Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

OP posts:

Newspapers need to be bought daily, plus was out of cheese. I bought 3 things in a supermarket yesterday because they were out of stock at the one I did my main shop in and by sheer luck there was no queue for the first time in weeks at Waitrose. Yes I could have substituted but after so many weeks of not being able to eat out I think we deserve to be able to cook a nice dinner!!!

Here I AM, surely?

midnightstar66 · 07/05/2020 14:36

The ignorance on this thread is astounding. You are dimwits if you think it’s ok to buy a couple of items.

Well thankfully we have you to keep us all right and under your completely made up rules eh?
Phew whatever would we all do without you?

But seriously:

  1. Name calling doesnt win you any bonus points.
  2. Name calling makes everyone else think you are just another dementor throwing their weight around on here cos they cant do it in rl.
  3. The ignorance is not other people on here..Hmm
  4. Where does it say in the 'roolz' that we have to buy more than 2 items?
Astrid84 · 07/05/2020 14:54

I dont buy all my shopping from one shop, I usually end up in a different store to get the things I cant get in the one store

Waspnest · 07/05/2020 15:19

I sort of agree with you OP. Sometimes at our local ALDI we do have to queue so it's beyond me why you'd wait for half an hour just for two items particularly since the usual ALDI/LIDL etiquette of allowing someone with just a basket to go in front at the till has gone out the window.

But generally my view is I'm going shopping twice a week for 3 households, using hand sanitiser, wearing glasses and scarf and generally doing what I can to keep myself and the other households safe. If others want to take risks there's bugger all I can do about it, they are putting themselves most at risk particularly if they're elderly and have health problems.

Scrumbleton · 07/05/2020 16:12

So confused - that’s so far from essential activity visiting 3 shops I just can’t believe you’re offering it up as an example of reasonable activity !!! I get wanting to buy a specific thing but there’s a national emergency - why not just get something else while doing your own shop. I get people don’t like being judged but while the rules exist people who break them will be judged.

SpicedCamomile · 07/05/2020 16:16

I have posted a link three times already on this thread to the College of Policing page that says it is OK to buy a couple of items, or even one item, if they are necessities like bread, milk or, as they specifically say, a newspaper.

Alsohuman · 07/05/2020 16:29

Well there are the real rules and then there are dementor rules. And if you don’t obey the latter, the dementors will dement, regardless of what the real rules say.

Ah, but what you're forgetting is that if something doesn't fit in with their agenda a great many people will just simply ignore it and pretend it isn't there.

You could post the link 333 times, if they don't want to see it, they won't.

If you need a particular thing for health reasons like allergies then you have to go out more than once to get it. Whats so difficult to understand about that? My local shop has sfa in the way of dairy free stuff and my local Aldi which I use for most of my shopping has none at all so I have to go elsewhere.

If you cant get bread or milk in one shop because they have run out then you have to go elsewhere.

People are needing more shopping these days because people are at home more, not everyone has a tardis type fridge freezer which holds a week or two weeks worth of shopping for the whole family. There may be 15 more breakfasts and lunches plus drinks and snacks a week! You have to do top ups.
Its not bloody rocket science.

purplelila2 · 07/05/2020 16:58

What's it to you what people buy or deem essential.

What an idiot.

Xenia · 07/05/2020 17:10

Let us hope they relax all this soon so people can just mind their own business. No one knows someone else's situation. I was out again today (two days in a row) with 60 items of business post. Today I didn't pop into the empty shop with no queue but had I done so I would not be breaking the law.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 07/05/2020 17:12

Are you talking about your rules or the ACTUAL rules?

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 07/05/2020 17:13

Because not everyone has as much money as you if you can afford to get things you don't need as well just so people don't peer into your basket and count your items?

BirdieFriendReturns · 07/05/2020 17:16

I sent DH to Sainsbury's. English muffins, bacon, hollandaise sauce, avocado and grated cheese.

Who wants to tell me my items aren’t essential and I’m murdering old ladies?

Yes you are being unreasonable and quitw selfish infact. Also, if they're behind you as you stated, what's the problem. You're not being held up or anything. They're entitled to go out unless told not to. EVERYONE IS. This is a lockdown situation hut the government has only ADVISED us to stay in and NOT TO GATHER IN LARGE GROUPS. We are not under house arrest, although with attitudes like that, some of us should be!

Berganza · 07/05/2020 17:30

Stasi

shivers91 · 07/05/2020 17:32

Oh ffs. Some people don't have the luxury of having cupboard space for a million things that they wouldn't usually use in case of emergencies. And sometimes you just fancy a bit of cheese and there's none in the fridge. Some people are so worried about money day to day that they don't do a big shop but get wee bits here and there. Nobody was breaking the law so get off your soapbox for the love of God

ellesworth · 07/05/2020 17:33

I am a carer and work 12 hour shifts. I have done one nightshift and two day shifts this week (since Sun). Dropped into Tesco to get a handful of things after work last night because buggered if I'm going for a big shop on my only day off (working tomorrow as well).

Liketoshop · 07/05/2020 17:33

Are you the supermarket police now? It's still a democracy, isn't it?

jillb55 · 07/05/2020 17:33

I think we should be questioning the government on their handling of this crisis rather than what two pensioners buy in a supermarket.
