A couple of times a month, sometimes more sometimes less, I have really intrusive images or sounds in my dreams. This morning I woke up to someone shouting "help" and my god it was so real. I had to go and stand outside my dad's door at 4am to see if I could hear him snoring as it sounded like it came from next door. I get this quite a lot. I also have images that literally flash in to my head so vividly like I am starting straight at them. The last time this happened it was a skull and crossbones, and the time before the face of a dead body partially buried in soil (morbid I know). I wake up with my heart racing and breathing rapidly with that jelly legs feeling. Does anyone else have weird recurring experiences like this?

Or anything else out of curiosity because it's super interesting ☺️

Very recently I felt like somebody was physically lying on top of me on top of my duvet crushing me into the mattress, I felt like I couldn't breathe. It felt real. Suddenly, I told myself I was dreaming, and I managed to wake up, but I was gasping for air.

Don't understand it. Scary.

ShambalaHambala · 02/05/2020 23:20

Eine it's called sleep paralysis. I've had it a few times and so have two of my family members. Scary but very interesting.

Have you always had this? If this is a newish thing, I would check it out with your gp when you can.

Neepers · 02/05/2020 23:26

Recently I have been woken by really loud noises. One was the beep the smoke detector makes and one was like a tumble dryer falling over. Both sounds were loud and woke me up with a start and sounded like they were just above my head. I googled a bit and discovered -Exploding Head Syndrome 🤯. I also get the thing where you think you are awake and someone is sitting on the bed or at least in the room with you but you are frozen and can’t move or speak. It’s horrible.

priya38 · 02/05/2020 23:31

On numerous occasions now Ive got woken up by my DS shouting mum. A few times I've got out of bed with one eye open and one eyes closed only to go into his bedroom and he's fast asleep. To then get into bed and look at the time and it's like 4am. It's happened at random times,l. Sometimes I've even called back "yes?" But then I've fell asleep again.

DollyDally · 02/05/2020 23:32

I get sleep paralysis a lot, and also sometimes lucid dreaming (where you realise you are dreaming - I usually fly!). I’m not woo in any way, firmly believe it’s based in science - I used to resist going to sleep when I was little and this is just something that’s always happened to me.
I also sometimes hear really loud bangs or shouts just as I’m falling asleep.

wheresmymojo · 02/05/2020 23:32

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

That's reasonably common...I have had it a couple of times. Google sleep paralysis.

Pomegranateseeds · 02/05/2020 23:34

I've always had these type of experiences whilst asleep. Not constantly but on and off throughout my life. I frequently sleep walk and talk also at certain times in my life. I have bipolar disorder (but am very stable and have my condition under control) and these are seen as part of my symptoms. Not implying that you have it of course, just that it's something you could discuss with your GP. For me it happens when I'm under pressure. It's like a red flag or signal to me to take care of myself because I don't always realise that an anxiety or worry is affecting me.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/05/2020 23:34

I just googled it and I'm really surprised as I have an associated issue and I knew nothing about it.

ShambalaHambala · 02/05/2020 23:36

Really interesting. I have GAD and PTSD from domestic abuse. Wonder if it's related

OP posts:
EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/05/2020 23:37

Yes its GAD and PTSD for me too OP x

Titsywoo · 02/05/2020 23:40

This is a hyponopompic hallucination - I often hear a doorbell ringing which wakes me up but isn't real.

ShambalaHambala · 02/05/2020 23:41

I didn't realise they were linked either. How interesting.

I have two reoccurring dreams.

One of the dreams is of me being in my local indoor market. The context varies a lot, sometimes I’m shopping, sometimes I’m working in one of the stalls, sometimes I’m eating in there, once I was scared and running away from someone in there.

My other reoccurring dream is of my late grans flat. Ever since she passed away, I’ve been dreaming of her flat. She’s always dead and not there, but I’m always in my grans flat alone doing different things, sometimes I’m hiding out there, sometimes I’m feeding her cats, sometimes I’m living there, sometimes I’m looking for my gran but can’t find her.

Titsywoo · 02/05/2020 23:42

Yes i suffered from it much more when I had anxiety disorder. No PTSD though.

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/05/2020 23:45

I sometimes dream I am falling from very high and I wake up right before I hit the ground.

Rono16 · 02/05/2020 23:46

Today thought I would have a nap whilst the little was asleep, been doing long hours. I was in bed annoyed that I couldn't sleep as I had been startling all morning from exhaustion. It wasn't until the toddler body slammed me that I realised I had been dreaming that I was laying in bed unable to sleep. Apparently I was out cold as the husband had come up, got the screaming child up and brought them in to our room to see if I was OK.

KindnessCrusader · 02/05/2020 23:47

At least twice a week I wake up in the middle of the night and 'remember' I'm being filmed and that there's some big secret. That everyone has seen me at my worst and I really must remember that the cameras are always on. Not sure what it means but this has been going on for YEARS Confused

priya38 · 03/05/2020 00:02

@ManualFlusherSnot

The supermarket recurring dream is about you needing to open your mind to new possibilities. A supermarket suggests a wide range of choices. So maybe are you not taking care of your emotional needs. If you can't decide what to buy then maybe there is some confusion or indecision in your life. You running out of the supermarket would be you running away from many possibilities (goods on shelves) in your life.

DamnYankee · 03/05/2020 00:18

I do!
I had a dream that I vivisected an intruder. Saw/felt slicing through breastbone, saw layers of skin and fat, etc. Enjoyed biology classes. Did the usual dissections. However, not a medical professional. I actually get woozy/faint at the sight of (my own) blood...Must lay down for draws.
I also dream about dead people breaking into my house because they want to "tell their story" as well as a faceless someone sitting in the room with me. Most of the time, I can feel waves of malevolence just emanating off them. I've also been telephoned by my dead grandmother.
It is really remarkable what the human brain comes up with! Particularly in times of stress. I've had some doozies the last couple of days....

DamnYankee · 03/05/2020 00:25

Me, too! Very interesting. I'd never heard that! My psychologist explained the dead people dream and evil-person-sitting-in-the-room dream as intrusive thoughts I personify. Made sense to me.
However, my psychiatrist(s) have either suggested more meds (nope!) or simply said "Hmmm..."

Otherwise, they were/are brilliant. Confused

TwatCat · 03/05/2020 00:32

I get sleep paralysis regularly. Mostly mild but every 6 months more or les I get a bad one where the figure comes in to my room or bed.

dazzlinghaze · 03/05/2020 00:38

I've had this a few times! Its usually that I wake totally sure the buzzer for my flat has gone but when I look out the window there's never anyone there so I assume it's just a dream.
