To ask if you will get the Covid vaccination?

Just that really, assuming there will be one. Put this on AIBU rather than the Coronavirus topic to enable voting. Interested to see people's opinions as there seems to be a set of people in my friendship group who would be lining up to get it, and a few who are far more cautious to the point of suspicious about it - they're not anti vacc people by any means, just not comfortable about something that will (assuming one can be made) have been rushed through testing.

I'm very undecided about it, remaining open minded, but won't be the first in line and am concerned it will be mandatory.

So
AIBU - I will get the vaccine
AIBU - I will not get the vaccine

Err, what are the voting options?!

PrettyTricky · 04/05/2020 12:42

Ffs obviously that should have been

YABU - I will get the vaccine
YANBU - I will not get the vaccine.

I will get the vaccine

The testing has been sped up but they won't have missed any important safety aspects

Remember a big way it's been sped up is it's jumped to the top of the pile and isn't constantly sat in a queue waiting to be reviewed

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 04/05/2020 12:44

Another silly thread, this is the third

VickyEadieofThigh · 04/05/2020 12:45

I'm stuck with being confined to my house if I don't - of course I'll get it.

Aposterhasnoname · 04/05/2020 12:47

Yes. I’ll be front of the queue. In fact I would have volunteered for the trial but all the centres are too far away.

PrettyTricky · 04/05/2020 12:50

@NoMorePoliticsPlease why is it silly? I've found a variety of views on this in my circle, Surely it's quite an important question as, if we don't impost mandatory vaccination, we would need a certain amount of the population to be compliant to achieve herd immunity?

They won’t offer it to all ( well not at the start at least) so for most the question is pointless.

The shielding group and vulnerable will be first and those people have a much higher risk of dying I’d they catch it so they’d be mad to turn it down really wouldn’t they

GirlCalledJames · 04/05/2020 12:53

YABU to assume (and perpetuate the fiction) that testing will be rushed. These things are tightly regulated.
A lot of resources will be thrown at it to speed it up. That’s not the same as rushing.
Production will be rushed (by starting the production ahead of time and destroying everything produced if approval is not granted.

AgeLikeWine · 04/05/2020 12:53

I’m in a vulnerable group due to asthma, so I will be at the front of the of the queue.

GirlCalledJames · 04/05/2020 12:54

Government can impose various nudges to get people to vaccinate. For example, no school for unvaccinated children.

Hoggleludo · 04/05/2020 12:56

I will get it

Even if it's rushed. Doesn't mean they miss out steps.

It will be vigorously tested. It will be safe. And at the end of the day. This is going to be around for years. Well for the rest of time......like smallpox. Which even though has been mostly eradicated. It could still appear.

I'm in the shielded group. So it's either a vaccine. Or I stay in till it's almost eradicated by herd immunity which will be some 60-70 years.

mrpumblechook · 04/05/2020 12:57

You won't be first in line to be offered it anyway so no point worrying about it .it will probably be offered to those who currently receive the flu vaccination on the NHS first. Assuming you are healthy you will be at the back of the queue. Herd immunity isn't really required as if it is not a live vaccine the vulnerable can be immunised anyway. Children aren't at high risk and adults will be able to take their chances if they want to.

DerbyshireGirly · 04/05/2020 13:03

I'm not at all anti vaxx but I wouldn't want to be front of the queue for a new vaccine. Fortunately I am in rude health so I expect it wouldn't be available to me for a while anyway.

GirlCalledJames · 04/05/2020 13:13

For those who wouldn’t want to get a new vaccine, would you ever get the flu vaccine? It’s new each year.
When you get a vaccine, do you check ahead of time exactly which vaccine will be used (there’s more than one for most illnesses) and do you then look up how long it has been available? New illnesses aren’t the only new vaccines.

bushtailadventures · 04/05/2020 13:20

I will be getting it, I work with reception age children and am vulnerable. It's get the vaccine or give up work I think, and I love my job so don't really fancy that option.

bengalcat · 04/05/2020 13:24

Yes . Have the flu vaccine ( as frontline ) annually .

I would've volunteered for the trial but slightly above the age limit .

ludothedog · 04/05/2020 14:00

I think I've had it but have never been tested. It's just DD and I in the house and there's no way we could socially distance, plus at that time (early March) the GP was still saying it was an upper respiritoy track infection but not Covid as I hadn't been abroad and hadn't been in contact with anyone who had. Plus on top symptoms took more than 6 weeks to clear.

My point is, if the chances are that DD and I have had it, and we can get a test to prove it, does that mean we don't need the vaccine as it wouldn't give us more protection than we already have? Obviously if we gain nothing from the vaccine, then there is no point in having one!

So, my answer is more information and personal testing required.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/05/2020 14:03

I looked at volunteering for a local trial, but am fractionally too old. I will be first in line when
a) there is a vaccine
b) I am eligible to get it

Devlesko · 04/05/2020 14:13

I dunno, it's not available yet and i don't know what will be in it, or anything else about a non existant vaccine.

ifonly4 · 04/05/2020 14:33

I'm not in a rush to be first in the queue to be honest, but once it starts being rolled out and hopefully no problems are being found then yes I will.
