Day one of potty training ...

Ds is 2.6 and had been showing interest in potty for a while now .
I’ve gone for the method of completely bare bottom , t shirt on, and watching him like a hawk with the potty close by, so far 2 accidents and refusal of wanting to go on the potty.

Am I being unreasonable leaving him with nothing on his bottom half at all? What have you done , or what would you do ?

We’re potty training too. He’s wearing pants and trousers. Washing load has gone up, but it could be worse.

He’s been good about it so far, but we don’t always make it on time.

My DD had pants on and the potty in the same room. First day puddles and wet pants, second day a trail of wee to the potty. Third day she got it.

My DS however... Took a long time. He wasn't ready for ages.

So in my limited experience I'd give it a few days and if you are not getting anywhere go back to nappies for a bit.

Good luck!

I really worried with my son he wasn't getting it, he was still in pull-ups at nursery etc. But he did get it in the end, and all the worrying and washing wasn't really worth it.

My nephew was still in pull ups at 4 and my sister was really worried. He just decided he wanted pants one day and that was that.

I'm sure your son will be fine with it, but if it doesn't stick this time don't stress is what I'm trying to say!

We're over a week in to potty training now. Some days have been much better than others but overall it hasn't been as much of a disaster as I assumed it would be!

We kept a small stash of pants and wipes in the living room near the potty just in case. He has, by and large, sussed it out and is happy to get to the potty before he leaks but on occasion he will dribble ever so slightly before rushing to the potty. But as he's been wearing pants it's not been too messy, just straight into the washing machine if he does dribble and plenty of spares on standby.

We've been asking him wether he needs a wee or a poo every half hour or so just in case he is too absorbed in playing with his toys to remember to go and this has also worked well. I will admit, we also have a bag of chocolate buttons hidden away so if he does a poo on the potty he gets 2, 1 for a wee etc. Not everyone's cup of tea, I know.

He's still in nappies overnight as I firmly believe he isn't ready for overnight dryness just yet - he's 2y 2m so on the younger side.

Good luck Smile

We left DS in pants and trousers but it was winter. We had a little pair of steps for the toilet and went on that as not much further than a potty would be. First couple of days there was more washing and then it was OK.

Edwardbear1 · 08/05/2020 08:35

Day 1 and 2 no pants or trousers
If they are using potty ok
Day 3 /4 loose trousers shorts no pants
Day 5 pants / loose trousers
Stickers! All the sticker rewards

That's how I potty trained my boys. When we went out, pants (obviously) went on. I think they have to get use to knowing where it comes from and what to do with it. So, it's much easier to let them run about clothes free lol..
Took my boys a few days to get the hang of it, then they were off!
Good luck

Make him have pants on then they get in to the habit of having to pull them down, even try nappy pants if you want. If he doesnt show signs of getting it after a day or two try again in 3 months and so on. One day they will just get it and its so easy, if it's hard work they are not ready.
