WTF is happening in Georgia? Have you seen this? I don’t even know what to say! We learnt about Jim Crow, and Emmett Till and others in school... just how are people still so vile and racist? How is the justice system in Georgia so fucked up? Do you ever just see these news items and think WHAT is wrong in America? Here too, but wtf America (Georgia). I can’t begin to understand how his family must feel

Justice denied since February. His attorney has posted the evidence and I can’t bring myself to show it here. Poor innocent man

I've been to the US twice since 2000 and loved it both times, however I don't think I will ever go again.

The US has been exposed as the racist, misogynistic, money worshipping, gun loving, backwards country that it really is. They have never deserved their self appointed place as leader of the free world and they are slipping right down to the bottom of the pile.

My only disclaimer to this is that there are many, many Americans who are as appalled by their own country and it's leadership as the rest of us. It must be unbearable for them and they have my sympathy.

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/05/2020 10:44

That was murder, plain and simple. I’m glad that they have finally charged the shooters with murder.

The gun crime in the US is very prevalent. People get shot and killed all the time. Police brutality is off the charts too.

I still remember Justine Damond, an Australian woman who called 911 to report another woman being assaulted. She approached the police car when they arrived clearly unarmed and one of the police officers shot and killed her.

Screen industry has been considering/implementing boycotts in Georgia since their brutal anti-abortion bills.

WTF goes down down there?

C130 · 08/05/2020 11:59

Words fail me. That incidents like this keep happening. America and their dismal gun culture, and racism have a lot to answer for.

superstressy · 08/05/2020 12:29

So fucking surreal, I want to laugh thinking it's a joke.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 08/05/2020 12:52

I saw The Twilight Zone episode about the policeman and the young black man, and it really brought this situation home for me.

YANBU. The poor man and his family.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 08/05/2020 12:55

America seems to be going backward in terms of racism.

But just America. The U.K. is going backwards too.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 08/05/2020 12:56

not just America- that should say.

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/05/2020 17:13

Chandler, good point.
I agree it is not just America. I often think that whenever someone raises the issue of racism in U.K. or France or where-ever, there is always a deflection where someone says at least it’s not as bad as the US. Ok, yes but just because US is off the charts bad it does not excuse racism elsewhere or lets us think it’s not a problem outside the US.

On one thread people were talking about how much better the U.K. is compared to China in treatment of black people. I commented, really? Then how do you explain your Windrush scandal?

Someone actually responded saying “they weren’t African though, they were Jamaicans”. I wanted to write back...and how do you think black people got to Jamaica in the first place? They were taken there on British slave ships. At least the Africans in China got there as free people. People are quick to be outraged by racism and hate crimes in other countries but seem almost wilfully blind to it within their own country.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 08/05/2020 17:18

There is so much wilful ignorance surrounding the UKs/GBs own history and current treatment of ethnic minorities. Every time I am seeing a conversation it’s always “well, yes, but...” followed by minimisation or deflection.

C130 · 08/05/2020 17:37

I read a book a few years ago by Beryl Gilroy, who was the first black Headteacher in London. Racism has not just magically disappeared. It is just more covert.

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/05/2020 17:37

Exactly Chandler. Good to know someone else sees it too :)

Notmyrealname855 · 08/05/2020 17:42

It’s hellish that’s it’s not just the vile, racist, violent crime.... it’s the racists in the “system” that have intentionally prevented justice. The DA’s office, the local police... why didn’t the Governor know or care? They’ve delayed for so long and assumed this would go away. Absolutely terrifying. I saw someone online say this and it’s true - this isn’t a news story, as much as a huge exposé on the corruption in Georgia. The “system” didn’t care when they saw the tape, they only bothered when WE saw it and people made a fuss. What the hell America!!!

Absolutely agree racism prevalent everywhere, including here - the more people know it, the more they can check themselves for insidious racist tendencies. At the VERY LEAST everyone should be fighting this case and looking at the rotten system in Georgia. How many nutcases are out there in America like this? I mean across the whole system. It’s easy to think racists look like the murderers, but they can also look “respectable” and be just as cancerous
