Open the garden centres and stay alert

Excellent. I can go to a garden centre and stay alert, in case a massive man-eating plant gobbles me up mid-purchase.

Seriously. In advance of the revised message this evening, WTF does this actually translate as to most people?

OP posts:
Utterlydespairing · 10/05/2020 13:33

I despair of the public today if they honestly don’t know what this means.

Beamur · 10/05/2020 13:36

I think it is ripe for interpretation. Which means different people will think it means different things things.

KKSlider · 10/05/2020 13:36

To me this message translates as a huge increase in infection numbers two weeks from now swiftly followed a further lockdown.

KKSlider · 10/05/2020 13:37

Lockdown does need to be eased but gradually in a measured way, and with clear steps.

This message is so vague, open to interpretation, and is - IMO - too much, too soon.

yellowbrickwhorl · 10/05/2020 13:39

I'm sure they'll tell us all about it later on Watch with Boris.

WhoWants2Know · 10/05/2020 13:40

So the 30,000+ people who have died, was that because they weren't alert?

Pukkatea · 10/05/2020 13:40

You can 'despair' but the fact is a lot of people are not clear on what it means, which means it is bad communication. The problem is that this government got into power by using vague slogans that everyone could take to mean whatever they wanted, and they haven't broken the habit.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/05/2020 13:42

But we haven’t been told everything yet

Terribly vague. Quick poll amongst my family members and got a different interpretation from each of them. So that doesn't bode well for the general public.

I agree with PP, I think this is a way to start another wave of infections before blaming us all for too much contact and locking down again over summer. All while letting people think they are in control.

Manipulation at its finest if it's intentional.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/05/2020 13:46

What time is Boris's announcement today?

KKSlider · 10/05/2020 13:46

It's going to be an utter shit show.

Widowodiw · 10/05/2020 13:47

7pm

Nachonacho · 10/05/2020 13:48

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal 7pm

TitsalinaBumSquash · 10/05/2020 13:48

Ok I'll fess up, I don't know what 'Stay Alert' means in terms of this?

You can't see the virus,
You can catch it without knowing for 2 weeks,
Some people carry it without symptoms.

So please explain to me, how we can all 'be alert' to save lives?

ineedaholidaynow · 10/05/2020 13:50

But if more people are going to go back to work and possibly school, they can’t keep the slogan Stay Home.

PotteringAlong · 10/05/2020 13:52

I despair of the public today if they honestly don’t know what this means.

Well I don’t know what it means. I assume that we don’t have to stay at home anymore and we’re going back to being vigilant about hand washing etc

ineedaholidaynow · 10/05/2020 13:58

Boris is going to announce the next steps this evening, why aren’t people getting this

KKSlider · 10/05/2020 14:01

He's already published what they will be, tonight's address at 7pm is pre-recorded.

KKSlider · 10/05/2020 14:02

This is what has been published

Open the garden centres and stay alert
NotaFreeloader · 10/05/2020 14:02

Opening garden centres and relaxing rules even slightly will increase the spread of the virus and it’ll pick up again quickly. Nothing has changed in terms of a vaccination or effective treatment so this will keep happening again and again.
It’s very worrying

TheCanterburyWhales · 10/05/2020 14:02

I suppose it means the same as it does in the other 14 threads asking what it means.

Pika09 · 10/05/2020 14:05

It means, "We're not going to give you any straight forward directions, as when we get the second wave, we can blame you, the public (even though it is us that have cocked it all up)." Signed Boris.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/05/2020 14:06

Thank you!

Ladylimpet · 10/05/2020 14:08

It's purposely vague, open to interpretation as has been said. Just so bojo can't be blamed further along down the track. Matt Hancock will probably be thrown under the bus after all this.
