To think Bovril is the most underrated drink

I'm trying to lose a few pounds of lockdown baking weight. Doing it by intermittent fasting, which usually works well for me. I'm a bit anaemic too, and read that Bovril is good for that, so I thought I'd give it a try. Exhumed an old jar from the back of the cupboard (I sometimes put a bit in casseroles)

Well oh my goodness, fasting is a doddle with a mug or two of Bovril on the go. Completely kills my otherwise insane sugar cravings, plus hunger pangs. It's also weirdly satisfying, for essentially being beefy water, and very comforting after a long windy walk. Honestly, I've seen the light. My dad used to drink when I was a kid and I thought it was yuck and never even tried it. Honestly this is the answer to all my weight loss prayers. I have a feeling there may be a catch and it may involve a whacking great salt content, but I don't care Grin

Nothing beats drinking a steaming mug of Bovril at the beach after an afternoon's surfing. The chicken version was my fave. Happy memories!

Bovril is one of the few things I really miss as a vegetarian.

KittenVsBox · 11/05/2020 15:55

It's not going to help with the weight loss, but spread butter on hot toast, and then put bovril on top (like it was marmite).

OscarWildesCat · 11/05/2020 15:59

Oh yum, I'd forgotten about bovril, used to live the stuff!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/05/2020 16:01

Do you drink it in the fasting part of the day?

thequeenbeyondthewall · 11/05/2020 16:03

I like bovril too when I'm trying to lose weight quickly. Sometimes I have a cup of tea straight after with a sweetener and it makes me feel like I've had a dessert.

Have you tried that Yorkshire malted milk tea? It's really nice.

abigailsnan · 11/05/2020 16:04

I always reach for the Bovril when I need to loose a few pounds

Bovril and Bouillon 👌👌👌

snowybean · 11/05/2020 16:20

(Not together. In separate mugs, please.)

MaggieFS · 11/05/2020 16:22

Only ever have it when feeling under the weather, but love it.
Have it on toast regularly.

Pipandmum · 11/05/2020 16:26

@KittenVsBox yes yes yes bovril on buttery toast features regularly in our home. And on cream crackers. I've never actually had it as a drink. Gosh I may just be driven to have some now!

mrsbyers · 11/05/2020 16:36

The cubes are the best , I need a high salt diet and carry cubes everywhere even abroad on holiday.

One of my favourites is a hot and sour bovril , made with a lot of white pepper and vinegar - beautiful

SerenDippitty · 11/05/2020 16:36

Bovril on buttery crumpets. Yum. I once bought Morrisons own Beefy Drink, thought it was delicious and was set to change brand permanently, then I compared the ingredients and found Morrison’s has sugar in it.

GladAllOver · 11/05/2020 16:41

You need to watch your blood pressure if you're having lots of salty drinks.

sluj · 11/05/2020 16:41

I drink this on cold days in my office in the Home Counties. My Southern colleagues are horrified and think I am drinking gravy.
When I were a kid up North, my Dad used to make us a cup of Bovril with a big chunk of cheddar on the side when it was really cold. He used to melt a knob of butter in his Bovril too.
Its a proper drink for the football terraces Grin

My eyes are playing tricks on me. I thought your title was To think Boris is the most underrated drunk.

Fleetheart · 11/05/2020 16:45

Couldn’t agree more about bovril on buttered toast. One of my favourites. Never tried the drink though - maybe it’s time!

Millicent10 · 11/05/2020 16:49

I also absolutely love bovril on toast, it does keep hunger at bay provided it is on decent wholegrain bread (although of course the best taste is on white bread).

HaddawayAndShite · 11/05/2020 16:49

A hot bovril at a cold rugby match is perfect.

Bipbopbee · 11/05/2020 16:50

Agreed... Bovril is amazing!

amy85 · 11/05/2020 17:15

I don't get it and am one of those who thinks it's like your drinking gravy lol

SerenDippitty · 11/05/2020 17:20

I remember Bovril flavour crisps - delicious. A relative of mine used to drink Oxo - now that is weird.

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 11/05/2020 19:43

The Yorkshire biscuit tea, oh my God.

I do drink it when I'm fasting for the PP who asked! Only 10 calories a mug Grin

Bovril on toast, bovril sandwiches. Yum! Not so keen on the drinks but we always have it on toast

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 11/05/2020 19:48

Long ago my neighbours used to make Bovril and chives sandwiches for lunch. The chives were cut straight from the garden and the bread was white with loads of butter. Heavenly.
