AIBU?

To be terrified I’ve got an infection?

Shamelessly posting here for traffic as I’ve worked myself into a bit of a state over this and need advise ASAP. Judge me all you want, I know I’ve been incredibly fucking stupid and I am absolutely mortified but I don’t know what to do.

Was seeing someone casually before the lockdown started, and being the daft cow that I am we had unprotected sex twice. Yesterday I began having green discharge coming out constantly (I’d say the same amount of liquid as I’d get mid-period) and it’s really swollen down there to the point I can’t walk properly as it kills. The discharge also looks like pus to me, so I’m terrified of a serious infection or sepsis. Other than the possibility I’ve caught something, I also suspect I had a very early miscarriage last month, it was around the time my period would have been but it was not a normal period at all, huge clots, intense pain that made me vomit, back agony etc but I assumed it had all passed and never got checked out. I’m concerned some of that retained and is infected? My period came normally this month and I’d just come to the end of it when this other stuff started.

The swelling, pain and constant discharge is making it impossible for me to function properly. I used the Lloyd’s Online Doctor service and filled in the form describing my symptoms and they told me to visit a GP urgently and said their services couldn’t help.

Except I can’t do that at the moment and also all of the sexual health clinics near me are shut. I’m very worried about this and worried there’s an infection further up in my internal organs as I keep getting random abdominal stabby pains and I feel a bit nauseous. What can I do? I definitely don’t want to risk my future fertility or my life by ignoring this.

You really should go to A&E. I work for the NHS, there's a real concern at the moment that people are not accessing treatment when they need it, A&E is open for business and has corona- free zones so please don't worry. And don't be scared they will judge you, they won't. They're only concern will be to treat you. Please don't leave this as it sounds like a really nasty infection. Could well be related to the miscarriage rather than an sti.

I had very similar symptoms to you, I was so ill and felt horrendous. Shivering, dizzy, nauseous. It turned out to be PID and the doctor who saw me at the GUM clinic said I’d been lucky and if I ever got similar symptoms again to go straight to A&E.

God yes, A and E-worthy. Wouldn’t bother with 111 with symptoms like that, you need to see gynae.

Go to A&E, by the time you've messed about on hold with 111 you're likely to have been seen and back home instead.

A&E would be best option if not ring 111 they properly would prescribe antibiotics . Many sit treated by run of the mill antibiotics and get a full screen asap .
many thing is calm down nothing that can't be sorted

Lloyds were right.

Go STRAIGHT to A and E rather than footer about trying to contact 111 or GP, and do not wait until Monday. Or tonight.

A and E has the examination and immediate testing facilities you need, a GP does not.

Those symptoms need to be seen ASAP, so when you arrive at A and E tell the triage nurse every detail you posted here, do not hold anything back out of embarrassment.

If you're worried about being overheard by other patients in reception, write it all down before you go.

111 isn't cutting this, as I said before, A&E. Don't wait.

OP, although the discharge itself may be the sign of an infection treatable with antibiotics, the swelling on its own is a serious enough issue that should be checked by a doctor.
Even if it’s an infection, you’d need antibiotics which you can’t get online without seeing a doctor.
A&E is virtually empty - a friend of mine had an accident a week ago and was seen straightaway which is unheard of - at our local A&E you’d only get seen quickly if your head is falling off.
Get yourself down there now and everything will be much clear.
Some infections can cause infertility.
Your body is clearly telling you that you need treatment, go and get it.
Forget about being reckless, it’s done now, you’re a grown woman, lesson learnt.

You really need to go to A&E OP. Don’t waste time with 111 with symptoms that severe.

If it reassures you, I had to call 111 on Friday evening and was ultimately taken to A&E in an ambulance. 111 was pretty speedy, the ambulance arrived within about half an hour even though I wasn't life-threatening (had broken my foot), and I whizzed through triage, X-ray, etc at A&E. Within 4 hours of the accident I was back home. I think you will be surprised at how efficient and not-shit the process is right now. It's not a bad time to need emergency care, really.

I felt v guilty about going in but was repeatedly told that they would rather people did, they are if anything overstaffed, CV cases are dealt with elsewhere, and it could be FAR more dangerous not to attend A&E than to stay home for fear of wasting resources or coming into contact with infection.

Just go. It sounds really awful.

A&E and take a bag with essentials (nightwear and toiletries, phone and charger, book) for a few days as you might need IV antibiotics. It could be that you have retained products of conception. You need an urgent scan. Don't phone 111, it's a waste of your time here. Just go to a&e as you need a gynaecologist opinion.

You need treatment immediately.

ilikebooksandplants · 03/05/2020 12:14

All 111 will do is tell you to go to a&e, that’s even if you get through with everyone ringing up to talk about their coughs.

You sound very unwell OP, and you should go to a&e without further delay.

I don’t understand why you think the GP is closed though. They’re doing triage over the phone (I had a phone appointment even when we were in the peak of the coronavirus stuff!) and I picked up a prescription through the door after speaking with the dr. Surely this is the same everywhere?

Report
Notnownotneverever · 03/05/2020 12:15

A&E please OP. Don’t try and guess at your diagnosis. Also don’t wait for 111. You are likely to be told to go to A&E anyway so you are just delaying.
