People who aren’t quite getting it...

I wouldn’t comment IRL and am not part of the Stasi post on FB with “reported to police” written in capitals which I am quietly finding quite amusing.

But a few people are posting are posting stuff on SM with “and before you judge me XYZ”

Friend who posted last weekend “having a bonfire this afternoon so just letting all my neighbours on here no so you can shut your windows” erm - you aren’t supposed to be having bonfires because of the risk of added pressure on the emergency services if something goes wrong, everyone is cooped up inside and it’s foul and some of those people might be shielding because of impaired lung capacity.

Photos of children on a bouncy castle in the back yard, “before you judge me there was no contact and the guy cleaned it all” yes but the point is it’s not exactly an essential fucking journey is it?!

And the people moaning about traffic on the roads - erm you were there too but your reason is “justified” because you are a key worker? “The park/beach was so crowded” so I came home - BUT YOU WERE THERE TOO!!!!

Our neighbours have had family around yesterday and today having a BBQ... can't understand their mentality. So if they don't 'think' they've got it, or even if they've had a test and they're negative, doesn't mean to say they won't catch if tomorrow or next day, or day after that and then spread it around their family. Just f...ing idiots.

wishfull888 · 09/05/2020 19:01

60+ maybe 70 , buying a single bar of dairy milk and wine tonight in co-op. Definitely not getting it ! At least buy bloody 3 of each so you're not shopping AGAIN tomorrow !!!

MillennialPink · 09/05/2020 19:04

I am at the point now where I really don't care what other people do as long as they stay the fuck away from me. If people want to ignore all the advice and go ahead and catch the virus and die, then they are, frankly, too stupid to care about and the planet would be better off without them. I do worry about any NHS staff they may infect though.

Whatsupdaddio · 09/05/2020 19:11

To me there are two things happening: 1. people don't realise that the risk is not of them getting it, it's of them transporting it, or infecting others (the vulnerable or at risk) while they are asymptomatic.and 2. A general lack of common sense (the bonfire issue) and selfishness abounds. At this point it seems like everyone it's for themselves and I am staying in! Some drunken chap going for beers in the cooler at the Tesco express grabbed my hand to steady himself. There are stupid selfish people out there and seemingly nothing we can do about it, except go the other side of the street when you see them coming.

SpokeTooSoon · 09/05/2020 19:31

I don’t see how I’m transporting it if I’m not going anywhere.

The studies all seem to say the same: that sustained, indoor contact with an infected person is what does it. Within homes and workplaces and public transport. Not passing within 2m of someone outdoors.

ClaraSais · 09/05/2020 20:04

Neighbours opposite had a massive bonfire which got out of control.

Easilyanxious · 09/05/2020 21:54

@ midnighstar it was still just one example that I used I clearly used the if you cannot work from home at the beginning of my post , your Just picking it apart for the sake of it .

urkidding · 10/05/2020 06:56

There is nothing as annoying as coming home from work after a full day and looking forward to having a drink in the garden, and then having to go in because the bonfire produced by the people who have been home all day ' enjoying' the garden decide to have a bonfire or barbecue.

urkidding · 10/05/2020 07:00

I saw a post on an Amazon mask website, where someone asked whether they were affective at stopping the virus, and one of the buyers said the person he has bought it was dead, so could not be asked!

Ethelfleda · 10/05/2020 07:32

Millenial I’m starting to feel the same. But I keep thinking, if everyone carries on and does what they damn well please then we will never come out of lockdown Sad

IvinghoeBeacon · 10/05/2020 08:13

“ if everyone carries on and does what they damn well please then we will never come out of lockdown”

You know this is both nonsense and illogical, don’t you?

Ethelfleda · 10/05/2020 08:14

You know this is both nonsense and illogical, don’t you?

Ok, then I invite you to (without patronising me, if possible) explain why that is.
Genuinely interested to know your opinion.

IvinghoeBeacon · 10/05/2020 08:41

If everyone “ carries on and does what they damn well please” (I assume you mean socialises and does not distance) then we aren’t in lockdown. The whole thing relies on compliance and so far most people have complied, regardless of what some people are seeing outside their front door and extrapolating to the rest of the country.

We won’t remain in lockdown forever if people do not comply - firstly the economy couldn’t take it and also it’s not part of the govt strategy. This isn’t a punishment for being naughty like some kind of whole-class detention, it’s the government’s strategy for avoiding all the severe coronavirus cases hitting the hospitals all at once. They will ease restrictions within the next few weeks because there isn’t much other option. There will always be a second peak, it is a natural consequence of lockdown strategy. However it’s really handy for the govt that people are prepared to blame each other for the restrictions and for the lack of plan in lifting them, rather than scrutinising the govt’s decisions

Sorry if this makes you feel patronised, I’ve done my best not to, but if you do then there isn’t a lot I can do about it

Ethelfleda · 10/05/2020 08:54

Ivinghoe
You didn’t patronise - that was clearly written showing a degree of respect so thank you.

And I do agree with you for the most part. You raise some good points here. Honestly, this lockdown has tensions and anxiety running high so it’s no wonder some of us are reacting by looking for others to blame. But I do recognise that this isn’t the most rational way to process what is going on!

I suppose it is more convenient to place blame on people that you can actually see ‘flouting rules’ but I do take your point that the government’s decisions should be scrutinised along side everything else.

BirdieFriendReturns · 10/05/2020 10:32

The economy won’t bounce back, I imagine the OP, being a social worker, will be very busy soon.

BiddyV · 10/05/2020 11:12

It's really scary how little sense some people have. It is even more scary that it in turn impacts us all.

MadamBee, I hope that you and your family are safe and well.

FelicisNox · 10/05/2020 22:48

For the millionth time: people will do what they want. Ignore them, stay away from them and let them get on with it.

When they post on Facebook that they have Covid with a sad face emoji just point out it's from that time they went to the beach/hired a bouncy castle etc.

They are selfish. You know this, they know it blah blah.

ToffeeYoghurt · 11/05/2020 00:36

I agree with you BiddyV

It seems like us Brits really are different from the rest of the world. Not magic immunity that many, including our government, seemed to think we had at the beginning of this pandemic. But we clearly differ from the rest of the world in lacking common sense (and morals).

Dismissing large sections of society as expendable - anyone over 50, people with health conditions, overweight people, BAME communities, doctors and nurses and other frontline staff. All these people dying disproportionately. All dismissed as expendable by the 'We have to get on with things' crew. Who don't quite seem to realise what the rest of the world has. That these people may not matter to you but they make up quite a large proportion of the economy.

The services and businesses and transport that we depend on. There's no normality when all these people, those who keep the economy running, are off sick or dead.

Nowhere else in the world thinks pretending the deadly infectious virus has gone away means it really has gone away.

Well done to the unions for stating they plan to stand up for workers rights to safe working environments. Good luck to them.
