Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

Yesterday when I was having my daily walk I saw bus coming. I was curious to see how busy it would be. There was only three people in it, all elderly. Where were they going?

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 22:02

To the shops? To the park for a walk?

SudokuBook · 07/05/2020 22:04

To the shops?

Maybe they’d been offered lifts by friends but declined in case someone saw them getting out the car at Morrisons and judged them.

mumda · 07/05/2020 22:11

I think the supermarkets should have done a bit of a shuffle and had a bread and milk section really near the front (or in the unused cafes) so that people who just need bread and milk in between big shops can pop in.
I know there'd be people just wanting a few more "basics" adding to a top up corner though.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 07/05/2020 22:11

To work? (As some "elderly people" are key workers and still have to go to work?
To do their weekly shop?
Who knows?

Headbangersandmash · 07/05/2020 22:18

The government caring about the over 70s has got to be the funniest load of bullshit I've heard on here!

I learned on MN that they were an important section of the Tory vote. Is that not true?

Headbangersandmash · 07/05/2020 22:18

One of my local buses stops at the hospital

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 07/05/2020 22:21

It gives me great pleasure to announce on this thread that yesterday I sent out my elderly (proper elderly - nearly 90) father to but chocolate and wine so we, plus my mother in law who's got cancer, could get fat and pissed watching snot TV.

Today said properly elderly father went to the park and found what was probably the only open coffee shop,in the county and bought a coffee and cake to eat on a bench in the sun in said park.

Both elderly persons - both quite pissed again - would like to tell the people on this thread who claim that they shouldn't do what they want to do to fuck right off. Thank you.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 07/05/2020 22:21

That's shit TV.

As I said we're pissed again.

remine · 07/05/2020 22:25

I don't think anyone's noticed the fact that they gave each other a lift? So they weren't abiding by social distancing, unless they happen to be living in the same household.

As a supermarket worker, I see a lot of the same customers every day coming to buy one non-essential item. The aisles are thin and social distancing is near impossible to do properly. The whole point of lockdown is to minimise the amount people are going out. Anyone taking the lockdown seriously should want to minimise the amount they are going to the shops as it involves interacting with other people. Fine if you've forgotten something/urgently need something, but on the whole it would be really helpful if people did try their best to limit how often they go to the shops. In all fairness we don't know the full situation of these ladies. But what I'm trying to say for those who are, going to the shops daily isn't necessary.

No, he’s only been mentioned about 24 times on this thread.

Headbangersandmash · 07/05/2020 22:32

They could be sisters or 2 friends who've combined households.

They are putting themselves at increased risk but you can't stop adults doing what they want to do. I thought that the UK population were the most compliant in Europe? Maybe look at the bigger picture of people being responsible rather than the odd person in a community who won't or can't.

Smilethoyourheartisbreaking 😂

It honestly baffles me why people are so obsessed with enforcing their own made up rules on others. There is no law on going to the supermarket.

LoveIslandVirgin · 07/05/2020 22:48

@choc71 that’s unacceptable. You need to start an AIBU thread about your unsupportive husband who isn’t taking this pandemic seriously. Wine is essential otherwise off licences would be closed. Buy in bulk choc!!

Aslan007 · 07/05/2020 22:52

@TheCanterburyWhales You are more prone to dying from covid 19 if your over 60. The diseases is lethal for the elderly

Cornishclio · 07/05/2020 23:05

I don't think there is a rule citing minimum number of items in a shop. Perhaps they can't carry much. I agree to minimise contact it makes sense to stock up but if you don't have a car or way of carrying loads what choice do they have. We are doing click and collect or home delivery and are not vulnerable precisely because some of these people who are supposed to be shielding aren't following the advice anyway.

Oh go bile your heid. 60 is not elderly ffs! And its not lethal for every actual "elderly" person either. If they have no underlying health conditions they can make a recovery just the same as someone younger.

There isnt, never has been!

Why do you think they should be shielding?

MarvellousMayhem · 08/05/2020 00:18

I’m with you OP. It does seems crazy to risk your life for some cheese and a newspaper.
The age is relevant as people over 60 and above are high risk of dying from COVID-19. I can’t even believe people don’t understand why you said this!
Of course yes there is no law against it. There’s no law stopping people from stepping out in front of car either or jumping off a bridge but most people would be concerned by this!
