Banksy- a bit meh really?

AIBU - but isn’t it really all a bit mediocre now (not that it was ever anything else)?

OP posts:
Bootikin · 06/05/2020 22:13

Yep. Go look at Van Dyck. That’s actual art. The banksy thing is tedious, low rent gimmickry graphic design, set up to appeal to lowest common denominator. (Apologies to any graphic designers doing a sterling job).

yellowbluebell · 06/05/2020 22:17

I agree, not my cup of tea but people love him

PersonaNonGarter · 06/05/2020 22:22

I really like him. But ‘NHS as Good Guys‘A is not exactly challenging the discourse, is it?

Smarshian · 06/05/2020 22:23

I love Phlegm - just a bit more thought provoking.

Lougle · 06/05/2020 22:30

I loved it. Simple and really well done.

Randomness12 · 06/05/2020 22:35

I loved it too, for me it’s a nod to the new normal. Our children should understand the nhs and respect them rather than furling multi billion pound merchandising campaigns.

Randomness12 · 06/05/2020 22:35

*fueling

TillysMum02 · 06/05/2020 22:36

i agree....its a bit overrated

recrudescence · 06/05/2020 22:37

Banksy is a vandal. He should be brought before the courts.

kazillionaire · 06/05/2020 22:38

I love a bit of Banksy 🥰

RickOShay · 06/05/2020 22:39

I like him. I thought the mice in the bathroom was so good. He’s talented. And definitely not a vandal.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 06/05/2020 22:42

I feel meh about the subject but he has talent . In my opinion.
If nothing else its an excellent drawing/painting.

bakedbeanzontoast · 06/05/2020 22:43

I liked the mice but he's overrated IMO.

RickOShay · 06/05/2020 22:43

Rats actually

Banksy- a bit meh really?
Cressless · 06/05/2020 22:45

His work is incredibly banal.

kazillionaire · 06/05/2020 22:49

Dismaland was amazing, the whole concept and presentation made people actually stop and think, not many artists achieve this in modern times

donquixotedelamancha · 06/05/2020 22:50

‘NHS as Good Guys‘A is not exactly challenging the discourse, is it?

I just watched the BBC news explain in great detail what his picture of a kid playing with a nurse superhero toy meant. It tickled me they think we are all thick.

I quite like him, but only because I think he's doing exactly the same con job as almost all conceptual and contemporary art- just in a more obvious way.

managedmis · 06/05/2020 22:50

I'd say

TheNationalToastBoard · 06/05/2020 22:51

So I'm the lowest common denominator for liking Banksy, and other similar kinds of artists?

Nice one, PP.

The only issue I see with it is that many of my nhs and carer friends are finding it hard being compared to heroes because of the pressure it puts on them.

MayDayHelp · 06/05/2020 22:55

Banksy is ace, so YABU. Dismaland and its execution was genius. I went three times.

donquixotedelamancha · 06/05/2020 22:55

So I'm the lowest common denominator for liking Banksy, and other similar kinds of artists?

Shakespeare was lowest common denominator stuff in his day. Nothing wrong with art which is accessible and popular.

RickOShay · 06/05/2020 22:56

Who do you like @Cressless

PianoTuner567 · 06/05/2020 23:00

I like Banksy because his art has a sense of humour

StarShapedWindow · 06/05/2020 23:09

It’s not ‘meh’ - it’s just not for you. Art is subjective - some people hate Rothko and others think he’s a genius. You shouldn’t be judging people on their artistic preferences.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 06/05/2020 23:09

I saw his pic earlier, thought it was lovely.
Bit meh?
Banal?
I'd like to see you lot's effort Grin

Banksy is a vandal. He should be brought before the courts.
Nothing like the "Wayne woz ere" or whatever crap we get in the usual subway/alleyways.
I know what I'd much rather see, that mural was great and I definitely wouldn't see it as vandalism if it was round here.
