To think this woman just embarrassed herself

Just back from a dog-walk. My neighbourhood is very quiet, virtually no cars on the road. A woman comes towards me on a bike, on the pavement, I stand to the side but she brushes my elbow on her way past. She cycles on about 20-30 yards, stops cycling and yells, "FUCKING CUNT!" at me, then wheels her bike into her house. Presumably her neighbours will have heard her. Class. Sorry, just had to vent as it kind of upset me. I know people are having a tough time but there's no need to shout abuse at people in the street.

Looking at the way people are driving around here, I don't really blame cyclist to feel safer on the pavements.

As well as punishing dangerous and law-breaking motorists (and cyclists), more cycle paths are the answer. A bike is vulnerable when sharing a road with massive motor vehicles, but that's no excuse for transferring your vulnerability to the pedestrians - many of them children, elderly and/or disabled - who are using the pavement. It isn't the fault of the old lady in a wheelchair that a lorry driver just cut you up at a left turn.

5foot5 · 04/05/2020 14:31

Yes to people walking on the road, too! My DH did it last night. It's like some bizarre game of chicken.

TBF it does depend upon the circumstances. When we are out for our daily walk if we see anybody coming towards us on the pavement we cross to the other side if possible. If there is no pavement on the other side, or pedestrians on that side too, then we either have to squeeze in to one side or, if the pavement is narrow, step in to the road. Obviously we check for traffic first, but sometimes it is just easier to walk in the road until you get past providing nothing is coming.

But adults cycling on the pavement would annoy me for sure.

waterlego · 04/05/2020 14:34

Cyclists may well feel safer on the pavements but they shouldn’t be there. If they don’t have the confidence and experience to ride on the road then they shouldn’t be riding a bike. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thinkingabout1t · 04/05/2020 14:43

Nasty bit of work. Pavement cyclists are a curse everywhere, and she's obviously doing it deliberately to be antisocial, as the roads are nearly empty. I'd keep a safe distance as she sounds violent. But I'd note her address just for future reference.

Clutterbugsmum · 04/05/2020 14:44

Perhaps she was talking about herself Grin. And too be fair it sounds correct.

Ponoka7 · 04/05/2020 14:44

A lot of drivers are driving too fast because there's less Traffic about. She might have been on the pavement because she was going into her house. But she should have dismounted when she saw you.

Was there no way that you could have stepped into the road? I would walk away from cyclists when i have a dog with me.

Now we do need to step out of the way, where we might not have done and the person who will find it easier to move should do so.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 04/05/2020 14:46

Go find a bag of dog shit off a tree and pop it through her letterbox. Bitch.

The80sweregreat · 04/05/2020 14:47

The virus has brought out the worst in people I'm afraid.

JustOneSquareofDarkChocolate · 04/05/2020 14:49

I'm sorry this happened to you - it would have upset and annoyed me!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 04/05/2020 14:52

That’s why I now carry a lovely big golf umbrella with me. As soon as I see a cyclist, group of people or simply someone who gives the impression they’re going to come too close, I pop it up and tilt it forward slightly. I do get funny looks, but I don’t care. 😁

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/05/2020 14:57

When I commuted to my old job there was another commuter like this - only he was violent too. Would deliberately knock me into his elbow almost every morning on the train platform. One day I lost it and shoved my handbag into his peddles and he went flying before scarpering off because that’s what temperamental ‘road warrior’ assholes tend to do when you stick up for yourself in public. Thankfully I wasn’t caught but I never did see the git again.

ThrowbackMagic · 04/05/2020 14:59

@CheriLittlebottom

Perfect! Grin

Newjez · 04/05/2020 15:00

She shouldn't have been riding on the pavement.

Plus, you should never call someone a fucking cunt and let them know where you live.

I guess with the shortage of PPE, you'll need to use a doggy bag to push dog poo through her letter box this evening?

Tara336 · 04/05/2020 15:02

Some people are just idiots! I had a cyclist ride at me on a footpath (really wide path) and start shouting at me that I was walking on a cycle path. The direction I was coming from had absolutely no signs to say any part of the path was a cycle path and the path was so wide there no need to ride up close to me or my dog, it was unnecessary twatery on his part!

Twinkleyrocks · 04/05/2020 15:06

Grown adults on the footpath cycling... Enough said

HeyDuggeewhatchadoin · 04/05/2020 15:06

@greenyblueeyedgirl I clicked the thread for that reason too Blush not that I swear at people in the street either.
Thank goodness it wasn't about us!

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 04/05/2020 15:09

Was there no way that you could have stepped into the road? I would walk away from cyclists when i have a dog with me.
Hm. I think I was assuming she would either move onto the road or just, you know, cycle by and be on her way.

OP posts:
SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/05/2020 15:13

And why the hell is a grown woman cycling on the pavement?

Just don't get started on adults cycling on the pavement - especially now when there is hardly anything on the roads!

OP - I would have been shaken, too.

A horrible and unnecessary verbal assault.

I had just been thinking today as I walked the dog how very courteous most people are - thanking me for sending the dogs, to one side (bikes, horses, prams), or stepping aside themselves to give room; almost everyone saying "Good morning" and occasionally exchanging a few friendly words from a safe distance (usually much greater a distance than 2m).

I'm pleased that I haven't encountered anyone like that!

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/05/2020 15:13

OP are you in East London? Just that over the weekend DH had a similar incident, also a woman cycling on the pavement, as she squeezed past him she asked "haven't you heard of coronavirus dickhead?"

East London is rife with people cycling on pavements. I think it's literally 50% of adult cyclists on the pavement right now. I wouldn't mind but they spent ages building cycle super-highways near me yet these morons still ride on the pavement. Even when there's no traffic. Totally unnecessary and incredibly selfish.

johnstonfont · 04/05/2020 15:14

I’m getting increasingly frustrated with adults cycling on the pavement or north bank if the Thames (lots of notices saying “no cycling”)

If you aren’t brave enough to cycle on the roads you shouldn’t be out.

DOI: Regular cyclist!

Longdistance · 04/05/2020 15:16

Pop a note through the door stating ‘the only fucking cunt is the one riding a bike on the pavement’.

Kordelia · 04/05/2020 15:21

It's nothing to do with lockdown or the virus. She's just a horrible person.

Some people cycle on the pavement here, even though there's a cycle path running parallel, about a hundred yards away across a grassy area. When I politely pointed out the cycle path to a cyclist who came silently up behind me on the pavement he gave me the finger.
Charming person.

ILuvQuarintinis · 04/05/2020 15:22

Take photo of door ? Report her ? You think the police have nothing better to do ? Jeez..

FlaskMaster · 04/05/2020 15:26

That's really bizarre! She was in the wrong, but she was angry enough to bellow that out, but she was controlled enough to wait until she was a safe distance away to do so! It's so weird. I don't think she embarrassed herself though, sounds like she couldn't give a fuck.

imsooverthisdrama · 04/05/2020 15:28

I'm impressed that you didn't shout back I'd be fuming. Yes she's made a right tit of herself , and even if a neighbour asked her what happened she'd say that woman in my way while I cycled past . You don't call someone a cunt ever and it was her fault in the first place . I suppose you can just put it down to very odd times but she shouldn't be going out if she reacts like that .
