Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

Could you not have just asked them to stand back a bit? Is that the real reason you're so het up, because you bottled it? Grin

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 06/05/2020 14:44

All over 70s have not been advised to shield. They're just in the more vulnerable category along with pregnant women and people with asthma etc.
People who have been told to shield are people with very serious health conditions.

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 06/05/2020 14:46

I'll stick to not giving a flying what anyone chooses to put in their baskets

Exactly this. Who gives a shit what anyone else is buying in the shops.

user200000000 · 06/05/2020 14:47

I'm so so bored of the bloody shopping police and ageism on MN.

Deux · 06/05/2020 14:49

Don’t be silly Amelie. The government themselves have said we’ve all done lock down so well that people are now terrified of coming out of it.

Anyone who wants to continue kneeling on sharp stones, doing without, well crack on.

ghostyslovesheets · 06/05/2020 14:51

maybe they couldn't get an online delivery because 'moi' had taken a slot?

Maybe they just wanted to go and buy cheese

maybe they where 69?

Stop policing the world and worry about yourself - if you get an online shop why where you at the supermarket for example?

it's daft - as for distancing just put your trolly behind you and move forward away from them

emmathedilemma · 06/05/2020 14:51

Age aside, I think there's a lot of people just "popping to the shops" for a couple of items, you can tell by the size of the bags they're coming out with, or even carrying the few items in their hand.

Moondust001 · 06/05/2020 14:52

*Their age is clearly relevant as over 70s have been advised to shield as they are a higher risk category, for those who seem to have failed to notice that!

And I agree, some people clearly just done get it. Darwinism.*

You did see the word advised in your sentence? Advice, as in it's suggested you do something. It isn't compulsory and just because someone reaches the age of 70 does not give you are anyone else to treat them like children. There are plenty of 70+ people who are fitter and smarter than some 40 year olds. If survival of the fittest applied based on MumsNet prejudices, half the population would be dead by now.

Littlemissdaredevil · 06/05/2020 14:52

Over 70’s are in the vunerable category not the extremely vunerable category who have been advised to shield. The vunerable category can go out but have been strongly advised to minimise contact with others.

Maybe the are both 69 with no pre-existing medical conditions

ilovesooty · 06/05/2020 14:53

The OP said that moi wasn't using online shopping.

saraclara · 06/05/2020 14:54

No they haven't, @familyof4boys. When will people stop spouting rules that don't exist? Seriously, MN posters are terrible for this.

Alsohuman · 06/05/2020 14:55

Over 70s haven’t been advised to shield. HTH.

Coronabored · 06/05/2020 14:55

Oh dear. I bought 2 kinder eggs on our 1 walk a day earlier. What must people think of me.

Xmasbaby11 · 06/05/2020 14:55

I do get what you mean and we have tried to avoid popping out for a couple of items, trying to wait til we need more. That way there is longer between visits. We are not vulnerable or shielding. However, sometimes you can't get everything in one place. I really need flour .. or want it anyway .. and feel like I can't justify going out just for that.

burnoutbabe · 06/05/2020 14:57

surely it means we all have to queue longer if people go in every day for 1-2 items,

I mean if you need milk, then get milk but also buy some other stuff so you don't also need to queue up tomorrow for say bread etc.

queuing outside shops to get in is no fun, particulalry when the weather turns nasty

saraclara · 06/05/2020 14:58

I do a big shop weekly. But I ran out of bread and milk yesterday. So I went to Tesco. For two items. I'm in my mid 60s, but could possibly be taken for 70 by someone with their judgy hat on.

Wouldn't it be nice if people just focused on their own behaviour and left the rest of us alone?

1forsorrow · 06/05/2020 14:58

Their age is clearly relevant as over 70s have been advised to shield as they are a higher risk category, for those who seem to have failed to notice that! Haven't read the full thread but that isn't true. Matt Hancock has been banging on about it since Sunday.

ZaraW · 06/05/2020 14:58

OP as stated above none of your business. Are you always so judgemental/ageist?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 06/05/2020 14:59

What did they say when you asked them about it op?

Sonichu · 06/05/2020 14:59

Well done OP you've observed lockdown better than two strangers in Tesco. Gold star for you.

Ejmorgan · 06/05/2020 15:00

One of the biggest losses will be the media as people are currently not buying papers , I will happily go out just to buy a newspaper if it means a link to the rest of the world . Yes I can view online however my 99 year old grandmother cant .

BuddleiaTime · 06/05/2020 15:00

They were waving their birth certificates around? How bizarre.

ghostyslovesheets · 06/05/2020 15:00

my mistake - maybe they didn't want to use online shopping for cheese and a paper though?

Kordelia · 06/05/2020 15:01

Never was a truer word spoken.

InfiniteSheldon · 06/05/2020 15:01
