Foodbank usage

Hard hat on.
First of all I regularly give to food banks; especially now when there is so much need.
Aibu to think that if you have about £2500 per month and very few bills for this one adult and one child you don't need to be using one? House bought outright also.
This is someone that know well. Very surprised they feel entitled to use them.

How do you know their personal financial situation so well? Many people are not honest to others about money. How does it really affect you if this person is taking food from a food bank that they don’t really need, if that is even what’s happening? Maybe they do need it.

Mrskeats · 02/05/2020 17:33

Believe me I know the situation. To put why here would be outing. Obviously it doesn't affect me but I just think it's awful behaviour.

You can't just tip up to a food bank and trot off with a box. There will have been a referral. You are jealous of this person, no need.

Mrskeats · 02/05/2020 17:38

Jealous Hmm

ScarfLadysBag · 02/05/2020 17:38

It's just weird, though, as presumably you're at the mercy of what the food bank actually has v what you actually want? If you could afford food yourself, and food you've actually chosen yourself, then most people would want to do that surely? Confused

Mrskeats · 02/05/2020 17:40

I have a good job and my husband is vp of a big company. Jealous is so far from the truth.
I just think it's wrong to take from well meaning people. Currently food banks are having an upsurge in usage of up to 70 per cent so people like this should not be using them.

OP posts:
Mrskeats · 02/05/2020 17:41

It is weird agreed.

I agree with @FlibbertyGiblets, I volunteer at a project project attached to the local Foodbank and you can’t just rock up and get a food parcel, you have to be referred and lots of questions are asked so that you can be signposted to other appropriate support if necessary.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 02/05/2020 17:42

Don't you need a referral?

Mrskeats · 02/05/2020 17:43

I know ederson so something does not add up.

I get it, but perhaps that person has debts? I guess when it comes to food banks one has to be non judgemental.

safariboot · 02/05/2020 17:45

Well, since you're being tight lipped, nobody else can give an informed opinion. So why clutter up the forum?

Mrskeats · 02/05/2020 17:46

I don't think having debts would get you a referral would it?
They don't anyway. No credit cards etc. Know this for a fact.
I think people will give to a foodbank who have less money really. Just seems wrong to me.

Chinesetakeawaay · 02/05/2020 17:46

Don't you need a referral?

You do for food banks run by the Trussell Trust and other similar organisations. My church has a food bank, no referral is required and they wouldn't turn anyone away.

ducksback · 02/05/2020 17:47

Wow OP. Not your business FGS.

TinRoofRusty · 02/05/2020 17:48

Have people actually received this magical £2500? I thought they had to wait till June? Personally don't give a shiny shite if someone goes to a foodbank. It's a humiliating experience I don't begrudge anyone. Happy to donate.

Sally872 · 02/05/2020 17:48

Either they are lying about their financial situation, lying about using a food bank, or going to extreme lengths to fraudulently get food from a food bank.

You are mistaken is the most likely scenario.

formerbabe · 02/05/2020 17:52

Seems very odd to me...I'd assume anyone using a food bank was absolutely skint...ie virtually nothing in bank..maybe overdraft or credit cards maxed out and literally no one to ask for help.

I dont think using a food bank is anything to be ashamed of but I imagine most people would not want to ask for help unless absolutely necessary.

£2500 is their income; nothing to do with the current situation.

OP posts:
bobstersmum · 02/05/2020 17:53

They might be up to eyes in debt for all you know, why the fuck does it matter to you?

Mrskeats · 02/05/2020 17:54

Why so rude buzz no need.
You feel better now?
Reported.

OP posts:
Mrskeats · 02/05/2020 17:55

It matters because it's taking food from someone who needs it. Is this hard to compute?

OP posts:
Witchend · 02/05/2020 17:55

Generally you do need referring.
However I'm at a Covid-19 support one and it's the policy to give to all who ask because there are people who are currently struggling who never would normally ask. Also some people can't get out so they are getting food boxes, but they then donate back to the food bank, so they aren't getting it for free.

bobstersmum · 02/05/2020 17:56

If you post in aibu you need to be able to accept that people won't agree. You sound nosey and judgy, for you to know so much you must be a trusted family member or close friend, I feel sorry for the person involved.
