do they exist? What do you even eat them with? They need to go, surely?! Aibu to, at the very least, ban them from the house forevermore? I swear I can still smell them.

Shut your blaspheming mouth, they are DELICIOUS.

Justmuddlingalong · 11/05/2020 19:38

Drunken student days food of the gods.

june2007 · 11/05/2020 19:40

Well because other people like them. Good camping food. (Blazing sandles just sprung to mind.)

Fandoozle1 · 11/05/2020 19:42

I've never tried the tinned ones BUT I make Indian style beans at home... sautee some onion, cumin seeds, salt and garham masala, and some turmeric, and a green chilli, then add a tin of baked beans and a dash of water and let it simmer for a few minutes, they are yummy.

Whycurrybeanswhy · 11/05/2020 19:47

Home made ones sound delicious @fandoozle1 These just smelt so bad. Like uncooked out curry powder... Hideous!

Fandoozle1 · 11/05/2020 19:49

I may give the tin a try to see how bad they are! Grin

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/05/2020 19:53

I've bought a few packs of Heinz Creationz - there's Spanish, Mexican and a lentil curry. I've not tried them yet - but your post is beginning to make me think there's a reason that they always seem to be a special offer on them.

x2boys · 11/05/2020 20:06

Because some people like them ,I mean why do supermarkets sell butter beans ,I can't imagine why anyone woul d want to.eat them but someone must 🤔

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/05/2020 20:09

Oh god butter beans are so mealy and really disgusting.
Id rather eat tinned curried beans and I dont like those either.

Whycurrybeanswhy · 11/05/2020 20:17

The Heinz Mexican beans are nice. I don't hate the idea of curry beans just actual curry beans are nasty (I assume)!

OP you need to rephrase your question:

"why do BAKED BEANS exist when they are so vile"?

Whycurrybeanswhy · 11/05/2020 20:19

Butter beans are almost a swear word from my childhood. My mum hates them so much - consequently I've never had those either.

YABVVVU. Curried beans are wonderful.

They used to be even more wonderful when they had raisins in, goodness knows why they don't any more.

Ordinary baked beans on the other hand are rank.

mrsBtheparker · 11/05/2020 20:34

Maybe because we're not all alike! I could ask why gin, vodka and all other spirits exist!
Butter beans are great in mashed potato, I even skin them if I'm feeling pious.

CatsCatsCats11 · 11/05/2020 20:36

DH and DC love them, they smell like BO Envy

Quarantimespringclean · 11/05/2020 20:38

All tinned baked beans are horrible. In fact most beans are. I dislike butter beans, kidney beans, cannelini etc etc. But I love lentils and chickpeas.

Rubychard · 11/05/2020 20:45

Mmmm curried beans. Haven't had them (or even seen them) in years. Now do we have any curry powder in the house? I could make my own.....

TrickyD · 11/05/2020 20:51

I haven’t seen them for years either, Rubychard. I thought they must have been discontinued but obviously not as other posters can still get hold of the delicious little blighters.

Whycurrybeanswhy · 11/05/2020 20:56

@mrsBtheparker I get your point but everything you mention seems drinkable/edible. I don't like mash particularly but I'll eat it. I'd probably eat it if it had butter beans in it, but curried beans just smell so vile I can't imagine them getting near my mouth. Out of curiosity - how long does it take to peel beans?

Feedingthebirds1 · 11/05/2020 21:07

Oooh I haven't had a curried bean in years! I wonder what they'd be like with cheese on top?

justjuggling · 11/05/2020 22:12

Curried beans are delicious! Especially on a jacket potato with loads of grated mature cheddar on top!

Mrsbclinton · 11/05/2020 22:33

I love curried beans with sausages & mash 😋

ZaZathecat · 11/05/2020 22:41

I'd forgotten they existed. Want some now!

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 11/05/2020 22:55

YABU.
I've never tried curried baked beans and wasn't aware of their existence before this thread.
Now I neeeeeed to try them Grin
They sound awesome.

duggeedoesmyheadin · 11/05/2020 23:10

@Fandoozle1 Totally agree. Home made curried baked beans on buttery toast is just lush.

In addition to your ingredients I put a tiny bit of armchoor (dried mango powder) in there too.

It was one of my fav dishes growing up. And now I'm 33 weeks pregnant it's literally all I want to eat.

I bought the tinned curried ones by accident once, they were so mank I couldn't eat them.
