Sauna Etiquette

To think that in a small gym sauna it is not ok to:

  • have loud mobile phone conversations (surely the heat would damage the phone anyway, why even bring it in?)
  • wear sweaty gym clothes that smell awful due to the heat
  • leave washed gym clothes to dry in the sauna when you're not there (that still smell of sweat as only rinsed through under the tap)

All of these are common in the gym I belong to. Thoughts please!

And I would leave the rinsed gym kit in a puddle of water outside the door.

OK thanks all. I doubt I'll return to that gym but some very strange people there!

The OP is reasonable in the things objected to.

I'm used to saunas abroad and the idea of swimwear in one is unpleasant I find. Towels can be wrapped around you.

@LadyRenoir
Yes I gathered after the event it was pretty common...suppose it was being ill prepared for it. Actually we were fairly good friends as we had met a few times over the years so just to go in without warning was a slight shock. They didn't have an sort of social embarrassment about looked as suppose they were just used to it. I did feel a little exposed at first, especially as I had been the the beauticians and been well groomed for the weekend so felt a little exposed!

But actually it was a nice experience DH and I laugh about

None of that is acceptable behaviour. Fortunately the gym I used to go to had a mixed sauna so any member of staff could check it. It didn't stop people putting oils in the steam machine in the steam room though, which clogged it up and broke it repeatedly. It only stopped when they caught someone doing it and banned them.

I'd change gyms - a place where someone threatens to hit you is not somewhere you'd find relaxing at the best of times!
