To ask how much you are spending on food during lockdown

Not really an aibu but posting here for traffic.

How much are you spending on food during lockdown? Family of four here! Have an online shop coming tomorrow and I’ve spent £120. Could probably spend more if it wasn’t for the 80 item limit. Before lockdown was probably spending £80-90.

I spent around £80 on a large shop just over a week ago but found it wasn’t nearly enough food to last until this shop so had to top up!

I could try and get it down but we got to eat. The kids are eating everything, my partner needs to take food to work as well as meals, snacks, toiletries etc.

Please tell me I’m not the only one?

Also has anyone noticed Tesco prices going up recently? I’m a regular Tesco shopper. Only have a large Tesco or Morrison’s in the area and nearly always use Tesco!

Thinking of changing to shopping at Asda when this is all over!

I am spending about the same as before - £85 a week, two adults. That includes a couple of bottles of wine. Before I would shop about 3 x a week, but now just once.

LizzieSiddal · 06/05/2020 22:10

Scarf £30,000 a month, you must eat a lot!

spongedog · 06/05/2020 22:12

A lot more. Why? I am shopping for my mum and she insists on paying me back but somehow the pfaff of sorting through the joint bill is just too much (so thats my fault), no offers so everything grocery is full price, I am wfh so need to eat at home; trying to support local which is a lot more expensive; DC around and hungry (teenagers) and the alcohol bill has gone up.

But other costs have gone down. I do wonder what new normal will look like. I really like the idea of supporting local shops - they have been brilliant in my local community but 2 loaves, milk, some veg, perhaps a piece of cake was over £12.

CD41 · 06/05/2020 22:12

Thanks all. I spent £80 on a big shop about 9 days ago. Bought a top up maybe around £50-60 at the weekend and now this shop tomorrow. You would think we have loads of food but we don’t! 😟

4 adults, includes all toiletries and cleaning stuff.

3 meals a day - at least £250 pw. Usually £180 to £200 if they are all at home!

RosesandIris · 06/05/2020 22:14

Far too much is all I’m saying...

chillandrelax · 06/05/2020 22:15

Far too much! Snacks for the boys and alcohol for me and DH! But we are still spending less overall.

JimandWilson · 06/05/2020 22:16

Family of 5, (plus 4 pets)

4 meals (Supper now part of lockdown life as kids are up til late!) 3 snacks, unlimited fruit. Alcohol for us.

It's between £40-60 every couple of days. It's extortionate and the meal planning has gone out of the window. But, meals are all we are living for right now. Kids are burning so many calories running around the garden, trampolining, making obstacles to climb and jump...can't feed them any less.

We aren't spending anything on fuel, coffees, lunches out etc so sure it all balances out!

Aryaneedle · 06/05/2020 22:18

We are spending more because the prices in all stores have gone up.

LizzieSiddal · 06/05/2020 22:20

Yes prices have definitely gone up and there aren’t many offers. In their defence the supermarkets costs have gone up so you can’t blame them.

Louiselouie0890 · 06/05/2020 22:20

So much it's a joke. I think everywhere is more expensive what was a £40 shop is not costing me £70

Aryaneedle · 06/05/2020 22:20

I blame Brexit Grin

WeveGottaGetTherouxThis · 06/05/2020 22:21

Shit loads! 2 adults, 2 kids & 2 cats. It’s close to £200 a week, but I am also buying bits for my elderly grandparents. We don’t drink, but we do eat a lot of meat & fish which is expensive.

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 06/05/2020 22:22

Our food bill has almost doubled, like others we are savings in other areas but it’s a bit worry tbh. I definitely think prices have increased and I’ve also found as lots of items are unavailable we’re having to substitute for more expensive alternatives. Also we’ve ordered some top up shops from local suppliers (milk and bread etc) which is always more expensive, this won’t be sustainable for us in the longer term.

PhoneLock · 06/05/2020 22:22

Pretty much the same as before lockdown.

Racheyg · 06/05/2020 22:23

About £120 a week maybe more for 2 adults 2 kids.

I am buying dh beer and the odd wine but other then that it's all mainly fruit and veg. Dh is a veggie and kids only eat chicken so don't spend lots on meat.

Lovelydovey · 06/05/2020 22:23

Two adults, two children (who eat more than me) - about £150 a week.

Waitingforadulthood · 06/05/2020 22:24

Fortunes. Our £60 weekly shop is now hitting £130.

Four of us. Forced to shop local (which is better but more expensive, no offers etc) and the dc who used to have breakfast club and free dinners have those meals at home. I didn't used to eat in the day, but when I don't now the dc notice, so I have to. We now bake more, and not to mention the snacks! Constant snacks!

And the fact that food is all we have really to look forward to. The only concrete thing. Dinner on Sunday will definitely be delicious, a full Sunday lunch with meat and sides (I'm basically putting Christmas dinner up every week) plus pudding and we all look forward to it. In a way that looking forward to seeing family sometime , maybe, don't know when is one thing, and looking forward to food ON SUNDAY is another- more real and has no melancholy in it.

it all costs. A lot. Thank god the council pay me in place of the free school meals , otherwise we'd be eating beans on toast and pearl barley stew exclusively. Our lives would be so much more awful.

MamaGothel · 06/05/2020 22:24

2 adults, 2 small children and a cat. Our bill has doubled from £60pw to around £120. No alcohol which keeps it down a bit, DP doesnt really care for it and I'm pregnant. Really feeling the lack of offers at the supermarket

nobodyimportant · 06/05/2020 22:24

Lots more than normal! TBF4/5 of us normally get lunch outside the house so that's an extra 20 meals a day to buy. Also, the cheaper alternatives I normally buy are not always currently available. Add a bit of nice stuff because let's face it, there's got to be some joy in life right now. The shopping bill has gone right up!

EnoughAlready2020 · 06/05/2020 22:26

We're spending way too much and I genuinely don't understand why 😭😭. Two adults and one teenage boy and I reckon £1k a month if I include stock up online orders and store visits. I keep reviewing my basket and trying to remove stuff but then I add other things back in!

Runbitchrun · 06/05/2020 22:29

I’m easily spending £100 a week right now for 1 adult and 2 children. Normally closer to £60. However, there’s no dinner money expenditure and my alcohol consumption has increased.

Iloveacurry · 06/05/2020 22:35

Pick up a Tesco shop today, was £130. We’re 2 adults and 2 kids. Usually shop in Aldi and spend £90-£100 weekly. So

pourmeanotherglass · 06/05/2020 22:36

About £130-£140 for 2 adults 2 teens. More than before because no meals out etc. Includes a couple of beers and some toiletries/ cleaning stuff.

Boulshired · 06/05/2020 22:39

I have started doing my shop at night to get the reduced. I was quite shocked at the increase and determined to reduce it. Shopping for 5 all adults and teenagers. £180 to £200 last few weeks and this week back down to £120.
