To want to sell up and buy this house by the sea?

Lockdown boredom has set in and started looking for somewhere to buy with what I could roughly have in equity if I sold my house.

I know Jaywick is a bit rough (I'm the opposite side of Essex currently so know the area a little) but still, can it really be that bad? The idea of being mortgage free is quite appealing, and the house looks like it requires no work at all, plus I love the kitchen.

And I could walk to the beach!

the house

Please tell me I'm BU/ point out all the faults with my plan!

Why don't you look somewhere like Gosport, Portsmouth, Southsea? You can get some nice places for £150k (albeit not 3 bedroomed detatched) and it's only 80 minutes to London on the train.

Daisydoesnt · 01/05/2020 15:17

OP have you noticed in pic 3, the far right hand side you can actually see the end of the peninsular work top. Which contains the washing machine. So you'd have the washing machine right next to you whilst you're sat watching TV.

The rooms are TINY. That layout would be OK on holiday or as a weekend place but that would drive you crackers if you lived there full time.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 01/05/2020 15:19

I'm on the opposite side of the country, and even I've heard of how rough Jaywick is!

Sweetpea84 · 01/05/2020 15:20

We stayed at a haven in Essex and we drove around that area it is dire. There was a tyre place and the people who worked there literally looked like hillbilly’s it was a weird place.

Bouledeneige · 01/05/2020 15:22

Oh I thought the house would be lovely but the area a bit dodge. I'm afraid I thought the house was crampt and in need of a total re-vamp. Looks grim to me.

FairyDogMother11 · 01/05/2020 15:25

I live in Suffolk and we paid £125,000 for a large Victorian terrace with a reasonable sized garden, conservatory, 10 minute walk from the town centre, 15 minute walk to the beach etc, we've done quite a lot of work to it and had it valued at £145,000. With your budget you'd get a reasonably sized property in decent repair round here!

Lalala205 · 01/05/2020 15:25

I'm my past mooches around rightmove I looked at a street view of somewhere in Jaywick. The two men the Google car passed looked 'lots of fun', one was flipping the bird and the other got out his bare arse. Men in their 40s it looked like... Your potential future neighbours OP 😂

mushroom3 · 01/05/2020 15:25

Has it ever flooded? Jaywick is prone to flooding. There is a lack of infastructure shops etc nearby.

jakeyboy1 · 01/05/2020 15:25

Jaywick is the most deprived ward in the Uk. Worse than Tower Hamlets and Ladywood!
The housing was originally built as short term holiday homes and not designed to last this long, it probably isn't mortgage-able. That seems a lot of money for that. You could buy a nice semi in some areas of Devon for that!

Smiling89 · 01/05/2020 15:27

I know Jaywick very well. Do not move there! Especially not that bit, it is essentially a shanty town and prone to flooding. During the last tidal surge everyone had to be evacuated. When environmental changes get worse it will be under water. The Tudor estate is nicer and still in Jaywick but further from the seafront. It has high unemployment - mostly inhabited by people who actively avoid unemployment or people who just aren't employable (not everyone obviously but there is a high percentage comparative to other areas).

Clacton isn't amazing but some areas are fine. You just have to avoid certain pockets.

Hairydilemma · 01/05/2020 15:28

Not in a million years! If you want cheap but nicer, look into Suffolk as PP have suggested. Lowestoft for instance - not all of it’s lovely but some bits are and still v cheap.

WellGoshDarnIt · 01/05/2020 15:32

I'm amazed it's £140k...I was under the impression they couldn't give properties in Jaywick away. Honestly OP, there are lovely parts of the country where you can buy a property for that price. What about somewhere like Derbyshire? Hundreds of lovely houses for sale there under £140k, and 2 hours back to London on the train.

LEELULUMPKIN · 01/05/2020 15:33

If it's the sea that you are after OP, how about this......

Smellbellina · 01/05/2020 15:34

I’d be most concerned about the flooding risk

Hollyhobbi · 01/05/2020 15:34

Wonder if house prices will fall? Where I live, a two bed apartment was asking price €270,000 about a year ago. Now a one bed in the same block of 18 apartments is asking €210,000.

Smiling89 · 01/05/2020 15:36

New Way, Point Clear Bay, Clacton-on-Sea
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-78473947.html

This would be a better place in the vicinity in your price range. Anywhere else you would need a higher budget. A lot of Point Clear is very affluent, the end near the holiday park not so much which I imagine is due to the holiday parks presence (so bare that in mind for holiday seasons). I would pick this over Jaywick any day though.

Qgardens · 01/05/2020 15:38

Even i've heard the reputation that place has - and I don't know Essex at all.
Still it might have it's nice areas?

Angelw · 01/05/2020 15:41

Sorry OP even being mortgage free wouldn’t be an incentive for me.

Qgardens · 01/05/2020 15:45

I like that boat on Brighton waterfront someone posted. It's gorgeous.

wonderwhatnext · 01/05/2020 15:49

OP, you can put up with a lot if crap when you’re younger, but as you get older there us nothing more important than “location, location, location.”
Seriously, of all the possible destinations in the UK, you come up with Jaywick? Confused Nooooo! You need somewhere with decent facilities and shops. Somewhere with a reasonably uplifting vibe where you don’t fear for your life every time you step out.

Do you need to be near the sea specifically?

Do bear in mind that many UK coastal areas are dead as a dodo in winter. Some people like the grey, moody effect though, so if you’re one if these, then by all means go for it.

If you’re going to be by yourself mainly when DS is at uni, then please go somewhere you can meet people and there are things to do on your doorstep. You need somewhere with a good vibe and potential for community. And somewhere safe.

Do you really need an office if you live alone? Personally I’d trade one less bedroom for a better location.

The East Coast is bloody freezing. Places like Devon and Dorset are milder, but not much. Cornwall can be lovely but miles away and also it rains every five minutes.

I wonder if Sussex could be your answeras it’s not far from London? As a single woman, I’d take a flat in Brighton or thereabouts, rather than a mansion in Jaywick any day. It doesn’t have to be Brighton, I’m sure there’s lots of reasonable places along the coast in Sussex or Hampshire and there’s fast trains into London?

I would rather live in a mobile home in Devon with sea views than that house and it would probably be better built. As long as you have pleasant views and a good location, is size that important for a single person?

airedailleurs · 01/05/2020 15:51

@FairyDogMother11 do you mind if I ask where you are in Suffolk please? Thanks.

CorianderLord · 01/05/2020 15:51

Needs a new bathroom and the kitchen is really dark. Damn is it cheap though

PineappleDanish · 01/05/2020 15:52

I know Jaywick is a bit rough

Now that's what you call an understatement.

Deadposhtory · 01/05/2020 15:55

I'm mortgage free and it's brilliant. I want to move to the sea next!! Go for it

Jada1234 · 01/05/2020 16:01

All I want to say just drive through jaywick it exactly as soon on them programs on tv. Deprived area. Check on line the crime rates. You don't want to end up unhappy.
