Obscure quiz questions (lighthearted)

I was having a chat with a friend over the weekend (by phone ofc) and we were discussing the questions he had prepared for a Zoom quiz - all male participants, mid-50's.

I vetoed a few of his questions as they required a bit of very specific technical knowledge you could only know if you had good reason to by way of your job or hobbies. Then a question comes up about a US comedy series called Brooklyn 99, and I immediately said it was too obscure and I'd never heard of it. He insisted on putting it in, and told me today that every participant also said they'd never heard of it.

He keeps insisting it isn't obscure as both he, a close relative and a friend of theirs had heard of it. AIBU to tell him that as not only had I not heard of it (let alone the slightly geeky related question) but as none of the 7 quiz participants had either, it IS obscure.

TLDR:
Brooklyn 99 IS obscure - YANBU
Brooklyn 99 is well known and a perfectly valid series to include in a general knowledge quiz - YABU

I think it's fairly well known to people who watch netflix a lot.

Appuskidu · 06/05/2020 19:28

My kids have all watched it, but I doubt anyone at work would have.

ApocalypseNowt · 06/05/2020 19:30

Brooklyn 99 is a pretty big show to be fair. Definitely not 'obscure'!

It's won Emmys and Golden Globes and has run for 6 + seasons I think.

YABU!

Allergictoironing · 06/05/2020 19:30

Bear in mind we are talking about professionals in their mid-50's, and at the risk of being outing the question was related to a band the star of the series used to play in!

I've heard of it and watched a couple of episodes but really don't enjoy it so I wouldn't be able to answer a quiz question on it and would be very surprised to find one in a quiz. It's not well-known enough, surely? It's hardly like Friends or Only Fools and Horses over here. In fact, I know lots of my older-than-me friends have never even seen Friends or Big Bang Theory so would almost definitely struggle with Brooklyn 99

iklboo · 06/05/2020 19:34

Yep. That's an obscure question. Very niche.

papiermaches · 06/05/2020 19:35

Well, I love it but I live with a yank and we watch a lot of US based stuff

Sparklfairy · 06/05/2020 19:35

Brooklyn 99 has sort of a cult following. You either know it and have seen every episode multiple times or you have never heard of it iyswim.

It's very funny and easy to watch, and yes, all over Netflix. It was cancelled and there was so much uproar among fans that Netflix brought it over to them so it could continue I believe.

OgoPogo8 · 06/05/2020 19:35

I'd say it's one of the most prominent comedies of the last decade.

And the question is about The Lonely Island.

Doggodogington · 06/05/2020 19:37

We love it here. Not obscure. Then if you asked a question on Eastenders or Corrie, I wouldn’t know anything on them.
Or football. Im in a zoom quiz group with a bunch of 30 year old men and the football questions are ridiculous.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/05/2020 19:39

I've heard of it. Wouldn't be able to answer questions on it. Most TV programmes would be the same though. A general question like 'what war was MASH set in' or 'which TV series featured the Trotter brothers' or 'what series was Meghan Markle in' are about my level of TB knowledge

mollypuss1 · 06/05/2020 20:33

The Lonely Island are pretty famous in their own right and have collaborated with many very famous people. I do, however, think they are bigger in America because of Saturday Night Live and Andy Samberg than they are in the UK.

They are definitely an acquired taste and I doubt many British men In their 50s (or people on Mumsnet) would enjoy their style of music.

Saying that, my husband is 49 and he loves Brooklyn 99 and knows who The Lonely Island are.

pussycatinboots · 06/05/2020 20:39

Not a clue who he/his band etc are.
Your boss is a bit of an arse if he's asking questions about a netflix only program - not everyone subscribes..

DieSchottin93 · 06/05/2020 20:45

My dad is in his 70s and is a fan of Brooklyn 99 Grin I have heard of it but only half watched a couple of episodes.

AnneKipanki · 06/05/2020 20:48

I watched part of an episode. Could not watch any mire.
Good typo!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 06/05/2020 20:50

Boom boom Bill!

I like it. It’s turn your brain off and laugh tv. Plus I love Terry Crews. The man can do no wrong in my eyes (disclaimer unless he’s had some hideously shady past I’m not aware of blending puppies for protein shakes or something).

Pinkywoo · 06/05/2020 20:50

It's on E4 a million times a day so definitely not a Netflix only programme, and also not obscure.

Floofboopsnootandbork · 06/05/2020 20:55

netflix only program

It’s not a netflix only program Hmm it’s on Netflix yes but it’s not their show and it’s on pretty much all afternoon every day on E4

BobbinThreadbare123 · 06/05/2020 20:58

Nine nine!!

Amummyatlast · 06/05/2020 21:05

How can Brooklyn 99 be classed as obscure? E4 is is go to evening channel in our household.

(While I type this I’m watching a recorded episode of The Goldbergs.)

Jbck · 06/05/2020 21:21

Noice!

BikeRunSki · 06/05/2020 21:26

It’s not obscure. I hardly watch any TV and I have heard of it. DH (professional, mid 40s) watches it from time to time.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 06/05/2020 21:31

To be fair I have seen it quite a bit and like quizzes but I have no idea what band anyone from it was in.
A general question about the programme for example who plays ‘jake’ would be fair enough.

bridgetreilly · 06/05/2020 21:34

I don't think it's obscure in that I'd expect people to have heard of it, but I wouldn't expect people to know details about it.
