To ask if your DC had weird shaped heads?

My DD is 5 months on the 19th, she has always had a big head, from being in the womb it was off the chat so 100 percentile, ever since stayed at her own curve of around 90th percentile.

But, it just looks odd! At the back its all lumpy, not round, and she has a slight flat bit right on the top of her head at the side and now ive noticed her ears arent aligned properly.

My HV said when she was 8 weeks! They wanted to keep an eye but when i went to weigh in lcinic and mentioned it they said tbey wont check til she is 12 months again unless concern, which i explained she said that and they weren't fussed.

Anyones babies not had perfectly round shaped heads?

Ive attached a picture of the flat bit im on about and can't get a good pic of the back! It doesnt seem severe as what ive seen online and looks slightly normal but slightly not also compared to what id seen about the things that need helmets.

Definitely not flat on back of head and gets plenty of tummy time and stands up lots.

Both DN had/have once they have hair it's not as obvious and they grow into them tbh.

Tjsmumma · 10/05/2020 16:45

Heres some of the back but not overly clear! As you can see its quite big! But she is 18lbs which is 95th percentile and 64cms around 75th percentile so quite a big girl

@RandomMess thanks i thought the same, if she had dark hair it wouldn't be si obvious! She has very fair hair, we call her baldilocks lol

A nephew of mine was born with a big head that was/is slightly odd shaped.

He's fine and his hair now hides his head shape.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 10/05/2020 16:47

That looks exactly like my ds's head. He is 6 now and it is still that shape, but it's only really obvious just after a haircut. His paediatrician noticed it at his last check up (he has asd) but didn't seem concerned

Oysterbabe · 10/05/2020 16:49

DS has a giant head. It was 98th centile at birth and at all subsequent measurements. He's 2 now and it's the same circumference as his 4 year old sister's. It seems to stick out quite far at the back.

Tjsmumma · 10/05/2020 16:54

@YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake thank you for your reply! Assuming he didnt need a helmet or a scan? Been reading bits n pieces online (probably shouldnt!) and said it could be water under skull or need a helmet 😬

@Oysterbabe yes she's always been big on the charts since birth! Had our 8 week check and HV was shocked then realised she had a big head st birth (also measured it wrong!) so wasnt too concerned.

This is like my DS2's head, he's just three and he and his brother (two years older) have always been able to share a two-pack if hats because his head is so massive! It's the same shape as your DDs too. Unfortunately he is still quite baldy but if he had hair you'd never know.

Funnily enough when he was born he had to see a consultant before they let us go home because his head was 'too soft' or something. It ended up fine but I've always wondered about that.

My BIL is a paediatrician and says his head is totally fine, I've asked him enough times so now I believe him!

Tjsmumma · 10/05/2020 17:08

@MarylandMayhem i did assume it looks more odd as she is so fair haired!

@mistermagpie oh wow! Bless! That's wjat i thought, she has some hair but its so fair and fine! No one mentioned anything, only my HV then we had a follow ip at hospital for something different and they did her HC then and didn't mention a thing about it so assumed it was all ok! Haha that's good to hear though, think im just worrying as you can see it a bit more and her ears are lined up like it says they should be

Yes mine did. He was ventouse delivery and had 2 boobd on the back of his head! The other had a flat head. I am pleased to report they both now have very normal head shapes.

Thecazelets · 10/05/2020 17:14

If she's meeting her developmental milestones I wouldn't worry. One of mine had a very large and misshapen head and I had extra scans because it was considered a bit concerning in utero. As a baby it was almost wedge shaped (I think partly due to back sleeping) so looked very odd until his hair grew in properly. He's now adult but has always been absolutely fine and is a very high flier academically. His head is still big but so is the rest of him (98th centile + throughout) so he grew into it.

Ragwort · 10/05/2020 17:23

I really don’t want to scare you (& I don’t think your baby’s head looks particularly different) but my DS was born with an odd shaped head due to a cranio synostosis problem. It is a very rare condition but was fortunately noticed by a medic. It resulted in specialist hospital care and major surgery on his skull - this was many years ago and all turned out to be fine. It was a ‘cosmetic’ issue, no concerns at all about development.
If you are worried, seek medical advice, but I stress that my DS’s head looked nothing like your DD’s.
(PM me if you want any more info).

Tjsmumma · 10/05/2020 17:27

@Thecazelets Thank you! She is meeting all milestones and more for her age so definitely not concerned in that aspect. She alwaus, measured up huge in womb and never had anyone mention at thing about it, we had about 6 extra scans due to mw being higher risk. She's in 6-9 clothes and is generally just a massive baby so like you say its not like she's 10th percentile on other things!

@ragwort no thank you! Not scaring me, this is why i wanted to see experience from other parents! She didnt have a weird shaped at birth, literally just a big one. Was 35 cm and she was 39 weeks. Glad it all turned out to be okay for your DS! I may take you up on that if i figure out how to lol!

Dd2's head is a really odd shape, kind of like a hexagon from above. It worries me but a few pediatricians have felt it and said its not craniosynostosis as the plates still move. I suspect it's probably what my head looks like beneath my hair but I've never seen my head from above with no hair so don't know. I can't wait for her hair to grow and hide the funny head shape! Poor little thing! She's teeny though as well so at least her small little narrow head fits with her little frame Grin I'm 5'10 so god knows where this little dot came from!

Millicent10 · 10/05/2020 18:16

One of mine has a big head, the same shape as the picture. He is at High School now and hasn’t had any problems/comments. The bones in his head were really late to fuse he still had the soft spot at his 1 year check. The dr said, yes it is big and very curved but it within the normal range. I have noticed that this head shape seems more common in some African countries, I always notice it with the bald long distance runners.

AllieAct · 10/05/2020 21:16

One of my children has a big head that’s a bit funny shaped - it was measuring large all through my pregnancy and is well off the chart now. People don’t believe me when I tell them now - it’s completely unnoticeable (he’s 5).

He had an MRI a couple of years ago (he had a seizure and that combined with the big head was a red flag) and was diagnosed with benign macromesia.

Basically - harmless big head Grin

Ragwort · 10/05/2020 21:18

I have sent you a personal message OP.

Tjsmumma · 10/05/2020 22:34

@Thecaravan Yes she has it on one side mainly! As, far as i can tell the soft spot/plates are moving its definitely gotten smaller in the past weeks but, we haven't seen a doc/nurse since she was 8 weeks and had her jabs (now 20wks)due to me being high risk and them saying jabs can wait til after all this is over. I bet!! I wish she had darker hair as i probably wouldn't of noticed or worried about it being funny shaped just big! But she is generally just massive all over, strange how different they can be! Thank you :)

@Millicent10 did they noticre the size of his head prior to the 12 month check? Only our HV mentioned it but wasnt too concerned considering how big it was at birth. Ill probably get a check up as soon as i feel its safe to go! Thank you

@AllieAct Nice to hear someone else had a similar experience in pregnancy! She was off the chart at one point which obviously concerned me! Couldn't find a single thing about it and no one mentioned it. I guess some just have bigger heads, percentile charts are for that reason! Sorry to hear DS had a seizure, but, hope it all resolved and he is okay now! Also good to hear it wasnt anything to worry about in your case! Ill get her a check up when i feel its safe to go for myself and her, thank you ☺️

@ragwort thank you! I replied ☺️
