I am very lucky to live in the New Forest. So I have just been for my daily walk with my dog. Yesterday there were 2 new born donkey foals. I come up the hill to see a family of 2 adults and 2 children, probably 11-12 years , so not young.

The mother of one of the foals was rearing up at their dog, that they’d let go up to it. They did pull it away, it was on a lead, so they had let it do it on purpose. Them the children were going right up close to the donkey and foal, within inches to take photos.
I was too far away to say anything at that point, this went on for a good 5 minutes until I was in talking range.
The mother donkey then decided it had enough and started to run away, because the baby was so young it couldn’t keep up, all the while Dad and 2 children were chasing it!
I asked the mother to stop the children, only to get a mouthful of abuse from the father coming back, he actually said - if my children want to play with them, they can!!!!!
I told him they weren’t pets, he then replied with- I live here and they are owned, so are pets, I replied with - if you did live here, you wouldn’t be so stupid and have more respect .
He told me to fuck off and walked away. WIBU

Nope he was a twat

Sexnotgender · 03/05/2020 17:55

Arseholes. Some people shouldn’t be allowed out.

PinkiOcelot · 03/05/2020 17:56

What bloody arse holes! Pity the donkey didn’t turn around and kick out at them.

If my children want to play with them they can?! Well you see how that’s going to turn out!!

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 03/05/2020 17:57

No, YANBU. The man was a grade A twat!

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 03/05/2020 18:00

He needs a swift hoof in the nads.

Hoppinggreen · 03/05/2020 18:02

They were lucky, I’ve seen someone have to run for their lives from a New Forest wild pony.
Bunch of idiots

Grumpbum123 · 03/05/2020 18:03

W⚓️S I am near the NF and this is so common

NatashaRomanov · 03/05/2020 18:04

You found a whole family of cockwombles.
If you can, try and track the owners (local fb pages?). Make them aware. They may want to move the poor donkeys.

Unravellingslowly · 03/05/2020 18:17

Pity the donkey didn’t turn around and kick out at them

^ I agree. Poor animals.

Pixiefringe · 03/05/2020 18:30

If they want to play with them they can? Sounds like the parents have 2 Veruca Salts in the making.

Wifeofbikerviking · 03/05/2020 18:33

Arg so annoying. Theyll get kicked by a horse or donkey eventually . Poor foals

Mammatino · 03/05/2020 18:38

Arseholes. Turns out there is a fucking lot of them around.

Punkatheart · 03/05/2020 18:40

Well done for saying something. I would have done the same.

fronttoback · 03/05/2020 18:42

With any luck he'll get a kick in the head bollocks next time. Donkeys are not to be messed with when they are protecting their foals.

Stupid bastard.

Biddie191 · 03/05/2020 18:52

This type of behaviour is sadly all too common. Well done for trying to get them to see some sense, sometimes it's like banging your head against a wall.

One of our ponies is due to foal soon, and I've been trying to decide if it's safe for her to be in the field by the road - the best field grass and levelness wise, but people....

Corna · 03/05/2020 18:54

For some people animals are basically moving objects whose only intended purpose is keeping them/their children entertained. Twats. Thanks for for doing the right thing!Flowers

Cherrysoup · 03/05/2020 19:01

He was an idiot and he’s lucky his kids didn’t get hurt. I’ve had experienced friends have their skull cracked all the way round handling a horse she knows. People are stupid. In my area, there are dozens of new ‘Please don’t feed the horses’ notices. I don’t know why people think it’s a good idea to play with baby donks or feed animals that don’t belong to them. Two horses near me died because dog walkers threw the poo bags into the field rather than take it home. The autopsy revealed dozens of bags. Utterly disgusting.

pigsDOfly · 03/05/2020 19:06

Well done for saying something.

Pity the donkey didn't give him a good kick.

Not quite the same thing but in the past I've had words with people who were encouraging their dogs to attack squirrels in two different parks.

Both parks were full of squirrels that were almost tame because they were used to people feeding them, so the poor bloody animals were running up to the people only to have the dogs run at them encouraged by their owners.

One of the women actually became really aggressive towards me, actually thought she was going to get physical at one point.

People like this think the world revolves around them and their wants.

Idiots the lot of them.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/05/2020 19:08

Doesn't matter if it was a hamster, a dog, a donkey, a cow or a tiger... Mother's protect their babies, so you don't get between them.

AmelieTaylor · 03/05/2020 19:13

Well done 🌷

Great shame the donkey didn't employ a bit of rough justice! Poor babies...

Rachie1973 · 03/05/2020 19:15

My pet hate (from new forest) is when people feed the ponies then get all upset at the ponies chasing them.

Queenoftheashes · 03/05/2020 19:22

What a prick

PhilSwagielka · 03/05/2020 19:34

YANBU. One, it's cruel to the animals and two, those kids could get hurt if they're not careful. Frightened horses can be dangerous.

krustykittens · 03/05/2020 19:35

Thank you for saying something, OP. I have ponies and the notion that some people have that my animals are public property drives me crazy! Those children could have been seriously hurt as well as the distress that has been caused to the animals.

FlamingoQueen · 03/05/2020 19:35

I’ve seen people on Dartmoor feeding the ponies and have shouted out the window at them before about being morons. Unfortunately, there are idiots out there. You did good x
