To ask how much you are spending on food during lockdown

Not really an aibu but posting here for traffic.

How much are you spending on food during lockdown? Family of four here! Have an online shop coming tomorrow and I’ve spent £120. Could probably spend more if it wasn’t for the 80 item limit. Before lockdown was probably spending £80-90.

I spent around £80 on a large shop just over a week ago but found it wasn’t nearly enough food to last until this shop so had to top up!

I could try and get it down but we got to eat. The kids are eating everything, my partner needs to take food to work as well as meals, snacks, toiletries etc.

Please tell me I’m not the only one?

Also has anyone noticed Tesco prices going up recently? I’m a regular Tesco shopper. Only have a large Tesco or Morrison’s in the area and nearly always use Tesco!

Thinking of changing to shopping at Asda when this is all over!

I do agree tesco is getting expensive, I compared my Aldi bill ( only cat and I), £17 difference!
Tho £8 of that was cat food, for 6 to 8 weeks, included, choc, flowers and smoked salmon too, few things bug difference, like for like frozen fruit.
Mone is about the same on average £50 max

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 06/05/2020 22:45

About £100 a week, but that doesn't include long-life things like washing powder, loo roll, pasta etc. Thank you brexit stash 😁

It's a lot (we usually spend about £75 a week), but I'm not spending any money anywhere else, so saving overall.

Getting a bit annoyed at the lack of multipacks that I'd usually buy that would save me money though, and very glad I gradually stockpiled last year

mamaduckbone · 06/05/2020 22:46

Loads more than usual on our weekly shop (maybe average of £120) but we're buying treats, alcohol, toiletries and a whole weeks worth of meals including lunches for 4 of us. I'd usually spend about £100 a month on school lunches for the kids, we'd eat out a couple of times and top up with bits and pieces during the week, so we're actually spending less but it seems like loads because it's all in one go from one shop.

reluctantbrit · 06/05/2020 22:47

I think overall we pay less but the grocery shopping bill has increased,

We save the £30/week I use for lunch and snacks at work plus £25 DD spends per week at school. Also DH normally had ready meals while now we all have sandwiches for lunch. We also save on coffees when waiting for DD having lessons and classes in the afternoon or weekend.

Saying that I would love to go out for coffee and cake again or a drink in the pub. We do takeaway to support local restaurants but I just don’t enjoy it as i would when going out.

Despite baking twice a week I think I actually lost weight, I think I just ate too much crap at work.

Shitfuckoh · 06/05/2020 22:47

@Bonkers do you mind if I ask what is in your meat hamper? Also, do you order it online or is it via a local butcher? Thank you!

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 06/05/2020 22:48

£235 / week for 2 adults & 5 chickens... I've only noticed how much we spend since doing larger weekly shops, rather than lots of little trips

Shitfuckoh · 06/05/2020 22:50

@MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 I'm sorry, I really need to ask. Is that chickens or children? Grin

Historyofeverything1 · 06/05/2020 22:53

About £20 more than normal. 1 adult, 1 teen, 2 dc.
A combination of no offers and restricted brand choice.

Inextremis · 06/05/2020 22:54

This week's Tesco shop comes in at around €120 - that's for 2 adults, 2 dogs and a cat. I just looked through the order, and there's not a lot in the way of main ingredients in there - 2 x 2 duck breast fillets, 2 x pork belly slices is about it. There's a lot of nibbly cheese, and some chocolate, savoury snacks for DH, fresh fruit for me, and some vermouth (for cooking) which is a one-off and not something I often buy. Also dog and cat treats, and store cupboard packet sauces and similar.

I'll probably place a fish order for delivery next week - another €50 but it goes in the freezer and lasts a couple of weeks, and phone the local butchers with a meat order too - another €30, but again that freezes and lasts a while.

So, that's €200, plus occasional top ups of milk and bread, and it covers more than a week. Don't think that's more than we were spending before lockdown, tbh.

Megatron · 06/05/2020 22:56

£160 on Friday plus a £25 veg box. Bread and cheese is delivered with the milk. We're spending a bloody fortune.

Sgtmajormummy · 06/05/2020 22:59

About £5 per person per day. All inclusive and eating well.

The adults have cut out breakfast and are doing 16/8 intermittent fasting for lockdown so we’re using less milk, marmalade etc. But snacks and pop have been added by DS who’s with us from university.

Things do seem a little more expensive, like fresh fruit and meat, but nothing outrageous.

TheMamaYo · 06/05/2020 23:01

About £85 - £100 a week. 1 adult, 2 teens and 3 pets. There are almost no of the usual offers on at the moment, which is a bit frustrating.

itmusthavebeencoffee · 06/05/2020 23:12

Anywhere between £150 – £200 every week at Sainsburys between 4 of us.. horrendous and I don't even know where it's going but it's my fault as I am the one doing the shopping.

bumblingbovine49 · 06/05/2020 23:16

£130-£140 every 7-10 days or so when we can get a Tesco online delivery so about £550 a month
Weekly veg and fruit box £20 a week
Egg delivery £6.50 a.month for eggs
Gousto or hello fresh box (one of each on alternate weeks ) £25 a week

So about £750 pm for two adults and one teenager . No takeaways at all

However last month when we couldn't get many supermarket deliveries we spent a fortune on other sorts of one off local food delivery so the bill was nearer £900 to £1,000 l

Examples of.this were
Wholesaler delivery of lots.of basics including pasta, flour, eggs, milk, potatos, juice, sauces, cereal, rice etc. Sounds a lot but we are still using the shelf stuff almost a month later

A very large delivery of veg, dairy, bread, fruit, juice and more flour from a local community shop.to tide us over one very long gap between supermarket deliveries

Until.a.couple of weeks ago we were ordering both hello fresh and gusto in a week and ordering 4 meals per box instead of 3.

We had also added a loaf of soda bread to the weekly veg box which was an eye watering £4 a loaf which we have stopped now as Tesco deliveries are more available and I have quite a bit of bread flour again to.make the odd loaf towards the end of a week when the Tesco bread runs out .

So quite a lot but not as much as a few weeks ago. We did also have quite a large Brexit stock which has gone down but we.are now replacing some of it as we use it so it is not going down as much.

We haven't however been inside a supermarket to shop since lockdown began and have had plenty to.eat

Gemma2019 · 06/05/2020 23:17

So much money it's depressing, plus it would be more if it wasn't for the 80 item limit at Tesco.

The planning, shopping, thinking about meals and constant cooking is the bain of my life at the moment.

Nogoodusername · 06/05/2020 23:19

£250-300 for 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 cats
Up from about £180 a week - 4 of us eating 3 meals a day and snacks here now, so the increase is understandable but still a lot!!

Whattodo121 · 06/05/2020 23:25

Around £120 a week at Tesco or Asda and then probably around another £30 a week on top up at M and S to tide us over. No eating out though so we are doing better than usual overall. Also haven’t put petrol in the car for 6 weeks...

Wincher · 06/05/2020 23:27

I'm spending about £200 per week for 2 adults and 2 kids. Plenty of booze. Plus a Friday takeaway. But actually it's not that much more than I would normally spend, usually £160-£180, and normally the kids would have school dinners, DH and I would buy lunch and/or breakfast out several days per week, plus coffees/beers out of the house - everything we consume now comes into that weekly spend so it's not too bad considering.

Thegreymethod · 06/05/2020 23:27

Loads!!! Hearing loads of people saying they've been saving so much money during lockdown and I think how!! We're spending more! Apart from the kids being home so seem to be spending more on electric, our lives haven't changed that much (apart from obviously not seeing friends and family!) husband still working and we don't really eat out much or go on shopping sprees very often...... but we're eating nice food and getting the occasional take away so not complaining, food seems to be our only joy!!

Fairylillie · 06/05/2020 23:30

£100 a week, two adults and two under five. We're spending more than usual as we're shopping at a closer supermarket, ASDA instead of Aldi and quite often only branded items are available. Today I could only get branded eggs, branded bread and branded snacks for the kids. Also there are less offers and some prices have gone up.

Adoptthisdogornot · 06/05/2020 23:36

2 adults, 3 young kids, no booze. £240 a fortnight (Aldi), no top up shops.

camillatopaz · 06/05/2020 23:38

We're currently averaging about £60 weekly purely for food for 2 adults and a 2-year-old. Our shopping is all together more when including bits of toiletries, cleaning supplies and cat food and litter but we don't need those every single week so it's variable.
We do need to go for milk and bread top-ups mid-week but that's only about another £3.
Pre-covid we'd spend around £50/wk but go on to order takeaway a couple of nights, hit a drive-through at a weekend, go for coffee after work then end up choosing a restaurant/pub meal etc. so we're ultimately spending much less. Also wasting less as the unplanned takeaways/fast food/pub meals aren't a factor so we're using our fresh fruit, veg, meat, etc as it should be. It's really made me embarrassed about how much we'd waste, both in terms of food and money, and I'm adamant that we're going to make a real conscious effort not to slip back into that old cycle when some form of normality resumes.

Yelllow · 06/05/2020 23:39

£200-£250/week. Family of 5. It's too much!!! But it also includes booze and household items like TP, shampoo, dishwasher tablets, etc. We have had 2 takeaways since this all started so I think overall we are saving money but still.. that's a lot. And I'm getting fat too which isn't good.

Hedgehog44 · 06/05/2020 23:40

£150 for 3 of us. Mainly wine!

fodderbeet · 06/05/2020 23:41

It's lot more than usual, the same as most people, but I'm not paying for school dinners, ds1 isn't eating at a friends twice a week, we're all here for every meal instead of buying packed lunch stuff and meals out and grabbing a sandwich when running late.
